Re: The House GOP Paul Ryan Budget: Tax Fantasy

What is ridiculous, is to think that taxing the literal hand full of individuals who are ultra rich,  (and excluding those individuals who are "S" corporations and small businesses)  would somehow resolve the problem of education and infrastructure, is just flat out asinine, and nothing less than class warfare.

Moreover,  the whole sing-songy,  "Pay Your Fair Share"  is just as ridiculous.  These individuals are paying a far greater tax rate than folks like.....Tommy,  who probably pays no taxes.

Re: Photographer reflects on bullied gay teen Rafael Morelos' suicide

Agreed.   "Progressives"  still don't get the big picture.....However well intentioned.

I actually think the real solution is school choice.  You should be free to re enroll your kid in the school where your child is safest, fits in best, will be best educated.

And you should take your tax money with you when you leave.

If some teachers and administrators cannot figure out how to keep gays kids from being beaten or how to teach kids with illiterate parents how to read, those schools should close and those teachers be unemployed

And from discussions of this topic on other lists, and from the news, it is clear that Asian, hispanic and white kids are being beaten and harassed in black majority schools, and I am sure somewhere there are some black kids being harassed when they a minorities too

Cameron Diaz, technically Latina, reports she was beaten for being blond by the hispanic Giles in her school

Bruce,

While I do indeed recognize the difficulties in being "different"
within any bubble of society (gay is only one in a long list) the
fault lies in how well any individual is/is not prepared to deal with
the situation.

The answer is NOT to legislate childrens' morays it is to hold the
parents responsible for their childs' acts. We must also allow
families the leeway to discipline their children.

Kids are taught in school that they have a right to not be disciplined
and never have to "pay the piper" for their actions. There was far
less need for supposed "bully control" when the principal was allowed
to swing the paddle followed at home by mom and dad doing the same...
double jeopardy did not apply in my house or any that I knew growing
up.

Kids commit suicide when they see no solution to the matter... another
law putting more people in jail won't solve this... neither will a
"touchy feely" education with no repercussions. When kids see (and
feel) the results of their actions they will change their ways. Until
then there will be no solution.

Re: Photographer reflects on bullied gay teen Rafael Morelos' suicide

The Democratic party and the public school system whose educrats fund the Democrats is the main engine of homophobia, bullying and racism and racial segregation and illiteracy and unemployability in this country

Re: The House GOP Paul Ryan Budget: Tax Fantasy

it would be obscene to use the money to lower tax rates for
rich taxpayers when the nation is starved for investment in jobs,
education and infrastructure.

So you think that they would not invest that money? Investment is what
creates jobs you dumbass.

Brutal Torture Killing of Gay Chilean Man Result in Calls for Anti-Discriminiation Laws

Brutal Torture Killing of Gay Chilean Man Result in Calls for
Anti-Discriminiation Laws

The United Nations human rights office urged the Government of Chile
to pass a law against discrimination, including on grounds of sexual
orientation and gender identity, following the recent killing of a
young gay man in the capital, Santiago.

"We also urge Chile to enact hate crime legislation that establishes
hatred based on various grounds, including sexual orientation and
gender identity, as an aggravating factor for the purposes of criminal
prosecution," said a spokesperson for the Office of the UN High
Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Rupert Colville.

Speaking at a news conference in Geneva, Mr. Colville said that the
killing of 24-year-old Daniel Zamudio is just the latest reminder of
the gravity and prevalence of homophobic violence that exists in all
regions.

"The case should be seen in the wide context of hate-motivated
violence against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender person around
the world," he said. "This time it happened in Santiago, Chile, but it
happens every day on the streets of towns and cities all over the
world."

Mr. Zamudio died on Tuesday, 25 days after being viciously assaulted
by a group of alleged neo-Nazis in a Santiago park, according to
OHCHR.

"He was reportedly tortured for an hour by his attackers, who stubbed
cigarettes out on him, carved swastikas into his body, and mutilated
him in other ways," said Mr. Colville. "We deplore the violent
criminal act that took the life of this young man and urge the Chilean
Congress to pass a law against discrimination, including on grounds of
sexual orientation and gender identity, in full compliance with
relevant international human rights standards."

