David Mixner: Marriage Equality Update

Marriage Equality Update

The marriage equality news keeps pouring out of the courts, ballot
measures and legislatures. There has been significant good news this
week. Let's catch-up:

Minnesota: President Obama has come out against the statewide ballot
measure that would ban marriage equality in that state's constitution.
Activists fighting the measure are thrilled with his opposition and it
will be an enormous assistance given that Minnesota will likely be a
safe Obama state in the Fall. Obama earlier came out against the same
type of amendment in North Carolina.

Nevada: Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund has filed a federal
lawsuit in Nevada seeking marriage equality for eight couples. The
case Sevick v.Sandoval uses the equal protection clause of the
Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. The American
Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER) praised the filing, immediately
contributed $25,000 to the case and promised total support. One of the
couples, Beverly Sevick and Mary Barnovich (photograph), in the
lawsuit have been in a relationship for forty years!

Maine: As reported previously, Maine is holding strong. The recent
poll showing 58% in support of marriage equality is a hopeful sign.
Will be interesting to see how the President responds to the Maine
effort since the LGBT community are the ones putting the issue on the
ballot unlike the other states.

Washington State: Those attempting to stop the legislature passed
marriage equality in Washington are off to a slow start. They have two
month left to obtain a 'safe' 150,000 signatures and so far only a
little over 5,000 have been reported. However, there is some sense
that the organizers are holding back petitions sent to over 1,500
churches in the state. My guess is they are low balling it to catch
the media by surprise.

North Carolina: Impressive is the world to describe the organizers
against Amendment 1 in North Carolina. With very little resources and
most people nationally writing them off, they have organized a really
first rate campaign. So far they have raised over a million dollars,
lined up impressive endorsements (see video's), obtained Obama's
opposition to the amendment and just keep plugging away at what seems
like long odds. In an interesting way, Santorum giving up on his
campaign for the Presidency will help them since the Republicans had
counted on a tough primary race in North Carolina to draw out their
vote in May.
