Re: Zurich Financial Services Group considering dropping all ads from Fox at the request of the Tides Foundation

forgive my ignorance.

But, just who the heck is the Tides Foundation and were do they get the clout to bully such a large organization as the Zurich Group?

Zurich Financial Services Group, which dropped its advertising from Glenn Beck's Fox News program last year, is considering removing all ads from Fox News in response to a request by the Tides Foundation, according to a company spokesman.

Asked if Zurich would pull its Fox News ads in response to the Tides boycott, Sean Kevelighan, vice president and head of group media relations for Zurich's North America group, said: "at this time, no decision has been made. They are looking into it."

Other advertisers targeted in the boycott have yet to respond to Media Matters since Monday. Media Matters is also supporting the boycott.

Tides, which has been the subject of dozens of Beck criticisms in recent years, launched the boycott request following an incident this summer in which, according to police, gunman Byron Williams admitted he had been on his way to kill members of Tides and the ACLU in San Francisco on July 18.

Oakland, Ca., police stopped Williams as he traveled to San Francisco, an incident that ended in a shootout in which several highway patrolmen were injured. Williams has since told Media Matters that he was a regular viewer of Beck and that the conspiracy theories aired on Beck's show had helped inform his alleged assassination plot. Beck's show had helped inform his views on Tides.

Zurich last year dropped its advertising from Beck's show, but not Fox News entirely.

"It was a decision made by the company that certain elements of the show did not align with the company's values," Kevelighan said about the 2009 ad removal, declining to offer more specifics. "It was just a conscious decision made in '09."

Zurich recently complained to Fox News after its ads were again shown on Beck's program during repeat telecasts of the show that aired in March and April.

Kevelighan said in an e-mail to Media Matters:

We have been informed that FOX erroneously ran Zurich ads twice during repeat airings of the Glenn Beck program. As such, FOX is working with Zurich's media purchasing firm Mindshare to ensure our directive to not advertise during any airing of the Glenn Beck show is upheld without any future errors.

Kevelighan declined to comment further on Beck or the Tides Foundation boycott request.

Dear MoveOn member,

With 11 days left until the election, polls show that Republicans could be on the verge of taking over Congress.

Jon Stewart is right: We desperately need to restore sanity in this country. But a rally alone isn't gonna do it—we've got to do everything we can between now and Election Day.

So on Saturday, October 30th, MoveOn members are gathering at hundreds of "Restore Sanity" parties where we'll watch Stewart's Rally to Restore Sanity happening live in Washington, D.C., and then call other MoveOn members who live near critical congressional races and sign them up to get out the vote.

People need a place to gather in Washington—can you open up your home to host a Restore Sanity call party on October 30th? Click here to sign up:

Yes, I can host a Restore Sanity Watch and Call Party

Hosting is fun and simple—check out what one new host had to say:

"I had questions about the process, so, I attended a call party. The people there were very friendly, informative and made me feel at home. It was there I made the decision to host. It's so simple. Don't hesitate, let's get busy. Remember, united we stand!"

Anyone can do it—and it makes a huge impact. This is our last chance to turn out volunteers that could help make the difference in crucial races—so please, sign up to host today! Click here:

Yes, I can host a Restore Sanity Watch and Call Party

Thanks for all you do.

Got this one from a pal in Germany.  It shows that German companies contributed more to Democrats than Republicans.

A bit behind the timing for President Obama's claim that the Chamber of Commerce is getting a lot of money from overseas for conservative candidates, but the German Paper Die Welt has an interesting story today about monies German companies have given to US candidates:

http://www.welt.de/wirtschaft/article10454960/Deutsche-Firmen-finanzieren-US-Wahlkampf.html

It has an interesting chart that I've attached to this email (hope it comes through ok).

Here's the Google translation of the article:

http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=de&u=http://www.welt.de/wirtschaft/article10454960/Deutsche-Firmen-finanzieren-US-Wahlkampf.html&ei=EbnBTJujGoOglAeJsqm-Cg&sa=X&oi=translate&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CBUQ7gEwAA&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dhttp://www.welt.de/wirtschaft/article10454960/Deutsche-Firmen-finanzieren-US-Wahlkampf.html%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26sa%3DG%26prmd%3Div

I don't really know the efficacy of the Welt organization but I checked other regional papers and they are reporting that German companies donated more to liberal campaigns than conservative or tea party campaigns.

