US Ambassador Anne W Patterson and representatives of the government of Punjab signed a five-year $147.9 million agreement to help improve public education in the province in a ceremony held in Lahore.
The programme will focus on restoring missing facilities in 5,000 schools, which would help increase access and improve the quality of basic education in these schools. The money will also be used to rehabilitate more than 500 flood-affected schools, fund school management committees, purchase textbooks and provide training to school staff.
"We also seek to help the government of Punjab improve the governance in schools by involving school councils in the rehabilitation process," Ambassador Patterson said. "The project will provide funding for the strengthening of local school management committees to help promote a sense of community ownership."
The programme seeks to improve access to quality education in a region that has become increasingly important to Pakistan's stability. It will help the Punjab government increase its capacity to deliver quality education in underserved areas while empowering communities to get involved in their children's learning, improve the quality of learning experience and reduce drop-out rates.
