Obrycki's

Obrycki's has been a blue-crab-eater's destination and Baltimore landmark since 1944, but 2011 will be the final season for the famed restaurant.  Obrycki's is currently closed for the winter, as is usual for them, and they plan to reopen on March 15, 2011 for their final year in business.

In his Roadfood.com review, Michael Stern said Obrycki's is "spectacularly good" and "a Chesapeake Bay classic all adventurous eaters need to try."

Obrycki's also has two airport locations, and they will remain in business.  Here is their statement, from their website:

Dear Friends of Obrycki's,

After being located in Baltimore City for 65 years, and our family being the “new” owners for 35 years, we have decided to pursue other ventures. So next season, 2011, will be our last at our Pratt Street location.

Over the years we have grown considerably, with locations at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport and Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. Currently, we have two additional locations under development and more opportunities on the horizon.

We have deep roots in Baltimore and would never consider closing without notice. We would like to give everyone the opportunity to continue to visit this location for one more season. This announcement is timed to coincide with the holiday season, since Obrycki's gift cards are a popular holiday gift. In consideration of this, we are discontinuing gift card sales.

As the owners of the building, we are discussing potential uses for our location, possibly even a new restaurant which will feature Obrycki’s crabs and crab cakes, among other items.

Thank you for your support over the years. We look forward to seeing you this coming season at Pratt Street, and at our other locations in the future.

The Cernak Family

Because I am at the BWI location so often, I haven't been to the Pratt Street restaurant in years. We will have to make a point of getting there one last time this Summer.

Oh so sad! I remember years ago when we lived in Columbia that we loved this place--we felt lavish and evil when we ate ourselves silly .

I wonder if it has to do with the crime rate in Baltimore city?

It's always sad to see a grand old institution bite the dust. It's interesting that the airport stores will stay open and the family is looking for new locations. I would like to know the story behind the story.

Last time there we took a cab from Inner Harbor - and were quite glad we didn't walk it. There are some rough streets near the downtown Obrycki's. Still, the best crabs I've ever had! It's a four hour drive - and I think we'll be going in 2011!

Great new website design by the way. Very easy to follow and the photos really "pop".

Minority report, I guess. I like going to "institutions," so I'm glad I had a chance to eat at this one, but I remember the food as mediocre, the ambience as somewhat off-putting. Given my 'druthers, I wouldn't have gone back.
