Open Carry: The Children's Book

Open Carry: The Children's Book
By Bruce Vielmetti of the Journal Sentinel

Jan. 9, 2011

A trio of gun rights advocates in Michigan have tried to address the knotty problem of what their kids might go through trying to figure why Mom and Dad go out armed when others don't.

The authors of "My Parents Open Carry" say they couldn't find any pro-gun children's books, and so put theirs together with goal of providing "a wholesome family book that reflects the views of the majority of the American people, i.e., that self-defense is a basic natural right and that firearms provide the most efficient means for that defense."

Writers Brian Jeffs and Nate Nephew are co-founders of Michigan Open Carry. Illustrator Lorna Bergman hunts and shoots. "My Parents Open Carry" is the first book for all three.

Jeffs said White Feather Press, the publisher, has taken some pre-orders at a discounted $14.95, and hopes to stock it in Michigan outdoors stores and on Amazon.com. The book was being printed this week, he said.

The book follows the Strong family along a Saturday of errand-running and the like, when the parents wear sidearms.

"Have fun with Brenna and her family as they turn an otherwise ordinary day into an open carry adventure!" reads the book's back cover.

Safe - Responsible - Fun

If you open carry and have a difficult time explaining why to your family and friends, or if you want to learn about the open carry of a handgun, or if you've wondered if open carry is right for you, then this book is what you need.

My Parents Open Carry was written in the hope of providing a basic overview of the right to keep and bear arms as well as the growing practice of the open carry of a handgun. We fear our children are being raised with a biased view of our constitution and especially in regards to the 2nd Amendment. Before writing this, we looked for pro-gun children's books and couldn't find any. Our goal was to provide a wholesome family book that reflects the views of the majority of the American people, i.e., that self-defense is a basic natural right and that firearms provide the most efficient means for that defense. We truly hope you will enjoy this book and read and discuss it with your children over and over again.

As you read this book, you will learn about the growing practice of open carry, the 2nd Amendment, and the right and responsibility of self-defense.

Home School Teachers:
This book is an excellent text to use as a starting point on the discussion of the 2nd Amendment.

"It is incredible how as soon as a people becomes subject, it promptly falls into such complete forgetfulness of its freedom that it can hardly be roused to the point of regaining it, obeying so easily and so willingly that one is led to say, on beholding such a situation, that this people has not so much lost its liberty as won its enslavement."
- Étienne de la Boétie
