David B. Kanin, recently retired after 31 years at the CIA. The theme
is the impossibility of America remaking the world in our own image
and, realistically, that we are now in a position of inevitable
relative decline. The good news -- well, there's not much good news --
but maybe the facts of life will help bring us together politically.
