RE: -- SPAM --{PatriotVille} Fwd: Extending the Payroll Tax Cut

The only message from a Republican that actually explains a position on this news-dominant issue.  I don’t understand why Republicans are so poor at communicating with the public.

BTW: Merry Christmas!

Extending the Payroll Tax Cut

Over the last few weeks, Congress has been trying to work out a way to extend the federal payroll tax cut, and I wanted to give you an update on this important issue.

In today’s turbulent economy, the last thing the federal government should do is increase taxes on Americans. Yet, the payroll tax rate for employees is scheduled to increase to 6.2 percent from its current rate of 4.2 percent. That is why Republicans and Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives came together to pass H.R. 3630, the Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act. This legislation would extend the payroll tax cut for both employees and businesses. H.R. 3630 also contained spending cuts to prevent increases to the federal deficit and avoids additional shortfalls to Medicare and Social Security.

Despite this bipartisan effort, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid refused to adopt common sense spending cuts and instead amended H.R. 3630 to only extend the tax cut for two months.  In response, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to send H.R. 3630 to a Conference Committee, where each Chamber will choose Members to work together in a bipartisan fashion to merge the House and Senate versions of H.R. 3630 into a final bill.

I voted in support of sending H.R. 3630 to Conference because I believe Congress should work together to resolve the differences within H.R. 3630 before the end of 2012, so we can extend the payroll tax cut for an entire year, not pass a short term delay so that Members of Congress can begin their Christmas vacations.  Since our nation was founded, when both Chambers disagree on certain pieces of legislation, they have been able to rectify the difference through a Conference Committee.  Just because the timing is inopportune for some Members doesn’t mean we have an excuse to ignore the Rules of Congress.

There is overwhelming bipartisan support for extending the payroll tax cut for an entire year. In fact, President Obama stated, “It would be inexcusable for Congress not to further extend this middle-class tax cut for the rest of the year,” and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi echoed those comments saying, “House Democrats will return to Washington to take up this legislation without delay, and we will keep up the fight to extend these provisions for a full year.”  Despite this bipartisan support, Majority Leader Reid refuses to negotiate with the U.S. House of Representatives in a Conference Committee.

Please know I fully intend to actively work to accomplish our work in Congress before the year’s end. You can also be assured that I will only support legislation that does not create more volatility in our economy.  Rather, I will support legislation that will provide certainty for the American people and in the marketplace, and enables the private sector to create jobs in America.

Republican Security Advisers Tied to $40 Billion in Contracts

Republican Security Advisers Tied to $40 Billion in Contracts
By Roxana Tiron - Dec 23, 2011 12:01 AM ET

National security advisers to the Republican presidential candidates have ties to defense, homeland security and energy companies that have received at least $40 billion in federal contracts since 2008.

Five of former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney's 41 national security and foreign policy advisers have links to companies that last year alone received at least $7.9 billion in federal contracts, according to data compiled by Bloomberg Government analyst Christopher Flavelle. Of that, $7.3 billion came from the Department of Defense.

Romney and former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia, who are leading in the polls, have advisers who sit on the board of directors of BAE Systems Inc., which has received at least $37 billion in U.S. government contracts since 2008, the most of any of the companies with ties to Republican national security advisers.

William Schneider, an adviser to Gingrich, and Michael Chertoff, who counsels Romney, serve on the board of the U.S. subsidiary of BAE Systems Plc, Europe's largest defense contractor. The American company makes the Army's Bradley Fighting Vehicle and provides information technology systems to American intelligence agencies and repair services to the U.S. Navy.

Missile Maker

Schneider, a former State Department undersecretary for security assistance, science and technology under President Ronald Reagan, is head of International Planning Services Inc., a consulting firm based in Arlington, Virginia.

