First Speeding Arrest in the U.S.

Today I Found Out

The First Speeding Infraction in the U.S. was Committed by a New York City Taxi Driver in an Electric Car on May 20, 1899

Posted: 20 May 2011 07:48 AM PDT

Today I found out the first speeding infraction in the U.S. was committed by a New York City taxi driver in an electric car on May 20, 1899.  The driver was Jacob German who drove for the Electric Vehicle Company, which leased its electric taxicabs to be used around New York.

German was driving his taxi at a blistering 12 miles per hour down Lexington Street in Manhattan.  At that time, the speed limit was 8 miles per hour on straight-a-ways and 4 miles per hour when turning.  A police officer on a bicycle observed the 26 year old Mr. German speeding and promptly arrested him and imprisoned him in the East 22nd Street station house.

There is some contention on whether he actually received a paper ticket or not, which would have also made him the first person in the U.S. to receive an actual physical ticket, as opposed to just being the first to be cited for committing a speeding infraction.

The general consensus seems to be that he did not receive an actual ticket and, rather, the first known paper speeding ticket issued to a driver in the United States was to one Harry Myers in Dayton Ohio in 1904. Mr. Myers was also traveling 12 miles per hour when the police observed him speeding.  In his case though, he wasn't arrested, but was just issued a ticket.

Outside of the United States, the first known speeding infraction is thought to have been committed in Great Britain on January 28, 1896, around three years before Jacob German was arrested for speeding.  This infraction was committed by Walter Arnold of East Peckham, Kent.  Mr. Arnold was traveling in a 2 mph zone (yes, 2 mph) and was going a breakneck 8 mph.  The fine he received was for 1 shilling.

Bonus Factoids:

  • According to the U.S. Census Bureau, an estimated 100,000 people per day are cited for speeding in the United States with an average cost of $150 per ticket, generating around $15 million per day or around $5.5 billion per year in revenue.
  • The fastest speed ever recorded on a speeding ticket was for a car doing 242 mph in a 75 mph zone in May of 2003 in Texas.  The car was a Swedish Koenigsegg CC85. One wonders how the police officer caught up.
  • The most expensive speeding ticket to date was given to Jussi Salonoja in 2003 in Finland.  Salonoja had to pay 170,000 Euros (around $250,000) for doing 80 km/h in a 40 km/hr zone (about 50 mph in a 25 mph).  Ouch.  The fines in Finland are partially based on the income of the person being ticketed and Mr.  Salonoja is a reasonably wealthy business man and investor.
  • Salonoja received his first fortune at the tender age of 11 years old, receiving a large inheritance from his great uncle who owned a very large meat processing company.
  • Cabriolet

The name "taxicab" is derived from "taximeter" and "cabriolet".  The former was invented in 1891 and obviously is used to record distances and calculate the fare.  The latter refers to a horse drawn carriage where the driver stands in the back of the carriage.

  • The name "taximeter" itself is derived from the Mid-Latin "taxa", meaning "tax, charge".
  • The first documented use of the word "taxicab" was in March of 1907 in London.
  • Another phrase that derived from taximeter was a "taxi dancer", which was a woman who sold her services at dance halls.
  • In 1899, 90% of all taxi cabs in New York were electric vehicles.

US government seizes pension funds, invades Pakistan

US government seizes pension funds, invades Pakistan
by Simon Black

Santiago, Chile

There are certain times in life when a man is faced with overwhelming adversity… times when he has no reason to adhere to society's norms anymore.  It is in these instances that the true quality of his character comes shining through.

One of these situations is when he's broke. Dead, flat broke. Some people, even when staring deep into their own financial abyss, still hold to their moral principles, honor their obligations, and keep their word.

For others, the boundaries of morality are quickly blurred into shades of gray, and things like fraud, thievery, and deception become perfectly legitimate tactics in their minds.

Speaking of broke, faced with what is tantamount to the official insolvency of the United States of America, policymakers have opted to seize funds from the retirement accounts of public sector workers in order to keep the government running.

Wow. America's leaders are willing to engage in cannibalistic thievery in order to continue funding government operations. I wonder what sorts of operations are so important that they are willing to steal from their own people in order to finance? Any ideas?

