tea party demographics

The Not-So-White Tea Party

USA Today is out with a new poll on Tea Party supporters. Near the top of both the article and the accompanying graphic is this point, also singled out by Howard Kurtz in his Washington Post report on the study:

They are overwhelmingly white and Anglo,

Not too surprising, perhaps. Economic conservatives, we hear, are more white than the national average. But wait — here's the rest of Kurtz's sentence:

although a scattering of Hispanics, Asian Americans and African Americans combine to make up almost one-fourth of their ranks.

"Almost one-fourth of their ranks" is "a scattering"? Sounds like a pretty good chunk to me, especially in a country that is after still mostly white. Let's go to the tape. The data-filled graphic says that 77 percent of Tea Party supporters are "non-Hispanic whites." And this 2008 Census report says that the United States as a whole is 65 percent non-Hispanic white. So the Tea Party is indeed somewhat more "white" than the country at large, but not by that much. Twelve points above the national average is not "overwhelmingly white," and 23 percent Hispanics, Asian Americans and African Americans is not "a scattering." At a rough estimate, it represents about 14 million non-Anglo Americans who support the Tea Party movement.

How does this compare to the demographics of other movements? Strangely enough, I can't find any real data on the demographics of the enviromental movement. Maybe pollsters and mainstream journalists don't want to know. But here's a report that 84 percent of the visitors to the Sierra Club website are Caucasian. Similar implication here. And here's a story on the environmentalist movement's desperate attempt to seem not so "overwhelmingly white." Yet somehow journalists don't focus on that obvious fact about the environmentalist movement.

Instead, they keep describing the Tea Party movement as "overwhelmingly white," even when the data suggest a different conclusion.

**JP** Aptani Women

Please wait images are loading.....

Women of the Apatani Tribe, in India's Apatani plateau, are famous for the bizarre nose plugs they've been wearing since times long passed.

The Apatani, or Tani, are a tribal group of about 60,000 members, often praised for their extremely efficient agriculture, performed without animals or machinery. They have no written record of their history, and traditions are passed down orally, from generation to generation.

One tradition that is quickly fading into the mist of time is the traditional Apatani nose plugs, worn by most of the elder women in the tribe. There was once a time when every woman had to wear these bizarre accessories, but since the middle of the 20th century, the custom began to die. According to the Apatani, the nose plug was born as a way of protecting the women of the tribe. Apparently, Apatani women have always been considered the most beautiful among the Arunachal tribes, their villages were constantly raided by neighboring tribes, and the women kidnapped.

To make themselves unattractive to the other tribes, Apatani women began wearing these hideous nose plugs and tattooing their faces with a horizontal line from the forehead to the tip of the nose, and five lines on their chins. Let's face it, that turns off any raider in search of beautiful women to have his way with.

But the tradition of the Apatani nose plug hasn't been practiced by any woman born after 1970, and as time passes, this custom will probably soon be forgotten. Well, at least we still have the Ethiopian lip plug.

**JP** The moral imperative to end an IMMORAL WAR!!!

The invasion is finally seeing the ground relaties, a defeat!!!! They have butchered afghans, and their own soldiers are seeing an ever increasing number of graves, and the frustration in the world is growing against this immoral world, as the article says...its time to pack back home and give indians the reality check (as they have been riding the invading soldier's necks and playing their dirty games in Afghanistan against Pakistan)... Following are some of very interesting articles on the topic...

Re: BREWER WARNS OF IMMIGRANTS AND 'BEHEADINGS'

Just because we have not heard of "beheadings" on the news doesn't mean it hasn't happened.  We have heard of murders of documented Americans - men, women and children - by illegal aliens.

If you google "mexican beheading," you will find many incidents of police, politicians, and citizens in the way being decapitated by drug cartels down there.  I wouldn't be surprised to learn it has happened within our borders too.  Either way, there's not much difference between decapitated, dismembered, and just plain murdered with a bullet or stabbing.  The result is exactly the same with fewer body parts.  Ask the family of "Documented American" Robert Krentz, a crippled man murdered on his legally owned and documented property which has been taken over by drug and human, gun toting, murderous illegal alien, smugglers!

We know that documented American jails and prisons have tens of thousands illegal alien criminals being housed, fed, clothed, and medically cared for.  The same illegals who have been legally deported and illegally returned to deliberately commit additional violent crimes.  Those illegal aliens were tried in documented American courts, legally sentenced by documented American judges, after legal convictions by documented American juries, prosecuted by documented American attorneys, and defended by documented American attorneys provided to the illegal aliens at no charge.  Illegal aliens show their respect for America and our laws by illegally entering again and again, committing more murder and mayhem against our documented Americans and documented legal residents.

