Republicans and Local Control

Republicans and Local Control
Posted by David Boaz
August 28, 2012 @ 12:24 pm

Jennifer Rubin, seeking to dispel "myths about conservatives," takes on the idea that "the GOP doesn't believe in community:
President Obama likes to say that Republicans want everyone to be "on his own." In fact, conservatives, as Romney put it in a speech at Liberty University this year, believe family, communities, churches and other civil institutions are critical building blocks in society. They favor investing authority in the level of government closest to the people (locales and states), which they believe is most responsive and governs best.
That's a nice theory, and it's one that keeps many libertarians voting Republican.

But in practice Republicans show less respect for state and local powers than you might think. Republicans, including Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan, supported -- and still support -- President Bush's proposals for federal takeovers of education and marriage law. And I've never heard them question the Bush administration's defense and vigorous prosecution of federal marijuana prohibition in the face of state efforts at reform.

Would that we had a Republican party that actually favored "investing authority in the level of government closest to the people."

Hunter Spanjer Hunter Spanjer signs his name (Screen grab)

Report an error

A Nebraska preschool is asking a three-year-old deaf boy to change his name because it violates the school board's weapons policy.

Hunter Spanjer signs his first name by making what looks like shooting gestures with both hands. He crosses his fingers when he does it - a modification to show it's his proper name.

But the Grand Island Public Schools board says its "Weapons in Schools" policy bans "any instrument ... that looks like a weapon." The school wants him to change the sign, a request Hunter's family says is both unfair and silly.

"Anybody that I have talked to thinks this is absolutely ridiculous. This is not threatening in any way," Hunter's grandmother Janet Logue told local news station 1011.

"It's a symbol. It's an actual sign, a registered sign," said Hunter's father, Brian Spanjer.

The school board wants to work out a compromise.

"We are working with the parents to come to the best solution we can for the child," said school board spokesman Jack Sheard.

But the Spanjers say they aren't interested. They're bringing in lawyers from the National Association of the Deaf to fight for their son's right to sign his own name.

Meanwhile, local residents told the station the school is overreacting and that Hunter poses no danger.

Obama putting more troops into Muslim countries. Wonder if he got congressional approval for this deployment?

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - A departure ceremony is planned for 565 Kentucky National Guard soldiers who will deploy to Africa for nine months.

Maj. Gen. Edward W. Tonini, adjutant general for Kentucky, will attend the sendoff ceremony Friday at the Frankfort Convention Center for soldiers assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 138th Field Artillery.

The soldiers will deploy to the Horn of Africa where they will work to promote regional security and stability.

Bet Obama isn't sending our troops over to protect the Christians who are being persecuted and killed by Islamic terrorists.

No SIR!! It was a death threat to a white....

Thank You for your input.

Apparently, Facebook approved a "Kill Mitt Romney" page that was put up and left up over 17 days.Twitter followed a similar example in the George Zimmerman case a few months ago.

The description for the page indicates its purpose, which is a directly threat on the life of Mitt Romney stating,

"This is a page advocating the murder of Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney."

What's even more disturbing is the page had 30 likes!

While many users complained about the page and rightly so, all they received was an email stating the following:

"Hi,

Thanks for your recent report of a potential violation on Facebook. After reviewing your report, we were not able to confirm that the specific page you reported violates Facebook's Statement of Rights and Responsibilities.

Learn more about what we do and don't allow by reviewing the Facebook Community Standards:https://www.facebook.com/communitystandards.

Thanks,
Viki

Give us feedback to let us know how we are doing."

According to Facebook's community standards, users are prohibited from "credibly (threatening) harm to others, or (organizing) acts of real-world violence." The community standards goes on to read:

"Safety is Facebook's top priority. You may not credibly threaten to harm others, or organize acts of real-world violence. We remove content and may escalate to law enforcement when we perceive a genuine risk of physical harm, or a direct threat to public safety. We also prohibit promoting, planning or celebrating any of your actions if they have, or could, result in financial harm to others, including theft and vandalism."

Even as I was researching the issue, the page had been pulled from Facebook. Apparently word got out and hundreds of people flooded Facebook with protests about the page, which apparently drew more than an automated response.

One wonders if things like this will continue Facebook's downward spiral among Wall Street Stocks. One thing is for sure, no one should be threatening anyone's life. It's good Facebook finally pulled the page, even if it took an avalanche of emails reporting it to do so.

How Real Is Voter Fraud?

by hardnox1

John Fund weighs in on this issue.  The problem is more rampant that actually thought.  The libs are against any voter ID laws claiming that any voter ID or voter roll reform would disenfranchise voters.  Imagine for a moment if voter fraud were a Republican phenomena the Democrats would be screaming for voter ID 24/7.

