**JP** Windows File Indexing (Speeding First Gear) -- Part 4 (English)

As Salaam o Alaikum,

=> Same email has been sent in Roman Urdu as well, if you don't receive it just send me an email requesting it ok.

This is part 4 of my mail which is related to speeding up your computers. If you didn't receive my previous emails then just send me an email or visit my blog http://omgeureka.blogspot.com (website is still under construction but you can see my previous emails over there) On the blog you can also read the Latest IT related News / Articles / Updates or just add me as a friend in facebook so that you will not miss any of my mails

At your home computer hardly I have seen any1 using windows search feature to find files or any other documents. Because at home PC, there will be music, videos or pictures only which are located at fixed folders and they are not hard to find though. You will use this windows searching feature only at offices because over there you will have junk of files at your pc's desktop, my documents, drives, share drives etc.

And if you are 1 of them who don't use windows search feature on daily bases (which I know you won't) then it's better to disable this service from windows to speedup you operating system. By disabling the service doesn't mean that you then won't be able to search anything. You still can use windows search feature but it will be a slow process (Doesn't matter if you use it once a week or in a month)

Little Know How about File Indexing…..

File indexing is one of the windows service, which is used to speed up the searching of files/folders process. This service is enabled by default at the time when you install your Operating System.  Well this service does saves your time while searching the document but there are negative impacts on the pc performance as well

Like other services, the file indexing service uses a lot of computer memory and processing speed and consumes a space as well in your hard disk. It actually keeps all the key information of your files/folders and make a "SEARCHABLE KEYWORD INDEX" which makes your searching process fast.

But it's a completely useless service incase you don't use it often. And this is a good idea to remove or disable this service as it will make an impact on the system performance and speed while you open your files and folders.

How To…..

If you want to improve your pc performance and want to take control of the indexing service, then here is the way to do it (This is only for WinXp and Win Vista users)

1.  Go to My Computer and you will see your drives like C and D drives.

2.  Right-click on the C: Drive > select Properties

3.  As you can see, I have made a red circle where you will find a TICK mark on the box. Just uncheck the box and click apply

4.  After that another screen will popup like the picture on your right

index2.PNG

5.  Select this option …Apply changes to "C: sub folders and files," and click OK.

6.  After that may be you will find an error on your screen displaying ERROR APPLYING ATTRIBUTES. if it comes, simply click ignore or ignore all and then restart your PC.

By following above steps, you have stopped your windows to do the indexing in your PC. But if you still want to use searching feature, then what you can do is simply put all of your files from desktop, my documents and C drive into the D drive and remove the indexing from C drive and make it enable on D drive. And whenever you want to search any document, just do it on D drive. As C drive have system files so it's better to remove indexing from there. But my advice to all of you is that remove the indexing from all the drives as you won't be using it a lot at home.

Now if you have removed the indexing from all your drives, then it's better to disable it from the windows services sections as well. Because windows loads all of the services either you are using it or not. But if you have enabled it on any 1 drive then don't' follow below steps.

Disabling Indexing Service (In XP) or Windows Search (In Vista)

To completely disable the file indexing service from Windows, please follow below steps:

1.    Go to Start menu and click Run

2.    And Type "services.msc"  and press Enter.

3.    Now scroll down and try to look for "Indexing Service"  or if you are using vista then look for "Windows Search" and double-click it.

4.    If  that service status is "Running" then make it stop by pressing the "Stop" button.

5.    Its better if you select Disable instead of Stop.

Well I think above information is sufficient to understand the complete process of File Indexing This was point no 3 to make you computer fast. Remaining points will be discussed in the next posts 1 by 1
