Update on Fred Grandy's resignation

Yesterday I reported that CAIR was responsible for Grandy's departure
from WMAL. This statement was made after I personally read several
major news stories from a variety of sources, and they each attributed
the action to pressure from CAIR. However, today's Washington Post, 3
days after the resignation, is reporting that CAIR did not contact the
station regarding this matter and that the Grandy's do not have any
actual evidence of such a contact. Thus, the linkage to CAIR in this
incident is unsupported by the known evidence.
Nonetheless, regardless of where the pressure came from, the basic
facts remain the same. Even the Post article admits that the
resignation was the direct result of the Grandys' repeated discussion
of Islamic extremism. While the Post implies that low ratings may have
been another factor, it does not appear that this claim is being made
by WMAL - and it would be highly unusual for a station to fire a host
on such short notice for ratings.
The only other explanation that I have seen (as a simple blog post)
proposed that this was a fake crisis set-up by Fred Grandy so that he
would be let go from his contract in a manner that would allow him to
launch another run for Congress. The problem with this explanation is
that it still requires action by the station to take action against
Grandy for his speech. Thus, even this explanation fails to exonerate
the station for its actions.
And we should remember that this is the third time that WMAL has let
go a talk show host for their discussions of Islamic extremism.
Michael Graham was let go in 2005(?) and Chris Plante was let go in
2010(?). Chris Plante was later rehired after the Joe Scarborough show
tanked so badly.
Thus, while we should not be linking CAIR to this incident without
evidence, we should be concerned about WMAL's history in taking action
against this type of free speech.
