2011 Jaguar XK Review

Posted: 04 Aug 2011 06:54 AM PDT

By Eric Peters, Automotive Columnist

Beauty can be more than skin deep — just take a look at the 2011 Jaguar XK.

Heavily updated in all the right places — and left alone were it was already right — it's now one of the smartest choices in its segment, in addition to being one of the easiest to fall in love with.

WHAT IT IS

The XK is an ultra-luxury GT coupe/convertible. It has four seats but it's really got room for just two plus some overnight bags in the back.

Base price is $83,000 for the XK coupe; an XK convertible starts at $89,000. Supercharged XKR versions of both are available, with prices starting at $96,125 for the XKR coupe and $102,25 for the XKR convertible.

A 75th Anniversary special edition has been added to the lineup, too — with a starting price of $104,625.

Just 175 of these will be made.

WHAT'S NEW FOR 2011

A much more powerful 5.0 liter V-8 (with or without supercharger) replaces the previous 4.2 liter V-8.

The traditional — but quirky — Jaguar dog-leg shift lever has been replaced with a fully electronic rotary knob controller similar to the one used in the XF sedan.

All trims get heated windshields (a feature inspired by Jaguar's corporate partner, Land Rover) and also a new Adaptive cruise control system that automatically adjusts vehicle speed in relation to the ebb and flow of surrounding traffic.

WHAT'S GOOD

Performance is now appropriate to price. The previous XF looked like a six-figure supermodel — but its 0-60 time was on par with Mere Ordinaries such as $26k Mustang GTs.

More sporting than overheavy competitors like the Mercedes-Benz SL.

More elegant than a Porsche 911 — and easier to get into, too.

A relative steal compared to both of them.

WHAT'S NOT SO GOOD

It's almost too pretty to take out into the world. You feel nervous leaving it parked unattended.

It'd be nice if you could get a manual transmission — especially in the supercharged XKR.

UNDER THE HOOD

The XF comes standard with a 5.0 liter V-8 featuring direct injection that produces 385 horsepower — 85 horsepower more than the previous 4.2 liter V-8. Step up to the XKR and you get a supercharged version of the 5 liter V-8 that produces 510 hp, 90 horsepower more than the previous supercharged 4.2 liter V-8.

While the 4.2-powered XK was not a slow car, its 0-60 time of about 6 seconds flat wasn't quite exotic. For a car pushing six figures, acceleration was something of a letdown.

The new 5 liter V-8 fixes this.

The 0-60 time with the standard engine drops to just over 5 seconds. With the optional supercharged engine, the XKR can get there in about 4.5 seconds.

That's supercar quick — and enough to pester 911s with.

The standard transmission with either engine is a six-speed automatic with Sport and Winter modes as well as driver-selectable manual control of gear changes via steering wheel mounted paddle shifters.

All versions of the XK are rear-wheel-drive.

Fuel efficiency — not that it matters — is 16 city, 24 highway for the non-supercharged XK coupe, 15 city, 22 highway for the supercharged XKR convertible.

Those figures are actually pretty respectable given the power/perfomance this car offers. For perspective, there isn't a single '60s-era big block V-8 muscle car that can touch the Jag's 0-60 time (let alone its top speed) and those cars were lucky to make 10 MPGs while idling.

ON THE ROAD

The XF's genius is that it can run with a BMW 6-Series (including the ultra-performance M6) or Porsche 911 yet it's as comfortable to cruise around in as a Benz SL550. This arguably makes it a superior everyday car — one that will satisfy the enthusiast driver's need for speed and handling while maintaining a level of comfort and drawing room elegance that very few similarly powerful cars can match.

The 5 liter V-8 has immense power. Pushing down on the gas pedal results in a sensation that's like the roll-on of a big commercial jet with an ex-military pilot at the controls. You feel a swell of thrust as you ease into the throttle. Suddenly, you're doing 90.

And that's the standard, non-supercharged engine.

It is worth mentioning that the XKR's supercharged 5 liter V-8 produces 10 more horsepower than the BMW M6′s 5 liter V-10 — and it does it for $6,225 less, too ($96,125 vs. $102,350).

I'd personally enjoy a manual transmission but the Jag's six-speed automatic is impossible to fault. In Sport mode it not only becomes more aggressive, it intuits your intentions — for example, holding a lower gear for an anticipated fast pass you haven't actually begun to make yet. It is a "smart" transmission with its own computer brain that judges how it ought to behave based on how you're driving, including factors such as the aggressiveness of throttle inputs and steering angles.

