Shock: Christian Coalition founder Pat Robertson favors marijuana legalization

Shock: Christian Coalition founder Pat Robertson favors marijuana legalization
By Stephen C. Webster
Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010 -- 3:29 pm

Count this among the 10 things nobody ever expected to see in their lifetimes: 700 Club founder Pat Robertson, one of the cornerstone figures of America's Christian right movement, has come out in favor of legalizing marijuana.

Calling it getting "smart" on crime, Robertson aired a clip on a recent episode of his 700 Club television show that advocated the viewpoint of drug law reformers who run prison outreach ministries.

A narrator even claimed that religious prison outreach has "saved" millions in public funds by helping to reduce the number of prisoners who return shortly after being released.

"It got to be a big deal in campaigns: 'He's tough on crime,' and 'lock 'em up!'" the Christian Coalition founder said. "That's the way these guys ran and, uh, they got elected. But, that wasn't the answer."

His co-host added that the success of religious-run dormitories for drug and alcohol cessation therapy present an "opportunity" for faith-based communities to lead the way on drug law reforms.

"We're locking up people that have taken a couple puffs of marijuana and next thing you know they've got 10 years with mandatory sentences," Robertson continued. "These judges just say, they throw up their hands and say nothing we can do with these mandatory sentences. We've got to take a look at what we're considering crimes and that's one of 'em.

"I'm ... I'm not exactly for the use of drugs, don't get me wrong, but I just believe that criminalizing marijuana, criminalizing the possession of a few ounces of pot, that kinda thing it's just, it's costing us a fortune and it's ruining young people. Young people go into prisons, they go in as youths and come out as hardened criminals. That's not a good thing."

Robertson has in recent years come under fire for increasingly flamboyant comments, such as calling for the assassinations of foreign leaders and blaming gay people for the destruction wrought by Hurricane Katrina.

Conservatives signing up for drug policy reform

The segment, while significant for illustrating a key conservative stalwart's shifting opinion on the drug war, was mainly a plug for a new conservative group called "Right on Crime," which parlays the arguments of groups like the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) and Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP) into conservative-leaning messages.

"Our marijuana prohibition laws, which send people to prison for merely possessing a plant, are clearly immoral," LEAP executive director Neill Franklin, a former Baltimore narcotics officer, told Raw Story.

"As a Christian, and as a former law enforcer who is now working to undo the damage these laws have done to our families and our communities, I'm glad to see Pat Robertson joining the chorus of faith leaders calling for reform."

Some faith-based groups, like the Council of Churches and Church IMPACT, also helped promote California's failed Prop. 19 ballot initiative, which would have legalized marijuana cultivation, sales and consumption by adults over 21-years-old. It failed to gain a majority in the state's 2010 elections.

President Obama has maintained his opposition to the legalization of marijuana, although his Department of Justice has largely taken a hands-off approach to states where voters have approved the drug's use if prescribed by a doctor.

Pat Robertson was a Republican candidate for the presidency in 1980, but saw his political ambitions dashed in the primaries by Ronald Reagan. Though he later earned Robertson's endorsement, President Reagan went on to significantly escalate the war on America's drug users.

This video is from the 700 Club, broadcast by the CBN Network. (Segment on marijuana law reform is at beginning.)

Three Iowa Representatives Explain Impeachment Procedure Of Supreme Court Judges

Three Iowa Representatives Explain Impeachment Procedure Of Supreme Court Judges
Dec. 22, 2010

Circulating via email around Iowa today:

This is a very informative 35 minute radio interview with newly elected Iowa State House Representative Kim Pearson, Tom Shaw and Glenn Massie. They explain why they are drafting articles of impeachment against four Iowa Supreme Court judges. This has never been tried before in Iowa or anywhere else, but it makes a lot of sense. Even if you do not live in Iowa, I urge everyone to listen to it when you have the time. You will learn a LOT! It could set a precedence throughout our country.

Salam Alaikum,

Dear Sir, i have been reading emails from both of you, please note some facts as under i thing these will make you clear what should one be.

