Re:INDIA: Immediately release journalist  Syed Mohammad Ahmad Kazmi

Dear Mr. Prabhu Dayal ,

I am writing to express my outrage over the recent arrest and detention of Syed Mohammad Ahmad Kazmi, a well-respected journalist, by Indian police.

Mohammad Ahmad Kazmi has been a freelance journalist for almost thirty years, accredited by the Press Information Bureau (PIB). Based in Delhi, he has covered conflicts such as the Iran-Iraq war and the invasion of Iraq by US-led coalition forces for media outlets such as IRNA, IRIB, Doordarshan and BBC.

In 1993 he launched his own news agency dedicated to coverage of the Middle-East, called Media Star News and Features. He is a familiar face in the Indian media, having covered many international summits and proceedings in Parliament. His work entails frequent travel to countries such as Iran, Iraq and Syria.

On 13 February, a bomb blast in New Delhi injured the wife of an Israeli diplomat. With little evidence, Israeli officials immediately blamed Iran and the Lebanese group Hizbullah for the bomb blast, and attempted to link it to a foiled attack in Tbilisi, Georgia.

On 15 February, Mohammad appeared on the political discussion programme Primetime on NDTV. He defended Iran's right to nuclear enrichment, and stated that from his interactions in Iran with lawmakers and MPs he did not believe Iran seeks to develop a nuclear weapon.

On 6 March, Mohammad was taken from the Indian Islamic Centre at approximately 11:30AM. No arrest warrant was presented, and later that day his house was searched by five police officers – none whom produced a search warrant. On 7 March, Mohammad's son Shauzab was intimidated into signing an arrest 'memo', confirming the arrest of his father. Mohammad has now been accused of masterminding the bomb attack on 13 February, which targeted the wife of the Israeli ambassador in Delhi.

I am one of the many who believe that the allegations against Mohammad are politically motivated. It is clear that Mohammad Kazmi – whose journalistic and professional records are impeccable – has been targeted due to his affiliation with an Iranian news agency.

Worryingly, Mohammad has claimed that he has been threatened by plain-clothed interrogators to be handed over to Israeli intelligence for harsher interrogation. This raises serious questions regarding not only India's standards of policing, but also India's national sovereignty. These concerns must be addressed by the Indian government if it is to be viewed as able to protect its own citizens.

If Mohammad Kazmi, a respected journalist who on one occasion met with Prime-Minister Manmohan Singh, can be intimidated and detained without charge – what does this say about freedoms under the world's "largest" democracy?

India must not subordinate its judicial system to the political whims of Israel. Nor should Indian citizens be at the mercy of foreign intelligence services, or the agendas of external forces wishing to pursue their own interests.

I request that as Indian High Commissioner you address the genuine concern that Mohammad Kazmi is being targeted because of his work with an Iranian news agency. The Delhi police force must ensure that Mohammad Kazmi's lawyer is permitted to monitor him during interrogation in order to allay fears that he is being threatened by his interrogators. Unless any charge is brought to Mohammad Kazmi, he must be released immediately from police custody.

I look forward to you reply.

Yours sincerely,

William Nicholas Gomes

New poll shows Libertarian Johnson at 7 percent

March 26, 2012
Examiner.com
By Mark Wachtler

March 26, 2012. Raleigh. A new poll was released on Thursday showing Gary Johnson still a distant third in general election polling, but holding his ground. The former New Mexico Governor had been in the race for the Republican nomination for President. But after being excluded from GOP party surveys and nationally televised debates, Johnson took his campaign and army of libertarian followers into the Libertarian Party.

Read the December 29 issue of this column, 'Does Johnson Defection Doom the GOP?' for details.

Fair Tax would 'reboot' economy, Libertarian leader Johnson says

March 26, 2012
NorwichBulletin.com
By James Mosher

Norwich, Conn. —

Libertarian Party presidential candidate Gary Johnson's balanced budget plan calls for a 43 percent cut in military spending, but he says the U.S. Navy views submarines, a key Eastern Connecticut industry, as crucial.

"I'm not pandering to you," the former New Mexico governor said during a meeting with The Bulletin's editorial board on Monday. "But the Navy views the submarine force as untouchable."

