Your declaration that, "the usa has never been a christian nation," based on a phrase in an article of a treaty establishes only one fact - that you have not researched the subject matter.
The Treaty of Tripoli states (in part) that, "the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion," which is perfectly consistent with Amendment I of the Constitution.
Amendment I - Freedom of Religion, Press, Expression. Ratified 12/15/1791.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
Article XI of the Treaty of Tripoli "even if shortened and cut abruptly ('the government of the United States is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion'), is not an untrue statement since it is referring to the federal government. Recall that while the Founders themselves openly described America as a Christian nation, they did include a constitutional prohibition against a federal establishment; religion was a matter left solely to the individual States."[1]
"Therefore, if the article is read as a declaration that the federal government of the United States was not in any sense founded on the Christian religion, such a statement is not a repudiation of the fact that America was considered a Christian nation."[1]
General William Eaton was a major figure in the Barbary Powers conflict. "Eaton's official correspondence during his service confirms that the conflict was a Muslim war against a Christian America."[1]
Additionally, the writings of John Adams, Noah Webster, Daniel Webster, and numerous others from that time period make it abundantly clear that the United States was a Christian nation at that time.

I am gay, atheist and I am offended by the mention of a god in anything my taxes pay for. public/commons should either include ALL religions or non. as it is, the christian community get billions of tax payers dollars with the 'faith-based initiatives' including traveling to other countries helping there law makers write laws that make it illegal to be gay and punishable with death. the usa has never been a christian nation and it never will be a muslim nation. it is a melting pot. "As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquillity, of Mussulmen; and, as the said States never entered into any war, or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties, that no pretext arising from religious opinions, shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries." ~ Tripoli of Barbary. Art. 11. – Authored by American diplomat Joel Barlow in 1796, the following treaty was sent to the floor of the Senate, June 7, 1797, where it was read aloud in its entirety and unanimously approved. John Adams, having seen the treaty, signed it and proudly proclaimed it to the Nation. I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG, OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA , AND TO THE REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS, ONE NATION UNDER GOD, INDIVISIBLE, WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL! If Muslims can pray on Madison Avenue, why are Christians banned from praying in public and erecting religious displays on their holy days? What happened to our National Day of Prayer? Obama says we can't have that, yet Muslims are allowed to block off Madison Ave. in N. Y. and pray in the middle of the street! And, it's a monthly ritual! Tell me again, whose country is this? Ours or the Muslims? I was asked to send this on if I agree, or delete if I don't. It is said that 86% of Americans believe in God. Therefore I have a very hard time understanding why there is such a problem in having 'In God! We Trust' on our money and having 'God' in the Pledge of Allegiance. I believe it's time we stand up for what we believe! If you agree, pass this on, if not, delete * image_jpeg_part 287KViewDownload--