Apparently, starting a shooting war in Pakistan was at the top of their list.

In the most insulting, disingenuous display of insensitivity and lack of regard following such a momentous financial decision, the US Defense Department decided to send helicopters into western Pakistan in a search for more ghosts. Pakistani military fired on the choppers, and the choppers fired back.

Seems like a good use of confiscated funds, no?

Never fear, though, the cracker jack squad of politicians in the 112th Congress is clearly hard at work, spending all of their time and attention at resolving the debt crisis and budget troubles.

Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee of Texas, for example, proved to America that she's focused like a laser beam when she introduced bill HJ Res. 64 on Friday afternoon. What exactly is HJ Res 64? It's a resolution to express support for designating September 2011 as Gospel Music Heritage Month.

The similarities to Nero playing his fiddle are all too obvious.

Adding injury to insult as it were, Ms. Jackson-Lee followed up HJ Res 64 with the introduction of HR 1900, yet another bill to give TSA sweeping powers over "surface transportation" such as train stations and bus terminals. Now you can be molested in planes, trains, and automobiles. Coming soon: shopping malls!

Not to be outdone by Ms. Jackson-Lee, Senator Barbara Boxer just introduced Senate res 177 to designate May 15th through May 21st 2011 as "National Public Works Week." Wait a sec… that's this week! Well what are we waiting for, comrades!?! Grab a shovel, there's dams to build!

To cap things off, President Obama is getting ready for his highly publicized trip to Ireland next week where he will visit the ancestral home of his great great great grandfather, a small town called Moneygall.

About 298 people live in Moneygall. The town has swelled for the last two months as US Secret Service agents and the President's administrative entourage have descended upon the town to prepare for his visit. Important issues must be tended to… such as, "what kind of beer will the President drink?"

I couldn't even begin to estimate what the cost of this trip will be to US taxpayers… but somehow I doubt it's worth a single penny of seized funds.

Like I said, there are certain times in life where a person's true nature comes shining through. The government is telling us here that, even when faced with insolvency, it will happily confiscate any source of capital it can, and then continue squandering it all on useless folly.

It really leaves me wondering when people are going to wake up and say to themselves, "Enough is enough!"

TSA Backscatter Radiation Safety Tests Were Rigged

TSA Backscatter Radiation Safety Tests Were Rigged
by Mike Adams
Natural News

It can now be revealed by NaturalNews that the TSA faked its safety data on its X-ray airport scanners in order to deceive the public about the safety of such devices.

As evidenced by recent events in Washington, we now live in an age where the federal government simply fakes whatever documents, news or evidence it wants people to believe, then releases that information as if it were fact. This is the modus operandi of the Department of Homeland Security, which must fabricate false terror alerts to keep itself in business – and now the TSA division has taken the fabrication of false evidence to a whole new level with its naked body scanners (see below).

Even physics professors question the TSA's obvious cover-up

The evidence of the TSA's fakery is now obvious thanks to the revelations of a letter signed by five professors from the University of California, San Francisco and Arizona State University.

The letter reveals:
  • To this day, there has been no credible scientific testing of the TSA's naked body scanners. The claimed "safety" of the technology by the TSA is based on rigged tests.
  • The testing that did take place was done on a custom combination of spare parts rigged by the manufacturer of the machines (Rapidscan) and didn't even use the actual machines installed in airports. In other words, the testing was rigged.
  • The names of the researchers who conducted the radiation tests at Rapidscan have been kept secret! This means the researchers are not available for scientific questioning of any kind, and there has been no opportunity to even ask whether they are qualified to conduct such tests. (Are they even scientists?)

TSA operates in complete secrecy

None of the Rapidscan tests have been available to be subjected to peer review. They are quite literally secret tests using secret techniques engineered by secret researchers. We the People apparently have no right to see the data, nor the methodology, nor even the names of the researchers who supposedly carried out these safety tests.

