Fwd: NEW INITIATIVE: The Spending Reduction Act will actually ELIMINATE programs!

Quote of the Day: "...a wise and frugal Government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government, and this is necessary to close the circle of our felicities." - Thomas Jefferson

The House Republican Study Committee (RSC) has proposed the Spending Reduction Act.

This bill actually targets dozens of programs for elimination or reduction. You can see the list in a pdf format here: http://rsc.jordan.house.gov/UploadedFiles/Spending_Reduction_Act--TWOPAGER.pdf

The cuts would total $2.5 trillion over ten years. Some of that amount could be based on rosy scenarios. It's certainly true that cuts to defense and entitlements must still be made to balance the books, but this bill is still an important first step. It means . . .

* some in Congress are getting serious about downsizing government.
* many wasteful, unnecessary, and unconstitutional programs are being targeted for elimination -- which is good regardless of how much money is saved.

The reason to support this package of cuts is clear. It's concrete and backed by politicians already serving in Congress. But we welcome additional lists of things to cut, from BOTH parties. For now . . .

Please tell Congress to pass the Spending Reduction Act using DownsizeDC.org's Cut Spending campaign.

I support the spending cuts proposed by the Republican Study Committee's Spending Reduction Act.

* It eliminates many unnecessary and unconstitutional programs
* It may save up to $2.5 trillion over ten years
* It will send a message to the American people that Congress is finally serious about cutting the deficit

However, please also understand that Congress must do much more . . .

* Defense and Homeland Security spending should also be targeted for spending cuts; even the Tea Party agrees: http://bit.ly/hLEtdT
* Reform of Social Security and Medicare is needed to save the country from bankruptcy
* I welcome MORE spending cuts in other areas, from both parties

The Spending Reduction Act is a good start. Please support it and hold firm against attempts to dilute it.
