Re: Let's get something straight about government and Capitalism...

Yes Margareth,

I have an uncle who is a farmer in Georgia.  He has similar views, about how the family farmer is being run out of Dodge, and that we need good Democrats in office who feel his plight, and want to give him, and other family farmers subsidies to help him compete against these evil multi-national corporations.

Just last year, as he was complaining to me and other family members about the plight of the farmer, he had to move his 2009 Jaguar out of the driveway, because of deliveries by one of his suppliers.

We all felt his pain.

In my country at one time, large corporations controlled vast areas.
They had the power of governance over all who lived in the country,
and controlled all commerce to boot.  It was against the rules to take
ones production to competing purchasers, regardless of the price.
That ended with the American Revolution, and with subsequent
reciprocity treaties. It is now possible to produce as much of a
commodity as you want, and sell it to the highest bidder. The trouble
with that is that if too much is produced, the price is reduced, and
producers go broke. That is what happened to the family farm, now a
relic in many regions. What has replaced it is the factory farm, that
has turned the entrepreneurs of old into employees. And low wage
employees at that.
Of course many farmers were able to get together to help each other
out. Sometimes they even formed co-operatives to manage the production
and sales of what they produced..... the governments action was pretty
much to legislate them out of business.... otherwise many would still
be there, with some members of the family working in the factories of
nearby towns, (that have now moved to China.) Some Co-ops were
labelled as commies, because the profit of the producer owned
corporations was distributed among the shareholder farmers. Some of
the profits went to the support of such socialist institutions as
roads, and schools, and hospitals that would benefit the whole
community.
Currently many governments of the world are so beholden to large multi-
national corporations that they will do what they are told.  Why else
do you think that it is so difficult to get American bankers to
consent to any sort of policing?
