Texas: Officer Accused in Killings at Fort Hood Wins a Delay

Wearing his Army uniform and sitting in a wheelchair, the psychiatrist accused of killing 13 people at Fort Hood appeared in court on Tuesday and won a delay in his case. Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, who was paralyzed after being shot by two Fort Hood police officers, uttered only a soft "Yes, sir" to questions about the proceedings. His lawyers said they needed more time to review documents and because they still lacked other evidence, including the F.B.I. ballistics report and a government report on the Nov. 5 shootings.

Trial Delayed for Fort Hood Shooting Suspect
Army psychiatrist Nidal Hasan, the man accused of the Fort Hood, Texas massacre, made his first appearance in a military court on Tuesday.
Hasan is charged with opening fire last year at the Fort Hood army post, killing 13 people. It is the worst shooting to occur on a U.S. military post.
Hasan, who is now paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair, appeared in court wearing his military uniform. He was wounded in the Fort Hood massacre after military police shot him.
Hasan did not do much talking in court on Tuesday, but answered most questions with a "Yes, sir."
His attorney's won a request to delay his trial until October 4. Prosecutors had objected to the delay and said they would be ready for trial in July.
Military prosecutors have filed notices indicating they plan to seek the death penalty for Hassan. He faces 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder.
Authorities believe Hasan had contact with a radical Islamic cleric in Yemen just weeks before the shooting.