So, with respect to foreign contributions from Germany, the Democrats get more...

The nanny state is alive and well in Canada

from the Ottawa Sun.

sometimes you just have to Laugh, to keep from crying.

Bear

Double Down devil

Province just itching to ban 'glorious' treat

I grabbed a Double Down from KFC for lunch Thursday. It was glorious. Fried chicken, cheese and bacon. That's it.

I decided it was best to get the most manly sandwich on the market before Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty changed his mind again and went back to dreaming up ways to ban it.

In case you missed it, the Ontario government mused about banning the Double Down. Then, before the howls of laughter at that thought had even subsided, they changed their mind and decided to let adults eat whatever junk food they want to.

But why wouldn't the McGuinty government tell adults what they can and can't eat? They tell school children what they can eat and tell parents what they can send in school lunches.

My nephew was sent home with a package of unopened cookies once and a _nasty note informing his mother that cookies are not acceptable for lunch -- ever. Not even as a treat.

It's so bad in Ontario that during federal Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff's summer tour, I heard senior Liberals complain about McGuinty's nanny state.

Ontario is not alone in going too far in trying to control the lives of its citizens.

On Thursday the Supreme Court agreed to hear a case involving Quebec parents who wanted to pull their children from certain classes.

A few years ago, Quebec replaced its old religious education program with a new "Ethics and Religious Cultures" course. It's mandatory. Your kids will learn it and, even if you choose a private school, the province will shove this down your throat. Just ask the private Loyola High School in Montreal.

In a separate case in Quebec, Premier Jean Charest is trying to use the courts to tell a private Catholic school that they must teach that all religions are equally true. If that's the case, why would parents pay tuition to send their kids to a private Catholic school, or Jewish school or Muslim school?

It baffles the mind.

Across the country, municipal and provincial governments have banned lawn pesticides that have been ruled safe by federal regulators. Golf courses where the politicians play and make their deals are, of course, exempt from the ban and so putting on the 18th green is not impeded.

Down at the local soccer field, it's a different story.

If a parent can get their children out of doors and moving to work off all the junk food they aren't allowed to eat in school, there is a good chance little Johnny or Judy will break an ankle.

Fields for soccer and baseball that once were covered in grass are now so choked with weeds it would take a team of bureaucrats to find the grass.

But at least we're safe from everything -- except politicians.

Having banned junk food and water bottles, trans fats and speech that might offend someone, politicians are forever on the lookout for the next thing they can protect us from.

Well they can have my Double Down when they pry it from my cold dead fingers ... or when KFC drops it from the menu.

Sowell: Is Barney Frank?: Part II

Is Barney Frank?: Part II

By Thomas Sowell

10/22/2010

http://townhall.com/columnists/ThomasSowell/2010/10/22/is_barney_frank_part_ii

Among long-time politicians who are being seriously challenged for the first time this election year, Congressman Barney Frank of Massachusetts best epitomizes the cynical ruthlessness which hides behind their lofty rhetoric.

Having been a key figure in promoting the risky mortgage lending practices imposed by the federal government on lenders, and on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to buy these risky mortgages from the lenders, Barney Frank blamed the resulting collapse of financial markets and the economy on everybody except Barney Frank.

In February 2009, as chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, Congressman Frank summoned the heads of some of the biggest banks in the country before his committee. In the words of the Los Angeles Times, these bankers "endured hours of hectoring" by "indignant lawmakers" on that committee.

These bankers were in no position to talk back to members of this committee, much less point out how committee members -- including Chairman Barney Frank -- had themselves promoted laws and policies responsible for the current economic disaster.

This is a committee with the power to promote legislation detrimental to this heavily regulated industry. That in turn gives the committee the power to force others to sit there and take it, when they are demonized on nationwide TV.

Congressman Barney Frank has never hesitated to use his power ruthlessly. On one occasion, he threatened bankers with summoning them before his committee and forcing them to reveal their home addresses -- which would of course put their spouses and children at the mercy of any kooks that might come along.

