Advertising on license plates

Money over safety: California's Digital license plate

Posted: 21 Jun 2010 09:37 AM PDT

Talk about putting money over safety!  California just came up with a bill to show advertising on their "new" digital license plates when a vehicle stops.  Well it's only a conceptual thing now but soon through legislation it can become reality. The nanny state is worried about texting and taking phone calls but when it comes to covering the growing expense of big government distractions on the road are just fine!  Just like gambling and state lotteries, as long as the state can figure out a way to get their piece of the pie, nanny signs a waiver.

Issue:  People will be reading license plates at red lights and stop signs instead of paying attention to what going on around them.

So why do they want this?

The department may consider the use and development of existing or emerging technologies for the creation of a digital electronic license plate for the purpose of generating revenue for the department and state.

They cite savings, but will the savings be passed on to the owner of the plate?  Will drivers still need to pay for their new plates and if so how much will they cost?

Read the bill here:  http://www.aroundthecapitol.com/billtrack/text.html?bvid=20090SB145396AMD

Regardless of what future studies may say, turning license plates into moving billboards is just a bad idea when taking  safety into consideration.  Looks like just another political sellout….
