I wonder if the last clause in the quote is accurate.  If it is he misspoke.  Your comment is idiotic on multiple levels, but then you are repeating something others have said.  I heard an interview where he said something like that, and what he was saying was that Obama's current fascist level of surveillance under the Patriot Act, where my phone can be tapped and my grandmother or son can be digitally raped at an airport, should be scaled back so that there is only surveillance of people who make multiple trips to Yemen or who attend meetings calling for violence.

First, Rand doesn't say he is a libertarian.  When people like Sean Hannity call him one he says he is a "Constitutional conservative."

Second, given that Rand was the main leader in trying to reduce Patriot Act excesses last week, it is clear that replacing everyone else in the Senate with Rand Paul clones would radically increase liberty.

Third, as noted, what Rand actually said (and certainly meant) was that current government spying and harassment should be restricted from the general population to very small groups defined by actual behavior (no, I don't trust the government to do that well, but restricting them is still better than letting them violate everyone's rights)

PAUL: I'm not for profiling people on the color of their skin, or on their religion, but I would take into account where they've been traveling and perhaps, you might have to indirectly take into account whether or not they've been going to radical political speeches by religious leaders. It wouldn't be that they are Islamic. But if someone is attending speeches from someone who is promoting the violent overthrow of our government, that's really an offense that we should be going after — they should be deported or put in prison.