How many documented Americans have to be beheaded, shot, stabbed, maimed, raped, robbed, etc. by illegal alien violent repeat criminals before the borders are sealed and America is protected?

It's a drug war.  It's a human smuggling war.  It's a protect America war.  It's a protect Americans war.  What part of W A R don't some people understand?  What part of I L L E G A L don't people understand?

Subject: BREWER WARNS OF IMMIGRANTS AND 'BEHEADINGS'

BREWER WARNS OF IMMIGRANTS AND 'BEHEADINGS'....
Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R) continues to try to defend her anti-
immigrant
policies, and isn't above _using shameless demagoguery_
(http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/07/
brewer_claims_illeg...
_the.php)  to scare people into  agreeing with her.
In an interview on Fox News last week, for example, she claimed: "We
cannot
afford all this illegal immigration and everything that comes with
it,
everything from the crime and to the drugs and the kidnappings and the

extortion and the beheadings ..."
There's no better way, it seems, to make the case for strict
anti-immigration laws than to claim that undocumented immigrants are
pouring  into the
country to decapitate innocent Americans. But just because she says
 it on
television doesn't make it true.
Brewer didn't just slip up; she seems to seriously believe immigrants

who've entered the U.S. illegally are engaged in "beheadings." Offered
a chance
to walk it back on a local public affairs show this week, Brewer
insisted
that  there have been "bodies in the desert ... that have been
beheaded."
When told  that media research could find no such incidents, the
governor
didn't  care.
Eventually, a spokesperson for Brewer said that the Arizona governor
_may
not have been referring to incidents in Arizona_
(http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/07/
brewer_claims_illeg...
) ,  but could have meant illegal immigrants beheading people in other
states.
First, Brewer was clearly talking about Arizona. Second, there aren't

reports of beheading in other border states, either. Third, this is
probably the
most unpersuasive spin I've heard since the RNC spokesperson _tried
to

Yet Again with the National ID

Yet Again with the National ID
by Becky Akers
July/August 2010 • Volume: 60 • Issue: 6 •

Fresh from their defeat in forcing national identity papers on us with REAL ID, the feds are trying once more. Their plea this time isn't terrorism but immigrationthough they're pretty much the same, according to the State.

Introduced in 2005 to combat the waves of terrorists thronging our shores, REAL ID was supposed to thwart the bad guys by transforming our drivers' licenses into a national ID card. We'd have submitted this card on demand to government's agentsas do the victims in totalitarian regimes. Never mind that "almost no empirical research has been undertaken to clearly establish how identity tokens can be used as a means of preventing terrorism," according to Privacy International, or that "terrorists have traditionally moved across borders using tourist visas," unless they "are equipped with legitimate identification cards." The 9/11 hijackers and the Madrid bombers, respectively, provide two recent examples.

Any Pretext Whatsoever

Governments itch to tag their subjects like so many cattle, on any pretext whatsoever. Ours thought it had a dandy excuse in the attacks of 9/11, and who can blame it? Many Americans would eagerly sell their few remaining liberties so long as a politician assured them that said sale secured the homeland. Ergo, the feds invented a bogus link between terrorism and America's freedom from a national ID. They swore they'd prevent another 9/11 so long as we followed orders to carry "enhanced" drivers' licenses.

Surprisingly, rebellion bloomedand this among states that have supinely obeyed any number of anti-constitutional decrees since 1865. Fifteen passed legislation prohibiting their DMVs from turning licenses into a de facto national ID; another ten officially denounced REAL ID.

No matter: The feds slapped an alias on their failed legislationPASS IDand reintroduced it. But in case such cosmetics can't con us, a couple of senators are aiming at the same goal via another American bugaboo: immigration.

Increased Workplace Patrols

Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-SC) and Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) propose to "reform" yet again the feds' cruel and unconstitutional policies on immigration. Their national ID card piggybacks on Social Security cards rather than drivers' licenses.

"The plan calls for a big increase in immigration agents patrolling workplaces," the New York Times reported. The Bush administration already tried such raids; their inhumanity devastated whole towns, not just immigrants, and Obama's government supposedly discontinued them. But senators seldom boast an enviable learning curve. Graham and Schumer would also "require all workers, including legal immigrants and American citizens, to present a tamper-proof"that is, biometric"Social Security card when they apply for jobs."

