Fwd: Host a National School Choice Week Event - It's Easy

National School Choice Week

Dear Friend --

Happy New Year! I hope that you had a wonderful holiday. For those of us at National School Choice Week, we're busy planning for a huge celebration, January 22-28, 2012. I hope you'll join us in celebrating by planning your own event.

Please take a moment and read the message below from Liz Dreckman, Executive Director of the Arizona School Choice Trust. Liz helped plan some of 2011's most popular events, and she offers some event planning advice and suggestions.

Please remember to register your events and activities online so that we can promote them at no cost to you!

Sincerely,

Kyle Olson

Dear Friends --

The second nationwide School Choice Week is coming soon - don't let your state get left out in the cold! PLAN SOMETHING NOW – YOU STILL HAVE TIME! National School Choice Week offers all the materials, support, and encouragement you need to get a well-attended, well-publicized and exciting event off the ground.

Last year, Arizona's events received significant local and national media attention, and because of that, our gracious friends at National School Choice Week asked me to put together a list of easy-to-replicate ideas for event planners in other states. If you do just one, or many, of these things, your National School Choice Week celebration will be a hit. Contact us for help!

Host a movie showing - at a home, school, think-tank, political club, or business group. National School Choice Week offers several films (for free) that are perfect for public showings.

Plan a statewide balloon launch at private and charter schools across the state - we are hoping to do it this year - we'll provide the biodegradable balloons and schools will launch their National School Choice Week balloons at schools around the state at the same time on the same day. It's a great media visual and kick-off to the week. All the schools have to provide is the time and the helium tank. If you're interested in doing this, let us know; we can give you flyers, access to balloons, and other advice. (Be sure any schools near airports inform appropriate authorities if they expect to have over 100 balloons!)

Host a townhall or virtual townhall - using Chattrspace or another service – and invite local political or education leaders. It can be a debate format or informational.

Host a rally at your state's capitol building. If you think you can get local schools and parents to come out for an event at the Capitol with the National School Choice Week scarves, get that photo in front of the Capitol with your group and send it to the folks at National School Choice Week.

Host a kick-off breakfast at a local school that is doing amazing things, invite media, legislators, community leaders for a tour. Or, make it a multi-school tour.

Call up the local media and tell them about National School Choice Week and how your group is involved. It's an easy, feel-good story and if you can tie it to local outreach, activity, school or student success - all the better!

Ask your Governor or another state leader to read the proclamation for National School Choice Week at an event or press conference.

Feature a local school's or student's success - charter, private or public, it doesn't matter - just highlight where parents have been able to choose and it changed the course of their child's life for good. Write a spotlight/profile story that you can share with media.

Attend any and all state functions that week and bring National School Choice Week scarves. Find someone who can ask for access to the House/Senate floors of your state and leave the scarves on legislators' chairs, at education committee meetings, State Board of Education meetings and the like. Ask a friendly member of these entities to acknowledge National School Choice Week during the meeting.

Don't be intimidated if you have trouble finding groups to sponsor these events, most can be done at little or no cost with light refreshments (if any), and you can get attendance through promotion to like-minded groups, political groups, and friends on social media. Also, don't forget to take advantage of the National School Choice Week website to promote your event and let us help get the word out!

Here's to the best year yet for National School Choice Week and a great beginning to a fantastic year for school choice!

Best wishes,

Liz Dreckman