Meanwhile, Congressman Frank could piously invoke "social justice" in defense of similarly ruthless community activist groups like ACORN or National People's Action, which had in fact besieged the homes not only of bankers but also of public officials who dared to oppose their agendas. In Barney Frank's words, these groups were simply people who "cared about equity" and who were just "trying very hard to preserve some equity and some social justice."

But the harassment and shakedown activities of such groups were perhaps best captured by the words of a leader of one of these groups, who addressed her followers by saying: "We want it. They've got it. Let's go get it."

These were not just idle words. The dirty little secret that few in the media seem to want to discuss is that community activists, including Jesse Jackson, have over the years extracted literally billions of dollars from financial institutions, as the price of peace and of not challenging these institutions in hearings before federal regulators, as these groups are empowered to do under the Community Reinvestment Act.

Much of this money has been extracted in the form of risky mortgage loans of the sort that have been at the center of the housing boom and bust, and its repercussions in financial markets and in the economy as a whole.

Among others who have been at the heart of the risky lending behind the financial meltdown are Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, whom Congressman Barney Frank has also championed and protected. When federal regulators uncovered irregularities in Fannie Mae's accounting, and in 2004 issued what Barron's magazine called "a blistering 211-page report," Barney Frank lashed out -- not at Fannie Mae, but at the regulators who uncovered Fannie Mae's misdeeds. He said "a leadership change" in the regulatory agency was "overdue."

Politicians who say we need more regulation almost never mean regulation in the sense of impartially enforcing explicit rules, such as the accounting rules that Fannie Mae was violating to cover up its own risks. They mean regulation with arbitrary powers, such as those under the Community Reinvestment Act, which enable regulators to carry out the agendas that politicians give them.

When Congressman Jim Leach tried to get stronger regulation of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac back in 1992, and when President George W. Bush did so in 2004, Barney Frank opposed them.

A reining in of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac would be a reining in of Barney Frank's power. But he can't stop the voters from reining in his power, unless he can once more get by this election year with pious rhetoric to conceal his cynical actions.

Our Masters, Not Muslims, Are the Enemy
Written by Becky Akers

You, too, may have received this email or one of its variants: the subject heading reads: "This is NYC on Madison Ave," while the body contains pictures showing scores of Muslim men kneeling to pray in the streets so many, in fact, that they fill the pavement from curb to curb. The legend below the pictures complains, "A Christian Nation cannot put up a Christmas scene of the baby Jesus in a public place, but the Muslims can stop normal traffic every Friday afternoon by worshiping in the streets....  Scary! Isn't it? … This is an accurate picture of every Friday afternoon in several locations throughout NYC…."

A devout Christian and friend in the Midwest forwarded this to me, asking if I as a New Yorker had to contend with such outrages. I do -- but not because of praying Muslims. You can't block roads here unless you're one of our rulers. Obama or some other pooh-bah comes to town, and the streets his motorcade will cruise are closed to vehicles while cops force pedestrians to stand waiting until His Majesty has passed: God forbid the leech should sit fuming in Manhattan's notorious gridlock alongside mere taxpayers. One of these "freezes" caught me for 10 minutes a year or two ago; a friend recently endured 30 minutes on the corner opposite her destination. Neither our time nor our lives matter to the self-important grandees in office.

A week or so after I'd received the first email, another Midwestern Christian forwarded a second. This time it was a video of the praying Muslims, and though the pictures in the prior email were clearly outtakes, the filmmakers claimed to have shot their footage in Paris. Under the subject heading "It's Coming," the text warned that "It is widespread in France and has now started in New York."

Neither of my friends has ever travelled internationally, let alone to Islamic countries. I'm also fairly certain they don't know any Muslims.

But I do -- or at least I think I do: they are so nonchalant about converting me, not to mention praying in public, that I'm uncertain what their religion is, if indeed they have any at all. One called Mohammed works as a security guard in a building I visit; we only exchange pleasantries, so I assume his faith from his name.

Another is the sexton at church. He's about 19 but so responsible and mature that he alone cleans our 12,000 square-foot building. He's also charming and unfailingly courteous; it isn't cool for guys his age to chat with a woman older than they, but he does. He tells me about his family and his dreams for the future (each remarkably similar to yours or mine); he even introduced me to his sister when I bumped into them on the street rather than ignoring me as American teens would have. His English is accented, but it's so good I initially thought he'd spent most of his life in New York. Then I learned he immigrated only a year ago.