He also serves on the board of MBDA Inc., the U.S. subsidiary of Europe's largest missile maker. MBDA, which has at least $12 million in U.S. contracts, according to the Bloomberg data, is owned by BAE Systems Plc, Paris and Munich-based European Aeronautic, Defence and Space Co. (EAD) (EADS) and Italy's Finmeccanica SpA. (FINMY)

Schneider also serves on the board of Falls Church, Virginia-based Defense Group Inc., whose focus includes research and development in intelligence and cybersecurity. Defense Group has received about $208 million in contracts since 2008 from agencies that include the Defense and Homeland Security departments and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, according to data reviewed by Bloomberg. In 2010, the company had $82.2 million in federal contracts, according to the data.

Gingrich has called for securing U.S. borders to "prevent terrorist organizations from sneaking agents and weapons" into the country. During a national security debate on Nov. 22, he said the U.S. must strengthen the tools to detect and deter threats because "all of us will be in danger for the rest of our lives."

A Bigger Toolbox

As a presidential candidate, "you want a competition of information," Gingrich said in Manchester, New Hampshire, on Dec. 21. "I want a wide range of advice from a wide range of people."

Schneider didn't respond to an e-mail requesting comment.

The BAE Systems board is comprised of "some of the most experienced national security experts" who have advised "presidents, secretaries of defense and other prominent national security officials for both Republican and Democratic administrations, as well as members of Congress," said Brian Roehrkasse, a BAE spokesman, in an e-mailed statement. "All of our board members adhere to conflict of interest agreements."

It is not uncommon for candidates to recruit advisers with ties to the defense industry, said Steve Ellis, vice president of Taxpayers for Common Sense, a Washington-based organization that tracks government spending.

More Voices Needed

"These are the people who have knowledge of the industry, but those can't be the only voices in the room," Ellis said in a telephone interview. "The candidates have to get a diversity of views from other areas if they want to have a responsible national security policy."

The Romney advisers with ties to military contractors include Chertoff, a former Homeland Security secretary; former National Security Agency Director Michael Hayden; former CIA and State Department Counterterrorism Director Cofer Black; former Undersecretary of Defense Dov Zakheim; and former Assistant Secretary of Defense Mary Beth Long.

In addition to BAE Systems, those former government officials are linked to companies that include Alion Science & Technology Corp. and Blackbird Technologies Inc.

Romney has called for boosting shipbuilding and missile defense and a strategy to defend against cyber attacks, terrorism and espionage.

Romney Shipbuilding Initiative

He has said that, as president, he would announce an initiative to increase the shipbuilding rate to 15 a year, up from the current nine ships annually. The Navy paid $3.2 billion in contracts last year to companies now associated with Romney advisers. Those companies include BAE and Alion, according to the Bloomberg Government analysis.

At least six companies that are tied to advisers to Romney's campaign provide cybersecurity services to the federal government, the data shows. They include BAE, InfoZen Inc., and security-clearance company KeyPoint Government Solutions Inc., all of which count Chertoff as a board member; Motorola Solutions Inc. and Alion, whose boards include Hayden; and Blackbird, where Black is a vice president.

Romney advisers also have business ties to each other. Hayden is a principal at Chertoff's consulting company, the Chertoff Group, which in turn is a client of Metis Solutions, owned by Mary Beth Long, another Romney adviser. Another client of Metis, according to the company's website, is Alion, on whose board Hayden sits.

Final Decisions

Andrea Saul, a Romney spokeswoman, said in a statement to Bloomberg Government that the final defense policy decisions rest with Romney.

"Mitt Romney has assembled a diverse group of highly respected foreign policy thinkers. He fields their opinions, evaluates them and ultimately makes his own decisions on policy," she said.

Gingrich has called for the implementation of an energy plan "to reduce the world's dependence on oil from dangerous and unstable countries, especially in the Middle East," according to his campaign website.

R. James Woolsey, the former CIA director who serves as an adviser to Gingrich, is a venture partner at Lux Capital, an investment firm focused on emerging technologies, including energy. Woolsey also leads the strategic advisory group of Paladin Capital Group, a private equity fund in Washington with a portfolio that includes alternative energy and cyber security. Woolsey serves as the chairman of his own firm Woolsey Partners LLC.

Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry has several informal foreign policy and national security advisers with ties to oil companies. John Bolton, a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, is on the board of Diamond Offshore Drilling, Inc. (DO), a Houston-based deep-water drilling contractor. Another adviser to Texas Governor Perry, Zalmay Khalilzad, a former U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan and Iraq, is a director on the board of United Arab Emirates-based Rak Petroleum.

Ron Paul: Propagandist or Prophet?

"Yet again, it becomes evidence that Ron Paul's sin is that he is too willing to be honest with the American people and speak the truth about U.S. foreign policy. Just as Dr. Paul predicted and warned about the housing bubble and financial crisis of 2008, so did he predict and warn prior to 9/11 that U.S. foreign policy would result in what the intelligence community terms "blowback". Ron Paul has a long record of speaking truth to power and making predictions that have come to pass."

Ron Paul: Propagandist or Prophet?
by Jeremy R. Hammond
December 24, 2011

Ron Paul is "the best-known American propagandist for our enemies", writes Dorothy Rabinowitz in a recent Wall Street Journal hit piece. To support the charge, she writes that Dr. Paul "assures audiences" that the terrorist attacks of 9/11 "took place only because of U.S. aggression and military actions". It's "True," she writes, that "we've heard the assertions before", but only "rarely have we heard in any American political figure such exclusive concern for, and appreciation of, the motives of those who attacked us"and, she adds, he doesn't care about the victims of the attacks.

The vindictive rhetoric aside, what is it, exactly, that Ron Paul is guilty of here? It is completely uncontroversial that the 9/11 attacks were a consequence of U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East. The 9/11 Commission Report, for instance, points out that Osama bin Laden "stresses grievances against the United States widely shared in the Muslim world. He inveighed against the presence of U.S. troops in Saudi Arabia, the home of Islam's holiest sites. He spoke of the suffering of the Iraqi people as a result of sanctions imposed after the Gulf War, and he protested U.S. support of Israel."

Notice that Rabinowitz doesn't actually deny that the 9/11 attacks were motivated by such U.S. policies as these. Rather, Ron Paul's sin is that he actually acknowledges this truth. The fact that other political figures choose to ignore or deny this fact hardly reflects poorly on Dr. Paul. Refusing to bury one's head deeply up one's arse, as Rabinowitz is so obviously willing to do, is hardly a character trait to be faulted.

From this position of willful ignorance, Rabinowitz then implores her readers that "a President Paul" would "be making decisions about the nation's defense, national security, domestic policy and much else." The conclusion one is supposed to draw is that anyone who could actually acknowledge the ugly truth that 9/11 was a consequence of U.S. foreign policy isn't fit for office; only someone who is willing to delude him or herself that the U.S. was attacked because "they hate our freedoms" is worthy of the presidency. Anyone who wishes to change U.S. foreign policy is unfit; only a person who is willing to continue the status quo should be allowed a seat in the Oval Office.

Rabinowitz warns that "The world may not be ready for another American president traversing half the globe to apologize for the misdeeds of the nation he had just been elected to lead." It's not clear who she has in mind with the "another", but it's by now a familiar refrain. "I'll never apologize for the United States of America. Ever. I don't care what the facts are," President George H. W. Bush declared to the world after a U.S. warship had shot down an Iranian civilian airliner in Iranian airspace, killing all 290 passengers aboard, including 65 children. Surely, any president willing to apologize for the murder of innocent children must not lead the nation. The horror of the thought!

And then there is Dr. Paul's position with respect to Iran. He recently urged his host in an interview "to understand that Iran's leader, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, had never mentioned any intention of wiping Israel off the map." Here, again, it's notable that Rabinowitz doesn't actually dispute this. Dr. Paul is, of course, correct. The claim that Iran has threatened to acquire nuclear weapons to "wipe Israel off the map" is a complete fabrication of Western media propaganda, and mainstream corporate news agencies know it is a fabrication, but repeat it obligatorily anyway.