It is estimated that there are 2 million dead people on the voter rolls.  This is in addition to the duplicate, illegal, and felon voters.

What should be the rank-ordered budget priorities of the U.S. Federal Government?

What should be the rank-ordered budget priorities of the U.S. Federal Government?

Stephan Kinsella, patent attorney and libertarian writer

1. Put aside a small amount to hire a panel to administer steps 2 and 3.
2. return the rest of the budget (at least 99%) to the taxpayers as restitution.
3. Disband and go home.

Meaningless Words in Politics

Meaningless Words in Politics
by Ron Paul

As we enter the fall political season, we will hear a great deal of rhetoric from both major political parties and their many candidates for office. It's important for us to remember, however, that words can be made meaningless by misuse or overuse. And when we as citizens allow politicians to obscure the truth by distorting words, we diminish ourselves and our nation.?

For example, we've all heard politicians use the words "democracy" and "freedom" countless times. They are used interchangeably in modern political discourse, yet their true meanings are very different. They have become what George Orwell termed " meaningless words". Words like "freedom," "democracy," and "justice," Orwell explained, have been abused for so l?ong that their original meanings have been eviscerated. In Orwell's view, such words were "often used in a consciously dishonest way."

Without precise meanings behind words, politicians and elites can obscure reality and condition people to reflexively associate certain words with positive or negative perceptions. In other words, unpleasant facts can be hidden behind purposely meaningless language. As just one example, Americans have been conditioned to accept the word "democracy" as a synonym for freedom. Thus we are conditioned to believe that democracy is always and everywhere benevolent.

The problem is that democracy is not freedom. Democracy is simply majoritarianism, which is inherently incompatible with freedom. While our Constitution certainly features certain democratic mechanisms, it also features inherently undemocratic mechanisms like the First Amendment and the Electoral College. America is a constitutional republic, not a democracy. Yet we've been bombarded with the meaningless word "democracy" for so long that few Americans understand the difference.

If we intend to use the word freedom in an honest way, we should have the simple integrity to give it real meaning: Freedom is living without government coercion. So when a politician talks about freedom or liberty -- regardless of the issue being discussed -- ask yourself whether he is advocating more government force or less.

The words "liberal" and "conservative" have also been abused. "Liberalism," which once stood for civil, political, and economic liberties, has become a synonym for omnipotent coercive government. Liberalism has been redefined to mean liberation from material wants, always via a large and benevolent government that exists to create equality on earth.

"Conservatism," meanwhile, once meant respect for tradition and distrust of active government. But in recent decades conservatism has been redefined as support for big-government grandiosity via military adventurism, corporatism, and inflationary monetary policy. The modern political right has redefined conservatism into support for an all-powerful central state, provided that the state furthers supposedly conservative goals.

Orwell certainly was right about the use of meaningless words in politics. Our task, therefore, is to reclaim our language and reclaim our liberties. If we hope to remain free, we must cut through the fog and attach concrete meanings to the words politicians use to deceive us.

Before I write what I say "first hand" today let me add the following:

1 .I believe strongly in the importance of (high performing)government ( I am truly sorry if this sounds like government bashing- it should not.  I am not an unrelfexive government basher.
2, I have helped multiple government agencies improve performance-   I know what govevernment can accomplish - and it is impressive and remarkable.
3.  BUt as part of establishing credibilty  that government can accomplish tremendous things, but also when it screws up - it is important to be objectivie and I offer the following:

Today, on Wisconsin Avenue - when  I was coming home I saw two MPD cars and five FBI cars in front of the -  yet to be fully opened M & T bank branch. There were two MPD officers with MDP cars flashing light and five FBI Suburban SUVS  with at least three flashing lights. There were two uniformed MPD officers on site. And 10-12 FBI Personnell - who were wearing FBI T-shirts - clearly marked saying  things like : FBI evidence team.

I went to ask one of the FBI personnnel what happened ( since I live a block or two away). But as i was asking of the FBI folks re: what had happened. he went back to the  FBI Chevrolet Suburban and found a DCPW parking ticket on the windshield. He said to me "this is how DC thanks us." And I said: " I want you to know that this is not representative of DC. And as a DC resident, I want to thank  you for your service."

4. I know we having a parking challenge in Georgetown. And I know many if not most of DCPW employees are great.

5. But there is no excuse for this. If we are to be government supporters and argue based on the facts- we also have to view "facts as friendlly" and be willing to address when goverment is messing up totallly  We need the crebiilit on the other side to be able to say when government has totally messed up. And when DCPW is putting parking tickets on FBI Suburbans during an active investigaition of a crime scene - DC government is screwing up.