In addition to sparking a public outcry in Chile, the attack has also
provoked a debate about homophobia and hate crimes, as well as calls
for the country's Parliament to pass an anti-discrimination law which
was initially presented in 2005 and is currently before lawmakers,
awaiting approval by the lower house.

Sources Claim New 'Bully' Re-Cut Will Be PG-13

Why not just bleep out the MPAA deemed unacceptable profanity like
they do on television for a PG version? This film is too important not
to be seen by youth. The Unrated release prevents many from seeing it
at all. -T

From Coleman:

Sources Claim New 'Bully' Re-Cut Will Be PG-13

Sources Claim New 'Bully' Re-Cut Will Be PG-13
The MPAA still won't grant Bully anything less than an "R" rating, and
in the face of its obstinacy the Weinstein Co. now suggests it might
re-cut the film, sans profanity, to secure a rating of "PG 13." This
is from "two people familiar with the company's plans who were not
authorized to speak about them publicly," according to the Los Angeles
Times. Officially, however, the Weinstein Co. still plans to release
the film in mid-April with no rating at all. From the Times:

The Weinstein Co. denied that changes were being made now but allowed
for the possibility in the coming weeks. "At this time, there are no
plans to change the film for a PG-13," Stephen Bruno, the company's
head of marketing, told 24 Frames on Friday. "We are in constant
conversation with the MPAA and hope a compromise can be reached." The
MPAA has been steadfast that the existing cut wll not be given
anything lower than an R.

The Times explains a weird quirk of the MPAA rating system: That
merely bleeping profanity isn't enough to lower a film's rating,
presumably because even impressionable kids are sufficiently worldly
to know what ugly noises are being made beneath the beeps. Which makes
one wonder why they need to be protected from profanity in the first
place, but never mind.

Removing all profanity from Bully will pose difficulties for Weinstein
Co., because one of Bully's most important scenes is full of the
stuff:

The scene that earned the film an R features one teen threatening
another as the two sit side-by-side on the bus, with profanities
interwoven throughout the scene ... Weinstein and filmmaker Lee Hirsch
have been adamant that the scene remain in the film as is to show the
full force of what bullied kids face

The House GOP Paul Ryan Budget: Tax Fantasy

Tax Fantasy

CloseDiggRedditTumblrPermalink Congressman Paul Ryan, the author of
the House Republican budget, is not the first politician to go long on
promises and short on details. But his budget, which passed the House
last week with no Democratic votes, takes untruth in taxes to a new
level.

Room for Debate: The Ryan Budget: Policy, or Just Politics? (March 27,
2012) Mr. Ryan claims that he can drastically cut income tax rates
without adding to the deficit, but he hasn't specified how he would
make up the lost revenue, an estimated $4.6 trillion over 10 years.
Instead, he has said he would end or reduce unnamed deductions,
exemptions and loopholes and defended this dodge by saying that he
first wants to build consensus for the concept of pairing lower rates
with fewer write-offs. That's already a mainstay of many tax reform
plans.

The problem is that politicians' most cherished constituencies are big
recipients of the most cherished tax breaks — including the exclusion
for employer-provided health insurance; deductions for mortgage
interest, state and local taxes and charitable donations; tax deferral
for retirement savings; and special low taxes on investment income.
With some 70 percent of an annual $1.1 trillion in tax breaks flowing
to the top 20 percent of taxpayers, and 20 percent going to the middle
rung, politicians are loath to champion the end of specific tax
breaks.

Another problem is that ending tax breaks would not end the need for
government to help with many of the activities subsidized by the tax
code, like employee health insurance and retirement savings. Tax
subsidies may not be the most efficient or fairest way to support
social and economic goals, but there is a need for public efforts to
help achieve many of their aims.

The question is how much can reasonably be saved by ending or reducing
tax breaks. A new analysis by the Congressional Research Service puts
the savings at $100 billion to $150 billion a year. The aggressive
deficit reduction plan by the Bipartisan Policy Center, a
Washington-based think tank, would generate $3.5 trillion in savings
to 2020. A proposal by President Obama, scorned by Republicans, would
raise $584 billion in 10 years by capping deductions for high-income
taxpayers.