The final testing report produced from this fabricated testing scenario has been so heavily redacted that "there is no way to repeat any of these measurements," say the professors. In other words, the testing violates the very first tenant of scientific experimentation which is that all experiments must be repeatable in order to be verified as accurate.
As the professors state in their letter:

The document is heavily redacted with red stamps over the words and figures. In every case the electric current used which correlates one to one with X-ray dose has been specifically redacted. Thus there is no way to repeat any of these measurements. While the report purports to present the results of objective testing, in fact the JHU APL personnel, who are unnamed anywhere in the document either as experimenters or as authors, were not provided with a machine by Rapiscan. Instead they were invited to the manufacturing site to observe a mock-up of components (spare parts) that were said to be similar to those that are parts of the Rapiscan system. The tests were performed by the manufacturer using the manufacturer's questionable test procedures.

You got that? Where is the outrage from the "scientific" community on all this? This quack science TSA testing is so atrociously and inexcusably bad that if this fabricated evidence were presented at any sort of scientific meeting, they would be laughed off the stage and publicly vilified in the media. And yet, somehow, when the TSA engaged in this sort of quack science, virtually the entire scientific community says nothing. Only a small group of especially courageous scientists has stood up to this obvious quackery, and even these professors are of course being blasted in the press and called un-American for merely questioning the obviously flimsy evidence being laughably fronted by the TSA.

I mean, seriously: Can you imagine the total outcry if an herbal product company claimed that its products cured cancer, and it did all the testing itself, and all the names of the researchers were kept secret, and the methodology was a secret, and the whole document was 50% redacted to protect "proprietary information ?" They would actually be arrested by the federal government for running a criminal scam! So why can the TSA get away with the exact same scandalous junk science distortions and virtually no one in the mainstream media asks a single question?

The complete fabrication of safety in the name of false science

It's amazing what America has come to these days, folks. The federal government isn't merely counterfeiting money every day (or stealing from your retirement accounts to keep itself afloat, which just started happening yesterday), but the feds are also fabricating scientific evidence to keep pushing their utterly fabricated "war on terror." The feds in Washington aren't really fighting a war on terror... they ARE the terror! When the feds reach down your pants and feel your junk; when they force you to be fried with high-powered X-rays at the airport; and when they threaten anyone who stands up to their Nazi-like marching orders, they have become the very terrorist organization they claim to be fighting.
  • The dose rates of X-rays being emitted by the Rapidscan machines are actually quite high – comparable to that of CT scans, say the professors. Yes, the dose duration is significantly lower than a CT scan, but the dose intensity is much higher than what you might think. And as anyone who knows a bit about physics and biology will tell you, the real danger from radiation is a high-intensity, short-duration exposure. That's exactly what the TSA's backscatter machines produce.
  • The radiation detection device used by Rapidscan to measure the output of the machines – an ion chamber – is incapable of accurately measuring the high-intensity burst of radiation produced by the TSA's naked body scanners, say the professors.
  • At the same time, the radiation field measurement device used by the TSA – a Fluke 451 instrument – is incapable of measuring the high dose rates emitted by backscatter machines. The measurement devices, in effect, "max out" and cannot measure the full intensity of the exposure. Thus, the TSA's claims of "low radiation" are actually fraudulent. By the way, the device mentioned by the TSA really is an F 451. Does that ring a bell in terms of fiction novels?
  • The amount of electrical current applied to the X-ray tubes has been redacted by the TSA (working with John Hopkins). This makes it impossible for third-party scientists to accurately calculate the actual radiation exposure, and it hints at yet more evidence of a total TSA cover-up. As explained by the professors:

...the X-ray dose is proportional to the current through the X-ray tube. Not having access to the current used in the JHU test, or in the field application of the scanner means that the measurements at JHU are irrelevant to the dose at the airport. There is also no data on the pixel size and overscanning ratio, which also bear directly on the dose delivered to subjects. The statement in the HHS letter that the fluence is not a relevant quantity ignores fundamental physics.

There shall be no independent testing whatsoever

The TSA adamantly refuses to allow independent testing of the radiation levels being emitted by the machines. The agency is using the cover story that "terrorists might be able to circumvent the technology" if anyone is allowed to actually test the machine.

Hilarious! This is the very definition of quack science. You have to trust our in-house fabricated experiments, and we won't tell you how we even arrived at our test results, and we won't release the names of the scientists who even ran the tests, but we can't tell you more because of the terrorists.

