On Taxes, Paul Ryan is No Gary Johnson

August 13, 2012

Willamette Week

By Mark Zusman

Paul Ryan's specialty is taxes—he is the chair of the House Budget Committee. While he is to the right of Romney on many issues, taxes are not an extreme example. He wants to reduce the top income rate and eliminate taxes on capital gains, interest and dividends, but if you want radical, you have to look to Gary Johnson, the libertarian candidate for President, who wants to abolish the federal income tax, a device that was put in place by the Revenue Act of 1913.

Voting For Ron Paul and Gary Johnson Is Good For Democracy

PolicyMic

By Dave Stacy

In what has become one of the most heated election cycles in recent memory, some voters are told that a vote for a third party candidate is a "wasted vote," or even "a vote for the other guy." This line of thought is self-deceiving: For democracy to truly function and for all ideas to be considered, third party candidates like Gary Johnson must exist.

The Guardian Express

By Aaron Scarboro

As November 6th draws closer and closer, undecided voters across the nation are contemplating their selection for President of the United States. Voters in key swing states such as Ohio, Florida, Virginia, North Carolina and Nevada are being bombarded by negative ads making specious and often times absurd claims about Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. Unsurprisingly, this barrage of negativity has left both candidates with high unfavorable ratings among registered voters.

Fox News

Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson almost certainly can't win the presidential election this year. But his supporters claim he could determine who does. Johnson, the former New Mexico governor who briefly and unsuccessfully competed for the Republican presidential nomination before joining the Libertarians, is polling barely above 5 percent nationwide. Yet his numbers in key battleground states suggest he could make a difference in what is shaping up to be a tight contest between President Obama and Mitt Romney.

The Blaze

Former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson probably won't win the presidential election this year — but that's not to say he won't have an effect on its final outcome.

Johnson, who briefly participated in the Republican presidential primaries before switching over to the Libertarians, is polling at about 5 percent nationwide, according to Fox News. However, despite a poor showing in nationwide polls, he does have some pull in key battleground states, including New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, and Nevada.

August 19, 2012

Gather Politics

By Elan Kesilman

Presidential candidate for the Libertarian Party Gary Johnson has been traveling across Texas this past week in an effort to make his policies known to voters. While Johnson has been on the campaign trail, some members of the media have been trying to label Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan a libertarian, but Johnson begs to differ.

Now that Ryan is in the spotlight, a little controversy over his reading material has begun. It seems Ryan admitted enjoying and being influenced by the novels of Ayn Rand, a writer whose political philosophy greatly shaped the Libertarian party. Of course, now that he's running on the Republican ticket with Mitt Romney, Ryan is downplaying any affection he once had for the libertarian viewpoint.

When Gary Johnson was a GOP primary candidate, he watched in frustration as CNN invited an obviously unqualified Herman Cain onto the debate stage, even as it refused appeals from the former two-term New Mexico governor to take part or even to be included in the polls used to determine eligibility.