1. Allah has chosen the islam as the best religion for the mankind, and Allah has addressed all the humans in quran some where specifically to non muslims, muslims etc.
2. in surah e baqrah Allah says "Wa Qulu Lilnase Husna" that is talk with the humans in good manner and invite them for good deeds.
3. so the Islam Specially and all the other religions motivate the humans for the humanity and the ethics as well.
4. all the religions have learnt the message of humanity and the ethics from the Islam.
5. Allah has sent all the Anbiya and Rusuls for the training of humanity,
6. So a good Muslim will be good citizen where ever is he. but in islam all the muslims are brothers, take the example of Muhajrin and Ansars in Madina after the Hijrat of Muhammad (S A W, Peace be upon him). where ansar's share almost everything with Muhajirins etc.
7. Meesaq e Madina - was a treaty based on the defense of madina and "Wahida" never meant as Muslims and the Yahuds are one and are Ummat it means that when ever Muslims or the Yahuds will be invaded both will be fight together with the invaders and this was only for the defense purposes as the muslims were weak at that time, and Muhammad (Peace be upon him) signed the treaty only because of this reason and this was a political pact/decision and later on coz of betrayal of Yahuds this Pact/Treaty was broken and even Muslims fought against the Yahuds (Ghazwa e Khaiber).

8. an other important thing is all the religions taught the humanity to the human, but there will be no Ajar/Sawab and result in the failure in Akhrat, where as there is Ajar/Sawab on every good deed in Islam if it is in accordance with the teaching of holy prophet (Peace be upon him)

and most important which should always be considered that what are the motives behind the discussion (to let down each other islam condemn this  or the search for the truth and the facts).

any how may Allah Bless us all and forgive us as we all are struggling for the betterment of Ummah.

Greetings Everyone!

Tomorrow is Christmas Eve, and I will be in and out, but I also have to do some last minute Christmas shopping, and I wanted to take the opportunity to wish each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays!

This has been a most interesting year for me.  I have spent a good deal of time traveling between Washington D.C. and my home here in Tampa.  I also had the pleasure of working and traveling between New Orleans Louisiana during the BP Horizon Platform Discharge; and gratified that I played a very small part in helping our Nation in restoring the Gulf, of which I truly love.  I also managed to make it for a short, "cloak and daggar" type visit to Seoul South Korea, and I was able to work and visit Deustchland, in particular the Bonn/Köln North Rhine Westphalia region of Germany on four separate occasions during 2010.

I fell in love with a woman that I believe to this day is my soul mate, and I am grateful to God for the blessings that have been bestowed upon me!

Next year brings up some new exciting challenges.   On January 2nd, 2011, I will be relocating temporarily to Köln Germany, and will most likely be over there for the most part of 2011.   At this juncture, it is fair to say that my time will be extremely limited, as it has been during 2010,  but I do want you all to know, that I think the world of each and every one of you!  You each bring something special to this group, and I feel as though you all are a part of my extended family!  For those members who are in Europe, I do hope that there might be an opportunity where we might in fact get a chance to meet in person!

Here's wishing you all, a most festive holiday season, hopefully shared with you and your loved ones!   Frohe Weihnachten an Alle Unsere Mitglieder!

My best to you all,

Re: GOP say's "no" to 9-11 responders health care

Mustang,

Before I took my position I read the building safety codes for NYC/S. I looked up up the standard forms about building material use on file with NYC fire and police as is and was required by state and federal law.  The warnings were all there and when firemen are not putting out fires in NYC (or anywhere else) they are visiting their districts and reviewing those "special" requirements of each building. They were indeed "aware" and "equipped" The right stuff was "on the truck". They simply neglected to put it on.

They don their protective equipment every time they leave the firehouse.... was this emergency happening any faster than any other ? NO.

They simply ignored their training.

As to it being an "attack on America", fine but why pay these people more or allow them greater benefits than the military ? (they were already getting that prior to the event). If it were an attack then the old "Militia" laws should have applied.

As to names for the other sites... why ask, there are none. They showed up at the pentagon wearing the equipment and following their training.... it was on the truck.

The problem at the Pentagon was taken care of by lesser paid, lesser trained, people that simply paid attention in the site visits and training classes.

It is NOT the fact that they were paid but the fact that they were FULLY insured for this.

A summary from NYC Code and the cases about EXACTLY this scenario: Full pay and benefits for life, Full pay and benefits for the widow.