Notably, this is after Osama Bin Laden has already been killed, and he was the whole reason the TSA started up in the first place. The terror mastermind is dead, in other words, and still the TSA can't trust university physics professors to conduct credible science on its naked body scanners.

Actual radiation emitted by the machines is far higher than what the TSA claims

John Sedat, a professor emeritus in biochemistry and biophysics at UCSF and the primary author of the letter says, "..the best guess of the dose is much, much higher than certainly what the public thinks." This indicates the public has been deeply misled by the actual amount of radiation emitted by the machines.
  • Peter Rez, the physics professor from Arizona State, says that the high-quality images described by the TSA could not be produced with the low levels of radiation being claimed by the TSA. The images, in other words, don't match up with the TSA's cover story. Rez estimates the actual radiation exposure is 45 times higher than what we've previously been told.
  • The TSA machines are capable of firing even higher levels of radiation into a "region of interest" (such as your anus or scrotum, in which the TSA seems to be taking great interest these days), thereby exposing that region to even higher levels of radiation than the rest of your body.

Mechanical failure and software bugs

The backscatter scanning devices uses a high-powered X-ray beam that is quickly moved back and forth across your body by reflecting the beam off a moving wheel. If that wheel fails for any reason and stops moving, the traveler could be pierced with a deadly X-ray beam that focuses extremely high levels of radiation on a small group of cells, mutating their DNA.

This means the backscatter devices are mechanical systems, and all mechanical systems eventually fail (just like airplanes). The TSA has done absolutely nothing to address the reliability of these mechanical wheels nor to allow independent testing of the reliability of these wheels.

The TSA refuses to allow independent scientists to review its software code that controls the radiation beam. Thus, the software and its capabilities also remain a complete secret. What if there's a software bug that causes 10,000 times the usual radiation exposure for some unlucky traveler? Suppose the pervert TSA agent zooms in on some 9-year-old child's junk to capture a picture for his own private collection... does that result in yet more radiation? (Fact: One TSA agent has already been arrested for distributing child pornography.)

See more at www.TSAgoons.com (warning: graphic language and imagery on that site.)

What science? We don't need no stinkin' science!

As we're all now learning, the TSA completely bypassed the normal procedure for independent testing of equipment to be used on the public. As explained by the professors:

The independent testing of the safety of these specific scanners has not been rigorous nor has it been held to the standards usually associated with new devices before approval for utilization in the public sector. Usually the exact technology, as installed, is sent to a university, national laboratory or other outside facility that has the expertise to test, for an extended period of time to enable an in-depth study – usually by several independent groups.

The U.S. government, however, no longer feels it needs to engage in any "scientific" testing whatsoever. Why bother? The government can simply fabricate whatever results it wants and then release those to the mainstream media which will dutifully reprint the government's lies as if they were facts. The truth is no longer relevant to the government's tyrannical agenda. As long as no one questions the lies, it hardly matters how unreasonable or bizarre those lies become. Government can always play the terrorism card and force people to shut up and stop asking questions, you see. "How dare you question our integrity. We're the government! We're protecting YOU from terrorism!"

Sure they are. By feeling up my anus? Seriously? If it wasn't actually true, it would be hilarious.

What is the TSA hiding?

NaturalNews asks the obvious question: Why won't the TSA subject its backscatter scanning machines to independent testing? Why won't it allow five different university physics departments to conduct five independent tests – using documented equipment and methodologies – and thereby assure the public, with credibility, that its machines are perfectly safe?

I can tell you why: Because the TSA is lying. The agency has fabricated its test results. It has conspired to deceive and mislead the American public over the safety of these machines, and it has done so through an agenda of government secrecy and scientific fraud. The TSA, lacking any credibility whatsoever, has resorted to routine lying about its machines, its procedures and its intentions. When 6-month-old babies have their rear-ends searched by TSA agents wearing evil grins, you know it's all gone too far.

The TSA refuses to allow independent testing of its machines because it knows what NaturalNews readers already know: That if the machines were honestly and accurately tested, they would show far higher levels of radiation exposure than what we've been told. It would show that the TSA's body scanners significantly increase the risk of cancer to a population that is already over-irradiated with medical imaging tests such as CT scans and chest X-rays.