Like Mohammed, our sexton is so diffident about converting me that the topic of religion never arises. And that's despite my casting about for a way to introduce it because I long to tell him of salvation in Jesus Christ.

I do occasionally see Muslims praying in the streets. New York City licenses vendors to sell fruit and vegetables, souvenirs, hot dogs and pretzels, even clothing, from stands on the sidewalks. The fruit-guys seem to be mostly Indian or Pakistani immigrants; sometimes, they unroll a prayer rug beside the kiwis and cucumbers and pray. I always consider it a resounding rebuke to us Christians: when was the last time any of us called on our Lord in public?

Ditto for the infamous "fatwas" Islamic leaders issue. Killing cartoonists and movie directors is obviously sinful, but adherents who take their faith this seriously are a living challenge to tepid Christians. Had we been as faithful to the Bible as Moslems are to the Koran, America would not now rot and reign as a socialist Sodom.

So I puzzle over the fear and hostility many Americans who've never met a Muslim nonetheless bear them.

But we all know who's poisoning their minds, don't we? Despite politicians' coy protests that they aren't battling Muslims but "radical Islam" or, even better, "Islamists," the Warriors on Terror need more than just Al Qaeda's paltry numbers to fight. The billions and billions of taxes they squander, the liberties they've stolen from us, all require more than just a few hundred terrorists overseas. There must be an active, breathing menace right here in the ol' Homeland lest we balk at relinquishing the last bit of our money and freedom.

And so politicians and their lackeys in the servile, shameless press imply that American Muslims yearn to impose Sharia law while forcibly converting us all.

And again, I'm puzzled. Why does the threat of Islamic tyranny rile so many Americans? These are folks who shrug each time the Feds decree they'll eavesdrop on more of our communications, who queue up at airport checkpoints despite the Transportation Security Administration's strip-search X-ray machines, who condemn Social Security not for its communism but because its "benefits" aren't munificent enough, who cheered as the government incinerated whole families at Waco and shot a mother holding her baby, a boy, and his dog at Ruby Ridge, who applaud the Warriors on Drug Users as they ruin life after life over a few joints or a gram of cocaine. Really, can Sharia law be any more dictatorial, merciless, or absurd?

I might also understand the abhorrence for Muslims were it directed against those who persecute our Christian brothers and sisters. But it isn't: these emails never mention the Church militant; the authors seem neither to know nor to care that Christians under Islamic governments suffer horrendously. They are instead solely concerned for the neoconservative agenda even if they have can't get the story straight as to whether it's Paris or New York that Moslem prayers endanger.

One of the State's favorite ploys is creating threats from which it "saves" us; another is pitting us against our fellows. Rather than falling for either, let's recognize our masters, not Muslims, as the enemy.

**JP** How a nerve poison became "food"

Lessons to be learned

If you can't watch the whole video, here are the major points of the video:

1. Aspartame, which is sold under a wide variety of names as a zero cal sweetener, is a neurotoxin.

2. It's in literally thousands of package food products including but not limited to diet soft drinks, candy, and chewing gum.

3. The science is, and has always been, clear: this is not a substance safe for human consumption

4. Nonetheless the corporate-controlled governments of Europe and the United States permit it to be used by food manufacturers

5. If you want to protect your own health and in particular the health of children who have growing nervous systems, you won't purchase these products, consume them, or have them in your house.

Spread the word because the news media is going to do it for us and the government cannot be counted on to do the right thing.

UK: City Council Tells Cafe Owner to Remove Exhaust Fan Because Smell of Frying Bacon Offends Muzzies

Hey, she can move right next door to me here in Missouri because I love the smell of bacon in the morning.  And, as an added bonus, it appears to keep Muzzies away:

Cafe owner ordered to remove extractor fan because neighbour claimed 'smell of frying bacon offends Muslims'

By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 1:01 PM on 21st October 2010

A hard-working cafe owner has been ordered to tear down an extractor fan - because the smell of her frying bacon 'offends' Muslims.

