The United States' financial assistance for the flood-affected population in Pakistan has reached $420 million and would increase with the start of other phases of early recovery and reconstruction, especially after the donor's conference in November.
"Pakistan's needs are huge and the donor community is playing its role, however, the government of Pakistan will be required to arrange its own counterpart funding for this huge task," said Mark S Ward, acting director of the Office of US Foreign Disaster Assistance Bureau for Democracy, Conflict and Humanitarian Assistance on Saturday. Talking to reporters at the US embassy, Ward said the US had been the largest donor with $360 million aid and $60 million military assistance for rescuing flood-affected people.
He said the US army had played a key role in flood assistance activities and rescued some 20,000 people in flood-affected areas with provision of food items worth $14 million.
He said out of $420 million in assistance announced by the United States, the Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance Bureau is spending $115 million, especially in Sindh where floodwater, although receding, is still a cause of difficulty for the population. The US Foreign Disaster Assistance Bureau is carrying out operations in the areas of health, food supplies and cash for work. He lauded the performance and efforts of the Pakistan government, army and the National Disaster Management Authority.