The TSA, like virtually every other department of the federal government, is now actively engaged in the routine falsification of the scientific data concerning a device that is exposing millions of Americans to an increased risk of cancer. And as long as the federal government claims to have "supreme power" while refusing to answer to the People, we're only going to get more of this tyranny in the months ahead.

The TSA has become the terrorist organization

This is not merely unacceptable; this is a CRIME against the American people. These TSA body scanners are, effectively, Weapons of Mass Destruction that are unleashing ionizing radiation upon an unsuspecting public.

And they are doing it right in your face; telling you it's all perfectly safe while, behind the scenes, they had to engineer a specially-rigged unit just to run their rigged tests using measurement devices that can't even record the high levels of radiation actually being emitted.

The public backlash against these devices is so strong and so loud that news crews have to interview dozens of people on camera just to find one person to actually say something positive about the TSA's pat-down and ionizing scanners. That's the report from Alex Jones, who has also been covering TSA tyranny in great detail. The popularity of his www.Infowars.com website is exploding in the wake of the government's increasingly bold lies and disinfo campaigns that frankly are backfiring on them. A lot of people are easily fooled, but just as many aren't. Probably 95% of all travelers are absolutely opposed to everything the TSA forces them to go through at the airport.

That's why Texas is about to pass a law that would criminalize TSA agents who reach down your pants and molest you or your children. But the TSA has put out a preemptive statement on its blog that claims none of this matters. "States cannot regulate the federal government," the TSA claims. And it actually quotes the U.S. Constitution as the source of its power! (What about the Fourth Amendment of the Constitution? How convenient that they forgot all about that part, eh?)

The passage of this law could lead to a fascinating showdown in Texas. What we need is a group of Texas Rangers to march into the airport in Dallas and arrest the TSA agents, handcuff them, and march them off to jail. Then let's see the feds try to invade Texas to free their criminal TSA agents. That should be amusing. I've spent some time in Texas, talking with the locals, and I can guarantee you that a bunch of tyrant feds trying to invade Texas are going to be absolutely shocked at the intensity of the public resistance they will meet.

The growing TSA resistance movement

By the way, with the TSA's molestation of children and outright lying about the safety of its machines, the federal government is vastly overestimating the stupidity of the general public. People are taking notes of the encroaching tyranny, and while they may pretend to voluntarily walk through the TSA's security checkpoints right now, there will come a day when the American people simply refuse to be herded like cattle anymore. I predict a widespread backlash against the TSA, reflected through state legislative efforts and public protests that will demand an end to the TSA which has now come to mean "Touch Some Ass!"

The hilarious ending to all this, by the way, is that the backscatter machines are also dosing all the TSA workers with regular bursts of ionizing radiation, meaning that the very people working for the tyrannical TSA are, themselves, victims of its deception.

Somehow, that seems incredibly fitting.

The French Bombshell – Stranger Than Fiction

The French Bombshell – Stranger Than Fiction
by Eric Margolis

PARIS – This week, the big buzz for "le tout Paris" (all Paris) – at least until Sunday's "le grand bombshell" – was that President Nicholas Sarkozy and wife Carla Bruni were boycotting the Cannes Film Festival which just opened with the film, Le Conquest (The Conquest).

No wonder. This acid film is all about how a short, pushy, outsider in elevator heels ruthlessly clawing his way to the top of France's political establishment. It's fiction, but you have to be from Uranus not to know this celluloid hatchet job is all about Sarko and his exquisite wife Carla – who, at 43, is rumored to be pregnant, just in time for next year's presidential elections.

Carla Bruni's no-show is even more dramatic since she has a role in Woody Allen's new film, Midnight in Paris, which opens with great fanfare at Cannes. In France, politics and film are inseparable.

The British press, which passionately loathes France, is having a field day running nasty stories about the film and circulating ugly rumors about Carla, who has never been renowned for fidelity or constancy.

However, while this springtime folderol went on, a political bombshell of staggering power exploded in New York City.

An April poll showed Socialist bigwig Dominique Strauss-Kahn running ahead of Sarkozy at 30%, followed by far-right National Front leader Marine LePen at 21%, and, sacré bleu! Sarko trailing at 19% in a first round of the two-part vote. Strauss-Kahn would then wallop Sarkozy in the second round vote.