Rabinowitz presumably does, as well, so instead of challenging Dr. Paul on the facts, she quotes him saying "They're just defending themselves" and writing, "Presumably he was referring to Iran's wishes for a bomb." In the interview referred to, Dr. Paul had said, "I don't want them to get the nuclear weapon", but pointed out that Israel's defense minister, "Ehud Barak said that they're acting logically, and they're acting in their self-interest, and if he was an Iranian, he would probably think the same way" (Dr. Paul is correct on this, also; it's true that Barak has "quipped that if he were an Iranian, he would take part in the development of nuclear weapons").

Rabinowitz also disinclines herself to point out what Dr. Paul said next: "But there is a gross distortion to this debate that they are on the verge of a nuclear weapon. There is no evidence that they are on the verge of a nuclear weapon, and we shouldn't be ready to start another war" (Dr. Paul is correct on this, too, and has rightly drawn parallels to the current propaganda about Iran and the lies that preceded the war on Iraq).

So, once again, we see that Ron Paul's true sin is his failure to jump on board with the war propaganda. A further sin is that he said after 9/11 that "there was 'glee in the administration because now we can invade Iraq.'" But is the contention that those policymakers responsible for the war on Iraq were not happy that they now had the opportunity to do so sustainable? Is Rabinowitz unaware that in 1996, Richard Perle, Douglas Feith, and David Wurmser coauthored a document prepared for the government of Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel, which made the case for overthrowing Saddam Hussein's regime? Or that the Project for a New American Century (PNAC), whose membership was a virtual who's who of so-called "neoconservatives" calling for war on Iraq, had a manifesto calling for regime change and stating that the "process of transformation" of the U.S. military into a force to "preserve American military preeminence" around the globe "is likely to be a long one, absent some catastrophic and catalyzing eventlike a new Pearl Harbor"? That PNAC director Robert Kagan acknowledged that the 9/11 attacks were the "Pearl Harbor" he and his ilk were looking for, writing in the Washington Post that 9/11 must be used to "to launch a new era of American internationalism. Let's not squander this opportunity"?

Yet again, it becomes evidence that Ron Paul's sin is that he is too willing to be honest with the American people and speak the truth about U.S. foreign policy. Just as Dr. Paul predicted and warned about the housing bubble and financial crisis of 2008, so did he predict and warn prior to 9/11 that U.S. foreign policy would result in what the intelligence community terms "blowback". Ron Paul has a long record of speaking truth to power and making predictions that have come to pass.

Rabinowitz concludes, "It seemed improbable that the best-known of American propagandists for our enemies could be near the top of the pack in the Iowa contest, but there it is." That Ron Paul has emerged in Iowa as a frontrunner is a hopeful sign that Americans are waking up to the realities of U.S. foreign policy and are tired of crude propagandists for U.S. wars and empire insulting their intelligence, as Rabinowitzwho is a member of the Wall Street Journal's editorial boarddoes so well in her column.

**JP** Letter to Editor - Imran and Musharraf

Dear Join Pakistan

LETTER TO EDITOR

24 December 2011

Imran and Musharraf

Imran and Musharraf are both promising to ameliorate the lot of the common man if returned to power. Both seem to have honest intentions in this regard. Both also seem to have some following though Imran’s tsunami is gaining momentum day by day. This trend must be giving many a sleepless night to the major political parties’ leaders who would be devising all kinds of strategies – fair and foul - to combat the situation. Unfortunately, they are capable of doing so through their genuine as well as captive and coerced voters. If the PTI and Musharraf’s APML also field their individual candidates contesting against each other in a same constituency it would split their votes to the advantage of the other political party(ies). The PTI and the APML are also not likely to get some clear or coalitional majority by going for some mutual seat adjustments either as again it will divided the number of seats that each party will get.  As right now Imran looks to be in a better position, I would suggest that Musharraf steps down and not take part in the elections – not as a measure of boycotting them - but by announcing its support for the PTI that has the same aims and objectives as those of the APML.  The aim is to better the lot of people and not to be in power. This noble aim can also be served by remaining out of the power. The APML workers and voters should, therefore, be asked to work and vote for the PTI to ensure its success with a solid majority.  It will thus achieve Musharraf’s aim of good governance also and at the same time the country would get rid of the professional luteras and plunderers.