The upshot is that Mr. Ryan will never come up with a workable way to
pay for his $4.6 trillion tax cut. And even if he found substantial
offsets, it would be obscene to use the money to lower tax rates for
rich taxpayers when the nation is starved for investment in jobs,
education and infrastructure. What's needed is a realistic approach,
starting with letting the high-end Bush era tax cuts expire at the end
of this year and closing blatant loopholes, including the
unconscionably low tax rate for private equity partners. Raising taxes
on the rich is not a cure-all, but there will never be consensus for
broad reform without first ending the lavish tax breaks at the top.
Realism also requires new tax sources, including a financial
transactions tax. But being realistic is not Mr. Ryan's style.

CloseDiggRedditTumblrPermalink For anyone who still thought legal
conservatives are dedicated to judicial restraint, the oral arguments
before the Supreme Court on the health care case should put that idea
to rest. There has been no court less restrained in signaling its
willingness to replace law made by Congress with law made by justices.

This should not be surprising. Republican administrations, spurred by
conservative interest groups since the 1980s, handpicked each of the
conservative justices to reshape or strike down law that fails to
reflect conservative political ideology.

When Antonin Scalia and Anthony Kennedy were selected by the Reagan
administration, the goal was to choose judges who would be eager to
undo liberal precedents. By the time John Roberts Jr. and Samuel Alito
Jr. were selected in the second Bush administration, judicial
"restraint" was no longer an aim among conservatives. They were chosen
because their professional records showed that they would advance a
political ideology that limits government and promotes market
freedoms, with less regard to the general welfare.

There is an enormous distinction to be made between the approaches of
the Roberts court and the Warren court, which conservatives have long
railed against for being an activist court. For one thing,
Republican-appointed justices who led that court, Chief Justice Earl
Warren and Justice William Brennan Jr., were not selected to effect
constitutional change as part of their own political agenda.

During an era of major social tumult, when the public's attitudes
about racial equality, fairness in the workings of democracy and the
dignity of the individual proved incompatible with old precedents,
those centrists led the court to take new positions in carrying out
democratic principles. Yet they were extremely mindful of the need to
maintain the court's legitimacy, and sought unanimity in major
rulings. Cooper v. Aaron, the 1958 landmark case that said states are
bound by Supreme Court rulings, was unanimous. So was Katzenbach v.
McClung, the 1964 case upholding the constitutionality of parts of the
Civil Rights Act under the commerce clause.

The four moderates on the court have a leftish bent, but they see
their role as stewards of the law, balancing the responsibility to
enforce the Constitution through judicial review against the duty to
show deference to the will of the political branches. In that respect,
they and the conservatives seem to be following entirely different
rules.

That difference is playing out in the health care case. Established
precedents support broad authority for Congress to regulate national
commerce, and the health care market is unquestionably national in
scope. Yet to Justice Kennedy the mandate requiring most Americans to
obtain health insurance represents "a step beyond what our cases have
allowed, the affirmative duty to act, to go into commerce." To Justice
Stephen Breyer, it's clear that "if there are substantial effects on
interstate commerce, Congress can act."

Likewise, Justice Scalia's willingness to delve into health care
politics seems utterly alien to his moderate colleagues. On the
question of what would happen if the mandate were struck down, Justice
Scalia launched into a senatorial vote count: "You can't repeal the
rest of the act because you're not going to get 60 votes in the Senate
to repeal the rest." Justice Breyer, by contrast, said firmly: "I
would stay out of politics. That's for Congress; not us."

If the conservatives decide that they can sidestep the Constitution to
negate Congress's choices on crucial national policies, the court's
legitimacy — and the millions of Americans who don't have insurance —
will pay a very heavy price. Chief Justice Roberts has the opportunity
to avoid this disastrous outcome by forging even a narrow ruling to
uphold the mandate and the rest of the law. A split court striking
down the act will be declaring itself virtually unfettered by the law.
And if that happens along party lines, with five Republican-appointed
justices supporting the challenge led by 26 Republican governors, the
court will mark itself as driven by politics.