Strauss-Kahn was expected to step down shortly as head of the International Monetary Fund and announce his run for president. He is expected to easily beat out the other truly boring Socialist contenders for the nomination: Francois Hollande, Martine Aubry, and Segolene Royal.

However, if Strauss had decided to stay in his cushy IMF job, Sarkozy would likely have whipped these weak Socialist candidates who are furiously squabbling among themselves and are bereft of public respect.

France's hardcore left was not happy with Strauss-Kahn, known to all as DSK. A millionaire with a four million euro Paris penthouse and 140,000 euro Porche, DSK is lambasted by leftists as a champagne Socialist and establishment fat cat – which he certainly is.

France's sullen anti-business, anti-globalization left had to decide whether it wanted ideological purity or a candidate who could beat Sarkozy – who, of course was praying every night that DSK won't run.

Sarko's prayers, or Carla's Italian witchcraft, were amazingly answered this past Sunday in New York City.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn was on an Air France flight at Kennedy Airport, preparing to fly to Europe to meet Germany's Prime Minister Angela Merkel. Minutes before takeoff, he was pulled off the flight by New York City police, hauled off to jail and later charged with the attempted rape and confinement of a 30-something maid at the Sofitel Hotel near Times Square.

DSK's lawyers deny the charges, which at this moment sound rather flimsy But even if DSK is acquitted, the accusation will anger some female voters and possibly make him politically radioactive, particularly after past accusation, mostly hushed up, of numerous sexual escapades that got out of hand.

Sarkozy must be dancing with joy in the Elysee Palace. DSK's bizarre Times Square misadventure very likely secures Sarko the presidency in 2012 because his other potential Socialist rivals are even less popular than he is.

Since he's on a roll, Sarko must also now be praying that his bitter conservative rival, tall, patrician former prime minister, Dominique de Villepin, won't shake off his current legal troubles and challenge Sarko for the center-right leadership. Sarko got de Villepin charged with slander and an attempted frame-up in an obscure financial scandal.

Interestingly, polls show that France's most respected and trusted politician remains former president Jacques Chirac, who is also embroiled in his old political funding scandals.

Right now, Marine LePen's hard right National Front has growing momentum due to mounting resentment against immigration, unemployment and globalization. The surge of France's xenophobic far right is stealing away droves of voters from Sarkozy's conservative party.

Marine and father Jean-Marie are often accused of being fascists. They are not. I spent much time with LePen senior, exploring his views. They are of France's traditional ultra conservative Catholic right that found voice in the World War II Vichy government.

They are certainly anti-Jewish, anti-Muslim and anti-immigration, but not fascists of the Mussolini school. To understand this important difference, read Prof. Robert Paxton's fine book, The Anatomy of Fascism.

Sarkozy's reaction to the growing challenge from the LePen challenge has been to move even more rightward by bombing Libya and Ivory Coast, issuing threats against Syria, and getting closer to the United States and Israel. But recent polls show seven of ten French dislike or detest the hyperkinetic, flashy Sarkozy – know as "president bling" – and don't regard him as properly French.

Sarko also faces some highly dangerous financial scandals. The most dangerous is the scandal over secret kickbacks he may have authorized over the sale of French submarines to Pakistan in the 1990's that may have led to the deaths in Karachi of a number of French naval technicians.

But Sarko just got some more very good news that could sweep away these dark clouds: France's economy grew a sizzling 1% in the first three months of 2011. Germany's grew 1.5%. Northern Europe's economy is on a roll, even though southern Europe is stuck in a ditch.

So now, the big question is, if Strauss-Kahn ends up in a New York State prison, will French voters who are fed up with Sarkozy throw their votes to Marine Le Pen's National Front? Or will it be Roi Sarko in the Elysee Palace?

Ron Paul runs for president again. Will GOP embrace a libertarian in 2012?

Ron Paul runs for president again. Will GOP embrace a libertarian in 2012?
Ron Paul began his third run for the White House yesterday, saying that 'people are agreeing with much of what I've been saying for 30 years.' A key hurdle: selling his foreign policy to GOP voters.
By Josh Burek / May 13, 2011

Creating jobs. Strengthening family values. Improving education. Protecting Social Security. Those are the leitmotifs that generally mark a presidential candidate's stump speech. They're poll-tested to resonate with the broadest possible audience, which is why most stump speeches sound eerily similar.