That’s the only way to get a government that would improve the wretched lot of the common man.

Re: How Did We Get Here? Or, Why Do 20 Year Old Newsletters Matter So Damn Much?

Lou Rockwell and Murray Rothbard (One of PlainOl's close associates)  are crackpot extraordinaires:

"You forgot the part where Murray Rothbard first saw the future of libertarianism in alliance with the New Left and, among other positions, cheered the fall of South Vietnam because it was the end of a state--as if anarchy had replaced the regime. His paleocon turn was just another version of his tactical Leninism. (During the Reagan era, Rothbard was still a leftist.) "

U.S. most armed country with 90 guns per 100 people

By Laura MacInnis

GENEVA | Tue Aug 28, 2007 1:57pm EDT

(Reuters) - The United States has 90 guns for every 100 citizens, making it the most heavily armed society in the world, a report released on Tuesday said.

U.S. citizens own 270 million of the world's 875 million known firearms, according to the Small Arms Survey 2007 by the Geneva-based Graduate Institute of International Studies.

About 4.5 million of the 8 million new guns manufactured worldwide each year are purchased in the United States, it said.

"There is roughly one firearm for every seven people worldwide. Without the United States, though, this drops to about one firearm per 10 people," it said.

India had the world's second-largest civilian gun arsenal, with an estimated 46 million firearms outside law enforcement and the military, though this represented just four guns per 100 people there. China, ranked third with 40 million privately held guns, had 3 firearms per 100 people.

Germany, France, Pakistan, Mexico, Brazil and Russia were next in the ranking of country's overall civilian gun arsenals.

On a per-capita basis, Yemen had the second most heavily armed citizenry behind the United States, with 61 guns per 100 people, followed by Finland with 56, Switzerland with 46, Iraq with 39 and Serbia with 38.

France, Canada, Sweden, Austria and Germany were next, each with about 30 guns per 100 people, while many poorer countries often associated with violence ranked much lower. Nigeria, for instance, had just one gun per 100 people.

"Firearms are very unevenly distributed around the world. The image we have of certain regions such as Africa or Latin America being awash with weapons -- these images are certainly misleading," Small Arms Survey director Keith Krause said.

"Weapons ownership may be correlated with rising levels of wealth, and that means we need to think about future demand in parts of the world where economic growth is giving people larger disposable income," he told a Geneva news conference.

The report, which relied on government data, surveys and media reports to estimate the size of world arsenals, estimated there were 650 million civilian firearms worldwide, and 225 million held by law enforcement and military forces.

Five years ago, the Small Arms Survey had estimated there were a total of just 640 million firearms globally.

"Civilian holdings of weapons worldwide are much larger than we previously believed," Krause said, attributing the increase largely to better research and more data on weapon distribution networks.

Only about 12 percent of civilian weapons are thought to be registered with authorities.

Re: SOPA

Good Morning From Tampa Bear!

I am guilty of downloading music from Napster and then from a site called Win-Mix back seven or eight years ago.

The bottom line, is that it is stealing.   You are stealing a property when you download movies or music, or anything else of value from file sharing sites, that you have not paid for the product.

Fat Boy on the video has been saddled up to a buffet bar once too often, and is full of it.   Sites like Win-Mix,  Napster,  and others were not started by those who are pushing for these file sharing sites to be closed down.   My guess, is that these sites will not be shut down,  but I won't participate iin them, and the two groups and one web site that I do have a little dominion and control over, will not condone nor participate in the illict distribution of proprietary media.