In propaganda the Washington Post obligingly published, the senators wrote, "A tamper-proof ID system would dramatically decrease illegal immigration, experts have said, and would reduce the government revenue lost when employers and workers here illegally fail to pay taxes." But, "there's no such thing as a foolproof ID system," as experts have also said. And "reducing lost government revenue" as a reason for national ID adds insult to injury. We should pack papers so the government can keep more of what it loots from us?

The senators also promise that though "we would require all U.S. citizens and legal immigrants who want jobs to obtain a high-tech, fraud-proof Social Security card," we're safe from bureaucratic prying because "no government database would house everyone's information." If you believe that, you no doubt believe as well that these politicians have only our best interests at heart, have studied rather than exploited this topic, and are competent to decide for us who our future neighbors, friends, and relatives will be.

Certainly, Graham and Schumer don't have immigrants' best interests at heart. Indeed, whether immigrants can live here is determined solely by whether we can use them to "ensur[e] America's future economic prosperity." Ergo, the senators' "legislation would award green cards to immigrants who receive a Ph.D. or master's degree in science, technology, engineering or math from a U.S. university. It makes no sense to educate the world's future inventors and entrepreneurs and then force them to leave when they are able to contribute to our economy."

Nationalist Agenda

Forget about those hungry, tired, and poor yearning to breathe free; the persecuted; and the tortured. If you can't advance politicians' nationalistic agendas, you won't find a toe-hold here.

The senators aren't content to menace only immigrants; they also threaten and penalize Americans who, unlike themselves, are productive: "Prospective employers would be responsible for swiping the [national ID] cards through a machine"and who pays for the gizmo? -- "to confirm a person's identity and immigration status. Employers who refused to swipe the card or who otherwise knowingly hired unauthorized workers would face stiff fines and, for repeat offenses, prison sentences."

Our rulers have spent the last 150 years ginning up fear of immigrants, pitting established Americans against newcomers, contriving a hobgoblin from which they squawk about rescuing us. They've succeeded so well that modern Americans happily don chains so long as it means immigrants wear them, too. National ID, raids on offices and factories, a wall on our southern border: Nothing is too dictatorial when it comes to controlling migration.

Schumer and Graham are betting Americans' fear of immigrants outweighs their love of liberty. Tragically, that looks like a winning wager.

The decapitated bodies of 12 men were discovered early Sunday
scattered in and around a state capital in southern Mexico. Nine of
the corpses were strewn along a busy street, where the Guerrero state
governor later appeared for a religious procession.
The gruesome display comes as drug traffickers and their death squads
fight law enforcement authorities as well as one another for control
of prized routes into the United States.

Extend jobless benefits, and not by trimming stimulus

GLOBE EDITORIAL
Extend jobless benefits, and not by trimming  stimulus
July 3, 2010
THE MEAGER gain in private-sector jobs reported yesterday is further
evidence that the economic recovery is weak, casting a harsh light on
 Congress'
failure to extend unemployment benefits before starting its  Fourth of
July
recess. Actions by Republicans, including Senator Scott  Brown of
Massachusetts, to block the jobless benefits bill have already  cost
1.3 million
long-term unemployed Americans this lifeline. If Congress  fails to
act by the
end of July, an additional 2 million will lose their  unemployment
checks.
Jobless benefits play two critical roles in a struggling economy: They

keep working families fed and in their homes until breadwinners can
get  back
to work, and they generate job-creating economic activity to help
 keep the
economy from spiraling further downward.
When Congress returns, Democrats should demonstrate the priority they
 give
to aiding the jobless by peeling the benefits extension off from a
 package
that also included an infusion of money to state governments. As  much
as
states need the funds to avoid more layoffs and service cuts
 (Massachusetts
has been counting on about $700 million), this provision  particularly
raised the hackles of deficit hawks. The money for the states  is a
fight worth
waging — at another time. Now it is more important to get  the benefit
checks
out.
Senator Brown has said he would vote for extended unemployment
 assistance
if money for it came from unused stimulus funds. But  yesterday's jobs
report proved that the economy needs both aid for the  unemployed and
the ongoing
boost that stimulus projects provide as they  come on line. Just this
week,
Massachusetts received $45.4 million in  stimulus money to expand
broadband
access in the western part of the state  where some towns have
virtually no
high-speed Internet service. Overall,  the 2009 stimulus package
includes
$7.2 billion to upgrade the nation's  data networks — and, at the same
time,
create 5,000 construction jobs.
Clearly, not all stimulus projects were shovel-ready when Congress
 passed
the bill last year, but that is just as well, since the economy  still
needs
the turbo-injection of an initiative like broadband expansion.  Brown
is
justified in his concern that extending jobless benefits will
 increase the
deficit. In the long term, that red ink must be addressed.  But job
one for
Congress when it returns will be to make sure the  unemployed keep
their
benefits — and not at the cost of needed stimulus  spending.