The only thing it doesn't do is chirp the tires on the 1-2 upshift.

Probably, this could be adjusted.

Handling feel is superb in part because the car is not unreasonably heavy — about 3,800 pounds for the coupe. Compare this with the hulking Benz SL550, which weighs more than 4,200 pounds. Even with driver and passenger aboard, the Jag is under two tons — while the SL550 with driver and passenger on board will be tipping the scales at about the same weight as a mid-sized V-8 SUV.

The Jaguar XK coupe is also lighter than the BMW M6 coupe (3,909 lbs.).

All thanks to its mostly aluminium (as the Brits say) body.

Add an auto-adjusting suspension and you've got a car that is as ideal for a lazy drive all the way from LA to San Francisco on Pacific Coast Highway as it is capable of keeping up with a BMW M6 — or even a 911 Porsche — when the pace picks up.

AT THE CURB

The XF is a stunning car — a machine you can spend many happy hours viewing from different angles, each of them immensely pleasing to the eye. Though the styling is modern, it is still clearly a Jaguar — the iconic lineage of drophead coupes and E-types mirrored in the curves.

One design touch that helps give the car its slinky proportions is the ratio of length to width and height. The XK is a full 3 inches wider than the Benz SL550 (and an inch-and-a-half wider than the BMW 6). It also rides on a long 108.3 inch wheelbase, similar to the BMW 6 (109.4 inches) but it rides about two inches lower to the ground.

The end result is a car that's feline in its gracefulness and poise; an aluminum-paneled incarnation of its namesake.

The only thing I'm not a huge fan of is the Jaguar rotary controller for the transmission. It's definitely nothing like the old dog-leg design that everyone complained about — but whether the knob is an improvement is debatable because it makes what ought to be a simple function overly complicated.

Here's the process: You get in, key the engine to life by pushing the start button on the dash. This causes the rotary knob on the center console to gently (and slowly) rise up to meet your hand. This takes a second or three.

Only now, you can rotate the knob to the desired range — Drive, Reverse and so on.

It's neat to watch, no doubt — but if you are someone who likes to jump into your car and just go you may be irritated by the slight delay you have to wait through before the system will let you put the car into gear. It's like those auto-closing tailgates many SUVs have. They take seemingly forever; so much simpler to just yank the gate closed by hand — or throw the transmission into gear.

Plus, when — not if — the system develops a problem, the car will be stuck — and probably very expensive to repair. The latter may not matter to the clientele in this price range, but hassle is hassle no matter you're net worth.

No one likes to be stuck by the side of the road waiting for a tow.

In Jaguar's defense, all the cars in this price range have something similar. BMW, for example, has that infernal iDrive mouse; Mercedes its aneurism-inducing COMAND interface.

It's partly due to the tech-lust of some buyers and partly due to the manufacturer's perceived need to make their six-figure cars different in every conceivable way from $20k Prolemobiles, many of which now come with or offer many formerly high-end-only features, including remote/keyess start, GPS and automatic climate control.

Regardless, the fact remains that pulling on a shift handle to place the transmission in Drive or Reverse works. It is straightforward; it gets the job done. Why fool with it?

Other small things:

The XK's back seats are Not Fit For People — even kids. There is literally zero clearance between the backs of the front seats and the seat bottoms of the back seats — so no place for legs at all. To sit back there, you'd need to assume the fetal position, with your knees tucked up against your chest.

On the other hand, the fact that there is at least some potential cargo space back there makes the XK more everyday useable than two-seaters like the Benz SL550 or Porsche 911.

Another plus: The XK's actually got a bigger trunk than the hefty Benz SL — 12 cubic feet vs. 10 for the Benz.

The BMW 6 is bigger inside and out (including trunk space-wise) than either.

THE REST

It used to be said in defense of Jaguar's historically iffy reliability that a Jag still looked better on a mechanic's lift than most cars do on the road. The good news is that after Jaguar partnered with Ford (since divorced) the quality control at Jaguar factories improved geometrically. Today's Jags are on par, quality and reliability-wise, with comparable models from other high-end manufactures like BMW and Benz — both of which have had their own troubles, including BMW's iDrive controller and the buggy software that runs it.