Re: Crazy Uncle Ron And His Skin-Head/Neo Nazi Supporters

Good Morning Constitutional Reset,

I don't know what all that is supposed to mean in your last missive,  you lost me there,  but I do know that Crazy Uncle Ron has broadcast in commercials in Iowa,  false, misleading and prevaricate information against his fellow Republican candidates.  Paul has broken the 11th Commandment,  "Never speak falsely (or badly)  against your fellow conservatives".

Moreover,  Crazy Uncle Ron is naive when it comes to foreign policy.....This is not just a "Neo-Con"  belief, it is a conservative belief.

As we have pointed out,   now that Crazy Uncle Ron is getting the media attention that his cult like followers so desired,  they are pissed when the spotlight is really shown on Crazy Uncle Ron's past record.

Tough.    If the shoe fits.......Wear it......

How so?  Who has the burden of carrying the charge and to what degree
of evidence?

Regarding accusations of 'isolationism' or 'racism' against Ron Paul:
1) For all those who would see Ron Paul stoned for any cause on motive
that Ron Paul is clearly neither neo-con nor neo-liberal I ask you to
take care for your soul's sake.
Both neo-cons and neo-liberals are statists who raise big government
as an idol to replace a big God they feel has abandoned and abused
them.

2) Those that have no problem with 'bearing false witness against
their neighbor', being children of the lie, have no problem playing
the role of the 'accuser' by hyperbole raised far beyond all
reasonable extrapolations of evidence that could reach
2.1)  the probable cause criteria
2.2)  and certainly very far from the wrongful intent that must be
proved so as to meet the beyond a reasonable doubt criteria
2.3)  were the evidence given hyperbolic extension is so ancient that
any civil or criminal misdemeanor complaints that could arise from
that evidence is decrepitly ancient  - so far beyond the time limits
established by statute that evidence witnessed is legally false at
least to the point of being inadmissible witness in justification for
ANY cause of action.

3) I will grant that blessing any candidate with your vote is a civil
issue –
but when an accusation upon Ron Paul is made to forestall that purpose
- and that accusation that goes so far as to impune malum per se
intent on a Ron Paul action which could only be misdemeanor at worst
and constructive good at best - the criteria for judgement in
assigning guilt MUST shift to both the  felonious  criteria and the
malum per se criteria of 'beyond a reasonable doubt'  - else by
slander (false witness) a person may make themself accomplice with
evidenced criminal intent much as Saul did with respect to the
martyring of St. Stephen and friends.

Men should never wear Christmas sweaters…

New post on Fellowship of the Minds

Men should never wear Christmas sweaters…

by DCG

No explanation needed!

Maybe he's trying to distract you from the beard...

Did he look in the mirror before he left the house?

Standing next to another dude in a Christmas sweater doesn't help...

And the earrings don't make it any prettier either.

Just wrong...

[W-H] Dear Abby

---------

Dear Abby,

My husband has a long record of money problems. He runs up huge credit-card bills and at the end of the month, if I try to pay them off, he shouts
at me, saying I am stealing his money.

He says pay the minimum and lets our kids worry about the rest, but already we can hardly keep up with the interest. Also he has been so arrogant
and abusive toward our neighbors that most of them no longer speak to us. The few that do are an odd bunch, to whom he has been giving a lot of expensive
gifts, running up our bills even more.

Also, he has gotten religious. One week he hangs out with Catholics and the next with people who say the Pope is the Anti-Christ, and the next he's
with Muslims. Finally, the last straw. He's demanding that before anyone can be in the same room with him, they must sign a loyalty oath. It's just so horribly
creepy! Can you help?

Signed,
Lost in DC

Dear Lost:

Stop whining, Michelle. You're getting to live in the White House for free, travel the world, and have others pay for everything for you. You can divorce the
jerk any time you want. The rest of us are stuck with him for thirteen more months!

Signed,
Abby