Unemployment: Congress Has Never Before Dropped Extended Benefits With Jobless..

_Unemployment: Congress Has Never Before Dropped  Extended Benefits
With
Jobless Rate So High_
(http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/06/30/unemployment-congress-
has_n_...)

First Posted: 06-30-10 09:54  AM   |   Updated: 06-30-10 10:37 AM

Though the jobs crisis shows few signs of abating and the unemployment
rate
continues to hover near 10 percent, Congress allowed extended
unemployment
benefits to expire at the beginning of June, causing so far more than
1.2
million long-term unemployed to miss checks.
During normal times, state provide 26 weeks of unemployment benefits
for
workers laid off through no fault of their own. Federally-funded
extended
benefits have given the unemployed additional weeks during eight
recessions
since the 1950s. If Congress fails to reauthorize the current round of
extra
jobless aid, it will be the first time since then that extended
benefits
have  been allowed to expire when the national unemployment rate is
above 7.2
percent.
"This is both unfair to the unemployed, who face a historically
difficult
situation through no fault of their own, and economically unwise as it
threatens  the prospect of a strong and sustainable recovery," says a
new report
from the  National Employment Law Project and the Center for American
Progress. "The  consequences are obviously dire for those Americans
out of work,
and could be  equally devastating for employed Americans who are
counting on
a sustained  economic recovery to keep their jobs and boost their
earnings."
The report shows that in previous recessions -- in 1973, for example
--
extended benefits have been left in place until unemployment dropped
to as low
 as 5 percent.
The stimulus bill and subsequent extensions gave the unemployed up to
99
weeks of benefits in some states -- an unprecedented amount of help.
When it
came time to reauthorize the extended benefits in May, conservative
Democrats in  the House and Senate had lost their appetites for
stimulating the
economy with  deficit spending. Despite _authoritative reports_
(http://www.frbsf.org/publications/economics/letter/2010/
el2010-12.html
)  to the  contrary,
many members of Congress suspect the extended benefits _discourage
people
from looking for  work_
(http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/06/10/john-linder-
unemployment_n_6...) .
Both chambers of Congress are currently _scrambling_
(http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/06/29/unemployment-benefits-
bil_n_...)  to pass
standalone  unemployment bills after a broader domestic bill that
included a
reauthorization  of extended benefits stalled in the Senate. If
Congress manages
to reauthorize  the benefits, people who prematurely exhausted will be
paid
retroactively.

Accelerating the recovery

Accelerating the recovery
(http://dailykos.com/hotlist/add/2010/6/18/93532/2050/main//)
by _Jed Lewison_ (http://jed-lewison.dailykos.com/)
Fri Jul 02, 2010 at 08:54:04 AM PDT

Here's an updated look at Pelosi aide Karina Newton's _famous  chart_
(http://www.speaker.gov/blog/?p=2144)  on job growth under President
Bush and the
Republicans  versus President Obama and the Democrats, focusing this
time
exclusively on  private sector jobs:

My point here isn't to say the everything is okay in the economy. It
obviously isn't. Even though we gained 83,000 private sector jobs last
month, _we
lost_ (http://www.dailyko
s.com/storyonly/2010/7/2/881101/-All-in-all:-another-bad-job-report)
over 200,000 overall thanks to the  loss of Census
Bureau employment.
But when Republicans decry the latest jobs report, as they surely
will,
remember that they are decrying the loss of government jobs. And even
though
they love to say that government jobs aren't real jobs, their outrage
over
this  jobs report is their way of admitting they were wrong about
that.
The thing is, it's the Republicans that have blocked Democrats at
 every
stage in our efforts to accelerate this recovery. Ever since Bush left
 office
and the Republicans lost power, things have been heading in the right

direction. But it's true, the recovery needs to move more quickly, and
the
biggest thing slowing us down are the Republicans who are getting in
the way,
blocking Democratic efforts to extend unemployment benefits and
deliver aid
to  states struggling to keep public servants employed.
Democrats can and should take credit for the recovery that we've had
even
while recognizing that it's not enough. We need more of what's gotten
us
this far, not less. And the Republicans are fighting that every step
of the
way.