Not Ron Paul's.

Back in December 2007, I took my family to New Hampshire to listen to the candidates speak. Hillary Rodham Clinton's event was jammed. Mitt Romney's was, too. So we ended up in a hotel conference room listening to Ron Paul (a longtime Republican congressman from Texas) whip up the crowd with … references to ancient Roman emperors who weakened their currencies.

I've seen grown women swoon at a Seal concert. But I never thought I'd see it happen during a discourse about the Federal Reserve. The ecstasy of his devoted followers, however, never materialized into a broad following and Mr. Paul's candidacy soon faded.

Now Paul's back in the ring. He formally announced his White House run yesterday. But unlike his efforts in 1988 or 2008, the explosion of US debt along with the weakening of the US dollar have turned his fringe talking points into mainstream issues. Paul was a one-man tea party before the tea party movement emerged in 2009, and his consistency as a fiscal conservative certainly gives him major street cred.

Those who back Paul were certainly buoyed by a shock poll from CNN last week that showed Paul running better against President Obama than any other GOP candidate.

The problem, though, is that Paul is not running in a Libertarian primary. He has to win the support of Republican voters, many of whom have expressed coolness toward his rigorously anti-war, isolationist foreign-policy views.

For example, consider the audience's reaction to Rudy Giuliani's rebuttal of Paul's comments about 9/11 in this Republican debate from May 2007:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AD7dnFDdwu0&feature=player_embedded

Four years later, Paul still doesn't shy away from controversy. Just before launching his presidential bid this week, he told a radio host that he wouldn't have authorized the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, citing respect for the rule of law.

That may be a principled stand, but it's probably not one that will endear him to conservative primary voters.

The irony is that Paul's non-interventionist foreign policy was in some degree a hallmark of Republican thinking as recently as 2000, when George W. Bush campaigned on a policy of avoiding nation-building or using troops as the world's policeman. 9/11 changed all that, which proves that American presidents can adjust their priorities with great speed. But so can voters. Nearly a century ago, the nation backed Woodrow Wilson – perhaps the most progressive US president ever. A short while later, voters embraced Calvin Coolidge – arguably our most libertarian chief executive.

Is the timing right for Paul? He certainly thinks so:

Announcing his run on ABC's Good Morning America, Paul said the "time has come around to the point where the people are agreeing with much of what I've been saying for 30 years."

"So I think the time is right."

Is it? I plan on taking my family back to New Hampshire this December. If we can't get into the Ron Paul rally because of a traffic jam, we'll know for sure.

Like many liberty-minded people, I tend to be a bit pessimistic. I find myself doubting that the great mass of Americans can be convinced, awakened, or converted to a genuine love of human liberty. Every day that passes brings another outrage: a child molested by the TSA, a private business seized by regulators, or an innocent individual imprisoned for crimes defined by nothing more than the whim of this legislature or that. And the outcry, if present, is subdued and muted, except in a few pockets of protest.

My malaise risked transformation into something more severe as I watched the shameful celebrations and media gloating after the bin Laden assassination. Then comfort came from an unlikely source.

I found myself on a televised opinion panel for "likely Republican primary voters." The experience alternated between horribly frustrating and incredibly amusing, as you might expect it would. In the end, however, my adventure in Neocon Land was strangely enlightening, and even a little bit encouraging. If nothing else, it provided an opportunity to learn to tie, and to sport, my brand new Mises-crest bow tie.

I suppose I was chosen for the panel on account of being a member of some email list that I had signed up for on my journey toward libertarianism. (It took me some time, several wars, and a heavy dose of Austrian economics to realize that conservatism was not consistent with my beliefs or the nature of human freedom.)

This particular gathering was organized for the purpose of gauging reactions to the Republican presidential debate in Greenville, SC, on May 5th. As I anticipated, there was a tremendous level of ignorance in the room. These were not well-informed political junkies; they appeared to be jingoistic, anti-immigrant neoconservatives of the most stereotypical sort. I walked into a discussion about the brilliance of Donald Trump's imperialist and protectionist policy suggestions which, shockingly, gave way to a conversation about the evil illegal immigrants who, apparently, are taking all the jobs and committing all the crimes. This set the tone for the night. The consensus was that the path to prosperity is simple: build a border fence, shoot anyone who approaches it, take all the oil in Iraq, and levy heavy tariffs on Chinese exports.

