Joint Military Exercise “Baltic Host 2010” to Take Place in the Baltic States

Joint Military Exercise "Baltic Host 2010" to Take Place in the Baltic States
From 31 May to 4 June, the Baltic States military exercise "Baltic Host 2010" will take place simultaneously in the capitals of the Baltic States – Riga, Tallinn and Vilnius.

The goal of the exercise "Baltic Host 2010" is to develop action plans by the Baltic States defence sectors together with other state institutions for due and adequate simultaneous reception, staging and onward movement of allied and support units over the territory of all the Baltic States. This year the focus will be placed on cooperation between the defence sector and civil institutions during the Host Nation Support (HNS) operations.

Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, US European Command (EUCOM) and Naval Striking and Support Force NATO, as well as for the first time – Denmark, Poland, Norway and Germany, will participate in the exercise. Latvia will be represented by participants of the National Armed Forces, the Ministry of Defence and State Administrative Institutions Subordinate to the Ministry of Defence, the Security Police, Emergency Medical Assistance Service, Ministry of Transport, State Police, State Border Guard and State Fire and Rescue Service – a total of around 160 people.

The execution of the training task, providing HNS allied forces, will be monitored according to a previously developed scenario that will be based on fictional events. The scenario is based on a pre-crisis situation in a specific region, and the general activities are targeted towards achieving the adjustment and elimination of the circumstances provoking the crisis situation.

In the Baltic States such military exercise was organised for the first time in 2009 in Tartu, Estonia. All participants acknowledged the "Baltic Host 2009" exercise to be very successful and agreed on the fact that it should be established as a permanent training cycle organised in the Baltic States annually.

Host Nation Support is the civilian and military support that the host nation provides during periods of peace, crisis or war for the allied forces and organisations that are located on the state's territory, are carrying out operations in it or are crossing it.