The Jag's also a relative bargain, especially when stacked up against the Benz SL550 — which starts at $102,600. Thats nearly $20,000 more than the base price of an XK coupe.

Even if you assume the Jag will need service more often, you could use the leftover $20k for a pair of first-class, round trip tickets to Europe.

By the time you get back, your Jag will surely have been tuned-up, waxed and gassed.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Buying a Jaguar used to be mostly an emotion-driven experience that sometimes came with a few headaches later on.

You can still get just as carried away — but now you won't regret it in the morning.

it's time to overhaul the DOJ

we know who hijacked them ... now it's time to replace them by any
means necssary
aim small ... miss small

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- The U.S. Justice Department today filed a
lawsuit
challenging Alabama's new immigration law, which is slated to go into
effect next month.

In its lawsuit, the Justice Department says Alabama's law
unconstitutionally interferes with the federal government's authority
over immigration.

"To put it in terms we relate to here in Alabama, you can only have
one
quarterback in a football game. In immigration, the federal
government
is the quarterback," said Joyce White Vance, the U.S. Attorney for
the
Northern District of Alabama.

Justice Department lawyers write in the lawsuit that the department
is
filing the action "to declare invalid and preliminarily and
permanently
enjoin the enforcement of various provisions" of the state law,
according to the lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Birmingham
this
afternoon. Provisions within the state's immigration law "are
preempted
by federal law and therefore violate the Supremacy Clause of the
United
States Constitution."

Parts of the state law also undermine the federal government's
careful
balance of immigration enforcement priorities and objectives,
according
to a U.S. Justice Department joint statement from federal and local
officials about the lawsuit.

"The brief filed today makes clear that, while the federal government
values state assistance and cooperation with respect to immigration
enforcement, a state cannot set its own immigration policy, much less
pass laws that conflict with federal enforcement of the immigration
laws," according to the statement.

day's action makes clear that setting immigration policy and
enforcing
immigration laws is a national responsibility that cannot be
addressed
through a patchwork of state immigration laws," said Attorney General
Eric Holder. "The department is committed to evaluating each state
immigration law and making decisions based on the facts and the law.
To
the extent we find state laws that interfere with the federal
government's enforcement of immigration law, we are prepared to bring
suit, as we did in Arizona."

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano stated
that
Homeland Security continues to enforce federal immigration laws in
Alabama and around the country "in smart, effective ways that focus
our
resources on criminal aliens and employers who knowingly hire illegal
labor, as well as continue to secure our border."

"Legislation like this diverts critical law enforcement resources
from
the most serious threats to public safety and undermines the vital
trust
between local jurisdictions and the communities they serve,"
Napolitano
said. "We continue to support comprehensive reform of our immigration
system at the federal level because this challenge cannot be solved by
a
patchwork of inconsistent state laws."

Birmingham Chief of Police A.C. Roper, according to the statement,
believes that the Alabama immigration law will hamper local law
enforcement's ability to police the community effectively. Roper
stated
that the law will require the Birmingham Police Department to "expend
scarce resources on immigration matters at the expense of" municipal
priorities.

Alabama and several other states have enacted state immigration laws
in
the wake of Arizona's law. The Justice Department in July 2010 also
had
challenged Arizona's immigration law.

Earlier today the bishops who lead the Episcopal, United Methodist,
and
Roman Catholic churches in Alabama filed a civil lawsuit to try and
block enforcement of Alabama's new immigration law. The Hispanic
Interest Coalition of Alabama and other groups had also filed a civil
lawsuit last month asking for a judge to block enforcement of the law
and rule it unconstitutional.

The Alabama Legislature enacted the new law in June.

Alabama's new immigration law targets unauthorized immigrants, those
who
don't have federal alien registration or other proof of legal
presence
in the United States. If it takes effect, the law would criminalize
their presence in Alabama and make it a crime for them to work here,
among other things.

An estimated 120,000 unauthorized immigrants lived in Alabama in 2009
and 2010, according to the Pew Hispanic Center, a nonpartisan
research
organization in Washington.

Most sections of Alabama's immigration law take effect Sept. 1. The
law,
among other things would make it illegal for a person without proof
they
are legally in the United States to be in Alabama and to work or
apply
for work.

The new law would require a law officer stopping, detaining or
arresting
a person to make a reasonable attempt, when practicable, to determine
the citizenship and immigration status of the person if there is
reason
to suspect the person is an illegal alien. Law officers would have to
contact federal officials to check the person's status.