What about this was encouraging, you ask? Nothing so far. The rest of the night went similarly. The questions asked throughout the session were shallow and leading. The pollster told us when to respond to the Republican debate we were watching, and he implied strongly what form the responses should take.

Ron Paul was jeered by this committee of 29 because he suggested that the war on drugs was a waste of time; but everyone got a kick out of his rhetorical question: "How many people here would use heroin if it were legal?" Gary Johnson was similarly derided when he suggested that immigrants, even of the illegal type, put more into the economy than they extract. I think the woman behind me actually started hissing at that point. Trump was hailed as a genius for his 25 percent China-tariff idea, and as a bold, brave figure when he condemned them for manipulating their currency, as if the United States were a bastion of sound, legitimate monetary policy. When Paul brought up the crazy notion that the Federal Reserve might have something to do with the economic collapse of 2008 and the subsequent price inflation and stagnation, blank stares won the day. I innocently asked one of my neighbors if he had heard of the Austrian theory of the business cycle. He angrily responded, "I know what a business is!"

I left the event dejected and thoroughly disgusted. But after a few days in this state, a thought occurred to me, and my initial misgivings gave way to a ray of hope. The members of the group that gathered that night, though woefully uninformed and generically partisan, were also eminently teachable. They genuinely cared about the consequences of the course pursued by the federal government. They were impressionable and surprisingly receptive to ideas unlike their own.

The most vocal proponent of protectionism in the room eventually conceded that tariffs are destructive, rather than constructive. He accepted my rough paraphrase of Human Action: All that a tariff can achieve is to divert production from those locations in which the output per unit of input is higher to locations in which it is lower. A tariff does not increase production; it curtails it.

Our discussion of the immigrant question yielded similar fruit. There was universal agreement on the importance of a free market, but limited understanding of what that actually means. But therein is the source of my hope.

Statism and interventionism are not, for most, the result of careful consideration of all the alternatives. They are merely a knee-jerk reaction to events, arising more from herd instinct than careful analysis simplistic patriotism from those who haven't the time or inclination to read Nock or Rothbard. This is why I see political action and involvement as essential, even to the most ardent anarchist. We probably won't win what we desire at the ballot box. But, as Jacob Huebert brilliantly pointed out, that is not the only result of the electoral process. There is a great multitude that honestly desires peace, freedom, and the preservation of individual rights. They are groping for the truth about the economy and the nature of the state; but they search in vain because they don't know where to look. We can show them.

Take, for example, the tea party. My experience with members of this movement is that they are not antiliberty, though some of their views would qualify as such. They are just at a different place in their journey. Fiscal issues have awakened many of them, if not yet fully. But, as Thoreau famously wrote in Walden,

The millions are awake enough for physical labor; but only one in a million is awake enough for effective intellectual exertion, only one in a hundred millions to a poetic or divine life. To be awake is to be alive. I have never yet met a man who was quite awake. How could I have looked him in the face?

I walked out of my adventure in Neocon Land as downhearted as I have been in a long time, but I have come to see the true import of the gathering in the lesson it taught me: most people tend to gravitate toward liberty they just have not heard it properly defined.

**JP** the game of framing Pakistan is on

The game is getting ready to frame Pakistan, an old plan for which the time is getting near....and once they do and try to attack (which is inevitable), then you will see a the beginning of a great war, and that will indulge the whole region, a war that has been predicted for hundreds of years, which Zhaid Hamid relate to the Ghazwa-e-Hind...they day does not seems far...prepare and stand in the way of all those who are trying to incite hatred against our nation and our country...Afghanistan is a gone cause for Nato, they are loosing  badly but their real objectives are in Pakistan.... for which we have been talking about for years...now is the time to back our troops, our loyalists, and prepare in every aspect for the long haul effort... it is going to be the end of one big empire and the beginning of the last stage after which Dajjal will expose himself for his final 37 days (Allah knows better...)
