Subj: Protect Alabama's women by urging your legislator to oppose SB 96 and HB 223

Alabama's legislative session is in day 18. And, instead of focusing on creating jobs and improving our educational structure, they continue to attack Alabama's women by seeking to restrict access to reproductive health care. Let's take action and let Alabama's 'anti-woman, anti-choice' legislators know that ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

There will be two public hearings tomorrow (4/11) for HB 223 (9:00 am) and SB 96 (11:00 am). The public hearings are open to the public and will take place in the Alabama State House.

Here's a brief summary of both bills:

HB 223 - Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers (TRAP)

The ultimate aim of TRAP is to make the provision of abortion services so difficult that the number of health care facilities offering them and the number of women able to afford them will plummet. TRAP bills single out providers of abortion services for tighter regulatory standards regarding architecture, procedures, staffing and equipment, thereby making the standards much more burdensome and costly to meet.

Medical offices that provide abortions already meet detailed regulatory standards. In Alabama, these facilities must meet standards enforced by the Alabama State Board of Health, the Alabama Department of Public Health, as well as the health and safety standards required for all medical offices.

This type of legislation often serves as a "backdoor abortion ban" because without providers or affordable health care options, women will be unable to access safe, legal abortion care.

SB 96 MIFE Ban

SB 96 would make it unlawful to administer any abortion-inducing drug to a woman without receiving an exam by a physician. Additionally, this bill stipulates use of the FDA protocol over the Evidence Based protocol, which is safer, less expensive and easier for the patient.

This bill seeks to further restrict access to reproductive health care to Alabama women. Alabama's abortion code already stipulates that "prior to an abortion, a medical history shall be obtained and recorded. The patient shall be given an appropriate physical examination, as determined by the physician, which may include testing for sexually transmitted diseases". The redundancy of this bill is proof that Alabama's anti-woman, anti-choice legislators are focusing on solidifying their conservative voting base rather than improving the health of Alabama's women.

THESE REGULATIONS ARE ABOUT ANTI-WOMAN, ANTI-CHOICE POLITICS - NOT WOMEN'S HEALTH! Contact your legislator and urge them to put the health of Alabama's women BEFORE politics!