It will be a crime for a person who knew or recklessly disregarded
that
an immigrant was in the United States illegally to: conceal, harbor
or
shield the immigrant from detection, transport the immigrant or rent
a
dwelling unit to the immigrant. School districts will be required to
report to the state school board the numbers of its students born
outside U.S. jurisdiction or who have a parent who is an illegal
immigrant.

Employers in Alabama beginning April 1 must use the federal E-Verify
program to verify the employment eligibility of a new hire. Employer
found to have knowingly employed an unauthorized immigrant would have
the business license suspended or revoked for where the person
worked,
except those who had used the e-verify information.

LIFE WITH BIG BROTHER

Your face on Facebook 'your own worst enemy'

New technology can steal Social Security Numbers

Using publicly available data, it is now possible to identify strangers and gain their personal information – even their Social Security numbers – by using facial recognition software and social media profiles, according to a new study to be presented tomorrow at the Black Hat Security Conference in Las Vegas.

Professor Alessandro Acquisti from Carnegie Mellon University and his research team studied the implications of the combining, or "mash-up," of three technologies: face recognition, cloud computing (an Internet technology) and social networks.

The team studied the possibility of using publicly available Internet data and commercially available facial recognition software to reveal more information about a person than was intended.

In work that was funded by the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Army Research office, the team noted that Google has acquired Neven Visions, Riya and PittPatt and deployed face recognition into Picasa.

Further, "Apple has acquired Polar Rose, and deployed face recognition into iPhoto. Facebook has licensed Face.com to enable automated tagging. So far, however, these end-user Web 2.0 applications are limited in scope: They are constrained by, and within, the boundaries of the service in which they are deployed. Our focus, however, was on examining whether the convergence of publicly available Web 2.0 data, cheap cloud computing, data mining, and off-the-shelf face recognition is bringing us closer to a world where anyone may run face recognition on anyone else, online and offline – and then infer additional, sensitive data about the target subject, starting merely from one anonymous piece of information about her: the face."

Acquisti noted that last year, more than 2.5 billion photos were uploaded by Facebook users per month. These users also use their real names, addresses, birthdates and other contact information as part of their profiles on social media such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Google-Plus and others, and in many cases the information is visible to the entire world.

Study reveals image, plus software, can reveal pages of personal data

Now using a new commonly used Internet technology called "cloud computing," it is possible to easily run millions of facial comparisons in a matter of seconds.

In the Carnegie Mellon study, 93 student volunteers had their pictures taken using a webcam attached to a laptop. The pictures then were uploaded to the Internet and compared with a database of 261,262 publicly available photos downloaded from Carnegie Mellon students' Facebook profiles. Using facial recognition software from a company called Pittsburgh Pattern Recognition, "PittPatt," Acquisti's team successfully identified more than 30 percent of the students by their pictures alone.

Acquisti said the study "suggests that the identity of about one-third of subjects walking by the campus building may be inferred in a few seconds combining social-network data, cloud computing and an inexpensive webcam." He called it the "democratization of surveillance."

Then, using a technique he developed in a 2009 study and data gathered from the Facebook profiles of the subjects he identified, the research team could correctly predict the first five digits of the person's Social Security number 27 percent of the time after just four attempts.

He utilized the fact that in 1987 the Social Security Administration started assigning Social Security numbers in a way that inadvertently made them easier to predict, based on the person's birth date. (Acquisti also noted in his study that the last four numbers of the SSN are also predicable, but a larger sample size would be needed.)

With Facebook's and Google-Plus's (Google's new social media software) total membership of almost 800 million users, these sites have essentially become an online identity-verification database.

"It's certainly not science fiction anymore," said Peter N. Belhumeur, professor of computer science at Columbia University.

Since these same tools are available to anyone, the results of the study may foreshadow a future in which there is no privacy. With the mass deployment of security cameras, smart phones and other data imaging devices, anyone could be identified almost anywhere.

Not only could individuals be identified by friends and neighbors, but by government agencies as well. Anyone with a smartphone and Internet connection will be able to establish who someone is, where they live, how much they earn, a credit score and whether they've ever gotten a ticket.

All that from a person's face.