A Day with Presidential Candidate Gary Johnson

March 26, 2012
PNC-Minnesota Bureau
By Cara schulz

Note from the Editor: On Thursday I was able to do something few have the chance to do: spend the entire day with a Presidential candidate.  Two-term Governor of New Mexico and likely Libertarian Party nominee Gary Johnson came to Minnesota for a fundraiser.  What I learned during our time together reinforced the idea that this candidate means it when he claims to represent all Americans.

Gary Johnson doesn't pander to religious extremists. He also shrugs off the conventional wisdom that associating with religious minorities, such as Pagans, is a bad idea.  Back in October, he participated in a Pagan Media Town Hall, at the time when mainstream media most loves to write derogatory fluff articles about Pagans and "real" witches.  Johnson was roundly mocked for his participation by the mainstream press. Even after that, he still accepts me, an open Pagan,  as his Minnesota host.

TLP Quik Hits: Gary Johnson Pursuing Many Of The Same Goals As Ron Paul

March 20, 2012

I urge my fellow supporters of Ron Paul to get behind Gary Johnson's candidacy as soon a possible. Remember, it is about the message, not the messenger and Gary Johnson needs your help if we are going to right the ship in the direction of limited government and personal liberty.

It all begins with name recognition and Gov Johnson's 15% strategy.

Libertarian presidential candidate endorses Washington marijuana legalization

March 19, 2012
The Seattle Times
By Jonathan Martin

The marijuana legalization initiative headed for the November ballot picked up another high-profile endorsement over the weekend: former New Mexico Republican Gov. Gary Johnson.

Johnson, running for president under the Libertarian Party, called Initiative 502 "fiscally responsible and socially pragmatic" in a statement sent out by the initiative campaign.

"We should regulate and tax it like alcohol and tobacco instead of propping up black market
profiteers," Johnson explained. He also expressed concern about the thousands of marijuana
arrests that occur every year. "We have better uses for our police, courts, and jails."

Libertarian Gary Johnson comes to town

March 23, 2012
Minn Post
By Eric Black

Presidential candidate Gary Johnson was in Minneapolis Thursday to raise a little money and explain some miracles.

In case you lost track of him, Johnson started the year running for the Repub nomination, got left out of most of the debates (he claims the networks were unfair to him but declined to say what motivated them), made an impression in the one debate he got into with a joke about how his dog created more "shovel-ready" projects than President Obama has, but has now switched to seeking the Libertarian Party nomination and says he has won every contest on the path to that nomination.

Johnson, 59, was a two-term governor of New Mexico. He ran as a Republican with libertarian leanings (he cut the growth rate of state spending but also advocated decriminalization of marijuana, which is not a normal Republican thing to do). He actually makes a much better Libertarian because his social issue positions are way too far left for today's Repubs and his fiscal ideas are way too far right for Dems. As illustrated by this quote from our conversation:

Indiana Libertarians set to pick 'Survivor' star

March 23, 2012
Real Clear Politics
By The Associated Press

Libertarian Party members are set to nominate former television reality series star Rupert Boneham as their candidate for Indiana governor.

Libertarian officials say the fan favorite from 2004's "Survivor: All-Stars" is unopposed for the party's nomination and that he'll be formally nominated at its state convention in Indianapolis on Saturday. The tie-dye wearing Boneham won $1 million on the TV show and donated some of it to his Rupert's Kids charity, which provides mentoring and job-training to at-risk youths.

Newt Gingrich will drop out by April 15. Ron Paul will drop out by May
1. Both will strongly support Mitt Romney. Gingrich has no choice. His
campaign is dying. He is dependent on one man, Sheldon Adelson, who
will soon drop his support. Ron Paul has a choice, but the choice he
will make is to drop out and support Mitt, after squeezing everything
he can from Romney in the deal. Truth is, Ron is a beautiful old-style

Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul are toast, and why some conservatives will secretly root for Obama

Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul are toast, and why some conservatives will
secretly root for Obama
By Brent Budowsky - 03/23/12 05:40 PM ET

Newt Gingrich will drop out by April 15. Ron Paul will drop out by May
1. Both will strongly support Mitt Romney. Gingrich has no choice. His
campaign is dying. He is dependent on one man, Sheldon Adelson, who
will soon drop his support. Ron Paul has a choice, but the choice he
will make is to drop out and support Mitt, after squeezing everything
he can from Romney in the deal. Truth is, Ron is a beautiful old-style
politician, but he is losing primary support so fast he is losing
leverage fast, which means the price Romney will pay Paul is going
down. So Paul must cut the deal before the price reaches zero.