This is why the country is going broke.... This was NOT a rural, volunteer fire Dept. with limited resources.

GML 207-c provides for continuation of first party benefits, i.e., payment of salary, wages, medical and hospital expenses of policemen with injuries or illness incurred in the performance of their duties. The statute was originally passed in 1961. This statute provides for the payment of full salary to police and other municipal workers injured in the performance of their duties. The statute has been amended from time to time to add classes of employees in addition to fire and police officers, the Legislature each time pointing to the important and sometimes strenuous and dangerous risks other employees take in doing their duties. In a trio of Article 78 appeals reaching the Court of Appeals, the municipalities urged that a heightened risk standard should be used to determine eligibility for such payment which often lead to permanent disability payments. The court rejects such a standard since it is not contained in the original statute or in any successive amendments pointing to the fact that municipalities have always awarded 207-a benefits to firefighters irrespective of whether the injury causing activity was one entailing the "heightened risk" of firefighters. In each of the three cases, the various Appellate Divisions applied a heightened risk standard and upheld the municipalities denial of 207-c benefits and all were reversed citing the legislative history and express will of the Legislature which does not restrict eligibility on that criteria.

I gave you a direct answer already.  I'll elaborate a little.

There was rubble, debris, burning toxic crud, and crap in the canyons of the city streets as opposed to the relatively open areas at the Pentagon and Pennsylvania.  Many, many, more people were trapped in the cloud for hours and days at a time, plus the duration of the cleanup in the city.  In a sudden emergency, or in this case a major disaster with totally unexpected confusion and communication problems, some people pitch in asap to help without saying "Wait right there.  Don't go anywhere.  I'm going to run over to the supply cabinet and get a mask.  And industrial strength gloves.  And protective overalls.  And eye protection.  And a hard hat.  I'll be right back."  It stands to reason that there would be respiratory problems after breathing that junk, even if it was for only a minute or two.  How much dirt and building material dust can a pair of lungs handle?  It was an attack against the entire country, not against NYC.

Your second question... "Did they not have the training necessary to do their jobs?"  You answered "Yes."     Correct.  They did not have the training necessary to do their jobs.  How would anyone have the imagination be able to plan for that magnitude of devastation on that day?  It wasn't a hurricane, blizzard, or earthquake.  Something like that had never happened before.  It wasn't considered a war zone on 9/10.  Civilians aren't trained in disaster preparation.  Most haven't a clue where the emergency stairs and exits are located, let alone how to react on that day.  How could anyone "train" for that?  The SOP book would be impossible to conceive.  Even with a knee jerk reaction, piss to put out the fire, I doubt that there's an SOP available today.

As to names from the other sites... you call them "non-existent", rather than just asking for names.  That made me think of tommy [sic].  I don't know of any names.  NYC was a very different type catastrophe in a dissimilar place.  It's possible there aren't any.  Maybe there should be.  Maybe not.

It's conceivable that the Pentagon had better preparation, drills, and equipment due to its personnel and its purpose on the planet.  In PA, it was an open field.  Responders already knew it was a crashed plane.  There weren't imploding, collapsing, humongous buildings with thousands of civilians possibly injured or trapped.  Emergency response had a little more time to recognize what hazards could be expected.  Planes have crashed before.  Crap happens.  That area could have been closed off to unequipped personnel.

The country was attacked.  It's that simple.

It wasn't an attack aimed at NYC residents - in addition to the Pentagon and the crash in Pennsylvania - it the USA that was attacked.  Our entire nation was targeted and affected regardless of the specific locations.

Actually You are very wrong. Guiliani ran on two tickets when elected... Republican and Liberal parties... The conservative party candidate as well as the democrat went down in flames.

Guiliani Represented the City of New York, not the Federal Government. Anything he said is for and about New York City.

Just how does any liability New York City may or may not have translate into the responsibility for someone from Maine, Utah or North Dakota ?

It is a direct question... How about a direct answer...

The firefighters and police in NYC are pissed at Republicans no matter

"I say to those who are trying to help us, thank you.
And to those trying to block it I say, get out of the way" - Spokesman
for the First Responders

talking to, what it's about, who it's for, or why there's a need.
That's why they're called the Stupid Party.