"A person's face is the veritable link between her offline and online identities," said Acquisti. "When we share tagged photos of ourselves online, it becomes possible for others to link our face to our names in situations where we would normally expect anonymity."

Acquisti believes that his study is about much more than facial recognition.

"Our study is less about face recognition and more about privacy concerns raised by the convergence of various technologies. There is no obvious answer and solution to the privacy concerns raised by widely available face recognition and identified (or identifiable) facial images," he said.

"Google's Eric Schmidt observed that, in the future, young individuals may be entitled to change their names to disown youthful improprieties. It is much harder, however, to change someone's face. Other than adapting to a world where every stranger in the street could predict quite accurately sensitive information about you (such as your SSN, but also your credit score, or sexual orientation), we need to think about policy solutions that can balance the benefits and risks of peer-based face recognition," he continued.

"Self-regulation, or an opt-in mechanism, is not going to work, since the results we presented are based on publicly available information," he said.

The technology and online investigative services may make government initiatives, such as the "Real ID" program, obsolete. Through the combination of social media, the Internet and smart devices, de facto, unregulated "Real ID" infrastructure already may exist.

Hundreds of Blacks beat Whites at Wisconsin State Fair

Hundreds of Blacks beat Whites at Wisconsin State Fair

If the Nike Air Jordan was on the other foot, the media would be screaming hate crime. This black on white  mob violence has happened over a dozen times the past year but the mainstream liberal media tends to overlook it.

WEST ALLIS - Witnesses tell Newsradio 620 WTMJ and TODAY'S TMJ4 of a mob of young people attacking innocent fair-goers at the end of the opening night of State Fair, with some callers claiming a racially-charged scene.

Milwaukee Police confirmed there were assaults outside the fair.

Witnesses' accounts claim everything from dozens to hundreds of young black people beating white people as they left State Fair Thursday night.

Authorities have not given official estimates of the number of people involved in the attacks.

"It looked like they were just going after white guys, white people," said Norb Roffers of Wind Lake in an interview with Newsradio 620 WTMJ.  He left the State Fair Entrance near the corner of South 84th Street and West Schlinger Avenue in West Allis.

"They were attacking everybody for no reason whatsoever."

"It was 100% racial," claimed Eric, an Iraq war veteran from St. Francis who says young people beat on his car.

"I had a black couple on my right side, and these black kids were running in between all the cars, and they were pounding on my doors and trying to open up doors on my car, and they didn't do one thing to this black couple that was in this car next to us.  They just kept walking right past their car.  They were looking in everybody's windshield as they were running by, seeing who was white and who was black.  Guarantee it."

Eric, a war veteran, said that the scene he saw Thursday outside State Fair compares to what he saw in combat.

"That rated right up there with it.  When I saw the amount of kids coming down the road, all I kept thinking was, 'There's not enough cops to handle this.'  There's no way.  It would have taken the National Guard to control the number of kids that were coming off the road.  They were knocking people off their motorcycles."

Another witness, who asked to remain anonymous, said, "it was like a scene you needed the National Guard to control."

"To me, it looked like a scene out of a movie," claimed the anonymous witness.

"I have not seen anything like this in my life.  It was a huge mob, and it was a fight that maybe lasted one to two minutes."

the liberal media doesn't want to offend their constituancy by

that's why the press doesn't report that 100 white women per day are

Why Is America Committing Suicide?

Why Is America Committing Suicide?
The US of A on the road to ruin
by Justin Raimondo, August 05, 2011

America is committing suicide. That's the only explanation I have for the course followed by US policymakers in the past decade, a period in which the US budget deficit has skyrocketed beyond all reason. While we have run up deficits before, some of them considerable by the standards of the day, in 2001 – the year we launched our endless " war on terrorism" – the deficit began to enter new territory. Whereas before it had fluctuated, going up, down, and effectively maintaining a steady state of neutral, after the 9/11 terrorist attacks this country went into debt bigtime, with the deficit climbing steadily, doubling in 2007, and nearly doubling again the next fiscal year.

In the name of fiscal "austerity," Congress recently authorized yet another raising of the debt ceiling, and everyone sits around waiting for the "draconian" cuts to fall – a "cut," that is, in the rate at which government spending is projected to grow. Only in Washington, D.C., is a "cut" actually an increase – just not as much of an increase as was anticipated. As Ron Paul pointed out, if Congress had simply frozen spending at 2004 levels, we'd have more of a "cut" than we do now.