Planning bosses acted against Beverley Akciecek, 49, after being told her next-door neighbour's Muslim friends had felt 'physically sick' due to the 'foul odour'.

Councillors at Stockport Council in Greater Manchester say the smell from the fan is 'unacceptable on the grounds of residential amenity'.

The fan has been in Beverley's Snack Shack takeaway in the Shaw Heath area of the town for the past three years.

Mrs Akciecek and her husband Cetin, 50, - himself a Turkish Muslim - work more than 50 hours a week buying, preparing and cooking hot and cold sandwiches and hot-pots for their customers.

Today mother-of-seven Mrs Akciecek said she plans to appeal against the decision.

She said: 'I just think it's crazy. Cetin's friends actually visit the shop, they're regular visitors, they're Muslim people, they come in a couple of times a week.

'I have Muslim people come in for cheese toasties. Cetin cooks the food himself, he cooks the bacon.

'When we go to a cafe my husband wouldn't be offended by the smell of bacon. His friends are not offended by it, we have three visitors who come here for a sandwich, friends of my husband, and the smell doesn't offend them at all.

'My brother-in-law doesn't flinch if he comes and we've just taken out three trays of bacon.

'I'm going to find a local councillor. I'm waiting for the letter so I can appeal.'

The couple took over the take-away in 2007 from the previous owner and replaced the existing extractor fan, which had been there for six years, with a new modern one.

They claim they received no complaints about the cafe which is open from 7.30am-2.30pm six days a week, until around 18 months ago when they received a letter from environmental services to say their neighbour Graham Webb-Lee had complained about the smell.

Mrs Akciecek said: 'We've never had a problem about the smell because everything is pre-cooked. We cook it in the oven so there's no foul smell.

'It's pre-cooked so the smell isn't as strong when we're frying it off. It's like living next to someone who's cooking a Sunday breakfast but it's not constant it's just in the morning.

'It's been a sandwich shop for about eight years, cooking exactly the same stuff. The lady before me did double because they were actually building new houses across the road so she was really busy. She was here from 6am-4pm because they were so busy.

'They were there before me but they were also there when the lady who owns the business was here and she was doing double what we are. She had five staff, you can imagine how bust that shop was and they never complained at all.'

They say that the council's environmental services had been out to inspect their property after their neighbour complained about a foul odour last year, but they ruled that the smell was not causing a problem.

Mrs Akciecek said: 'Environmental services said everything is ok. They kept coming back and guaging it and said there was no problem and because they didn't take any action (the neighbours) complained again.'

The couple had never applied for planning permission as they had simply replaced an existing extractor fan with one of the same size and in the same position, but, following further complaints from their neighbour, they were informed by the council they would have to apply retrospectively as an objection had been raised.

They applied for planning permission in May this year, but the application was refused at a meeting of Stockport Area Committee on October 14.

Mr Webb-Lee objected to the aplication - complaining that his Muslim friends refused to visit him becase they 'can't stand the smell of bacon'.

Mrs Akciecek, who also attended the meeting, said: 'He said he had a daughter with an eating disorder, the Muslim friends, and the bad smell all the time is making his clothes smell.

'The councillors agreed with him without even asking me what I thought. It was as if they didn't even realise I was there.

'This cafe is our only source of income. There are only two of us working, we haven't got any staff anymore. We work seven hours in the shop and my husband goes to the cash and carry and has all the prep work to do. We're working long hours. He does about 50 hours a week easy and I'm working about the same and we work Saturdays.

'The shop will be a lot harder work. It will be a good hour a day washing the walls down, I will not work anywhere with the grease falling down the walls. We can't move it anywhere.

'I'm not going to accept it and we're going to fight it.'

Mr Webb-Lee said: 'The vent is 12 inches from my front door. Every morning the smell of bacon comes through and makes me physically sick.

'I have a lot of Muslim friends. They refuse to visit me anymore because they can't stand the smell of bacon.'

A spokesman for Stockport Council said: 'The retrospective application was rejected on the grounds of residential amenity, as the committee felt the odours given off from the vent were unacceptable for neighbouring residents.

'We will ensure that the cafe complies with this decision and removes the extractor fan.'