No one is surprised by this Washington doubletalk: that's the language they speak in the Imperial City, where murdering civilians is " collateral damage" and taxation is " revenue enhancement" instead of good old-fashioned theft. It's silly season on Capitol Hill: so what else is new? Yet I sense a more sinister pattern in this Kabuki theater known as the debt ceiling drama, the implications of which are darker than I care to contemplate but then again, that's my job …

While governments can only finance their completely non-productive (in reality: counter -productive) activities by incurring debt, it's rare in human history to find profligacy comparable to our own. One has to go all the way back to ancient Rome, under the heel of its more depraved emperors, to find a precedent. The numbers are not merely astonishing: they are inconceivable. The figure $14.3 trillion – must forever remain in the world of abstractions, because any attempt by the human brain to concretize it fails. How do our lawmakers imagine we can continue to spend at these levels, living light years beyond our means?

Their recklessness is epitomized by how the military budget came out in all the deficit dickering. As it stands, real defense cuts only kick in if the "super-Congress" fails to come to an agreement on what cuts to make. Then and only then will the misnamed "defense" department come in for something approximating its fair share of cuts. Put another way: only in the most extreme and politically next-to-impossible case will Congress even consider cutting back on its overseas empire. They'll yank your grandmother off her dialysis machine before they'll contemplate getting rid of "foreign aid."

We ordinary folk live in a completely different world than the movers and shakers of the Imperial City: no one outside the Beltway bubble can really understand the mental processes that allow for such a massive evasion of reality, a kind of collective madness that infects the ruling elite in this country, regardless of party. They talk down to the hoi polloi, and use a different language when they converse among themselves, but occasionally the truth comes out. In 2004, Ron Suskind wrote a piece for the New York Times Magazine which included this quote from an unnamed top White House aide:

"The aide said that guys like me were 'in what we call the reality-based community,' which he defined as people who 'believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality.' … 'That's not the way the world really works anymore,' he continued. 'We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you're studying that realityjudiciously, as you willwe'll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that's how things will sort out. We're history's actors…and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.'"

While the context was a discussion of the Iraq war, this mindset – which is dominant in the Washington of Barack Obama just as it was during the Bush era – pervades our ruling elite in all matters. Why shouldn't they run up a $14.3 trillion debt   after all, don't they create their own reality? Armed  with such supernatural powers, we aren't going to let a little thing like impending bankruptcy stand in our way – not when we can wish it out of existence.

Except we can't. World markets trembled this week, and all indications are that the Big One is just now visible over the horizon. Americans are waking from their decade-long dream – or is that nightmare? – to discover that the world as they used to know it is falling apart, and a new world – a poorer, more restrictive, grayer world is dawning. Yet our "leaders" in Washington are oblivious to the crisis, as much as they posture and pose: they are, personally, practically invulnerable to the effects of the economic collapse – at least, so far – and so don't take it seriously. Encased in their self-created bubble, and imbued with the radical subjectivism that has taken hold everywhere but in the sorely beleaguered reality-based community, our rulers pursue policies that are suicidal in their effect, if not their intent.  And I am beginning to wonder if that isn't their intent, at least on some level….

I put this out there as a proposition, a speculation, based solely on evidence of the circumstantial sort. When someone habitually engages in suicidal behavior, repeating the same pattern in spite of recognizing, on some level, that their actions are self-destructive, one has to wonder if they harbor a death wish. Which raises the question: So why is the American ruling class intent on committing suicide?

There is a theory of history, which I don't agree with, that treats civilizations as organic entities which go through a process of maturation, progressing from youth to senility in stages roughly comparable to the life process of a human being. Could the Spenglerians be right? Is American civilization entering a new phase one of terminal decadence? This isn't the first time I've thought of these lines from Robinson Jeffers' poem, " Shine, Perishing Republic":

"While this America settles in the mould of its vulgarity, heavily thickening
          to empire

And protest, only a bubble in the molten mass, pops and sighs out, and the
          mass hardens,

I sadly smiling remember that the flower fades to make fruit, the fruit rots
          to make earth.

Out of the mother; and through the spring exultances, ripeness and decadence;
          and home to the mother.

You making haste haste on decay: not blameworthy; life is good, be it stubbornly
          long or suddenly

A mortal splendor: meteors are not needed less than mountains:
          shine, perishing republic."