Newt is just bye-bye ASAP, not worth the time. Paul has the option of
running as a third party, and with his delegates so low this is his
only leverage to pressure Mitt to pay a higher price. So Newt will
drop out because he has to, Ron will sell out because the price is
right, but this must happen sooner rather than later because (in the
tradition of Ron's Austrian economists) Ron Paul's value to Mitt
Romney is declining fast.

Regarding Dick Morris's piece about Santorum ragging on Romney, I feel
Dick's pain, but the problem is not Santorum. Earmark-loving lobbyist
Santorum will be an enthusiastic champion of Romney. So will Paul and
Gingrich.

Rick Santorum will either return to being a millionaire
special-interest lobbyist or seek a government job. In both cases he
needs Mitt. Newt Gingrich will return to being a pay-for-play
millionaire special-interest hustler. He, too, will need Mitt. Ron
Paul already acts like he is partially owned by Mitt. Mitt will
promise things for Rand Paul if Ron does his partisan duty, and
against Rand Paul if Ron does salute, obey and endorse the boss
(Mitt). Goodbye, Austrian economists, hello, vulture capitalists.

Once Gingrich and Paul are out, the next question will be who makes
more gigantic gaffes, the man who does not care about unemployment or
the man who likes firing people.

The real problem for Republicans is that some honorable conservatives
believe that Romney would be a disaster for conservatives. The only
thing these conservatives hate more than Romney winning one term is
Romney winning two terms. Some of these conservatives will secretly
hope Obama wins, so they can nominate a true conservative in 2016.

In a close election, these conservative stay-homes could be fatal for
Republicans, but the more MItt panders to them, the more moderates he
loses, which could also be fatal to Republicans.

In the end, Gingrich and Paul will pander to Romney, but Romney cannot
pander to everyone at the same time. This is why there is secret joy
in the White House, while some on the right will secretly be satisfied
if Obama wins.

Re: Wonkbook: The 3 ways the Court could rule against "Obamacare" mandate

Verilli is certainly no Bork.

Bork was (is) smart.

And we (hopefully) know why "Borked" became a verb.

**JP** Re: Re Pakistan's Deputy Attorney General polishes shoes of devotees at Delhi Gurdwara - The News, Lahore

Shame indeed, especially,on those, who are of age, & who know the actual facts, shame !

Naveed, anyone would guess where the 'shame' is aimed at, but since we are ( at least I am) talking of peace I would not retaliate against you (who is still not of age) with the same coin.

Trains were not only coming from Delhi, ask your dad or some other elder alive to tell you what happened to the trains of Hindus and Sikhs going to India near Muridke and Kaka Shah Kaku in 1947.  And, if you can find some Indian history not raped by the so called scholars like Dr. Safdar Mahmud, you will find the havoc played by  Aurangzeb - the Mujadid of his time and giver of the Islamic Jurisprudence - Fatawa-e Alamgiri - with the non-Muslims especially Sikhs. Hope you read about the Mahmud Ghaznavi's 17 invasions of India ransacking Hindu temples and dragging bare footed or in torn shoes or whatever hundreds of thousands slaves and concubines tied in chains and ropes over the mountains of North West under the extreme vagaries of weather that killed most of them and earned the mountain range the name Hindu Kush, and Mahmud the name of "But Shikan and not But Farosh", which was surprisingly eulogised even by none other than Iqbal also!  But the same But Shikan could not spot 52 feet tall Bamiyan idols only 200 miles away from Ghazna!!  No, Sir he knew of them ver well, only they were not laden with gold and diamonds and were made of clay only.  Let's go a little further, remember the faithful victors killing the non-believers in the morning and marrying their widows the same night?! ( Khalid bin Walid and Laila Malik). Also imagine,  Shahr Bano – daughter of Hurmoz the Iranian Emperor being auctioned in the city square of Medina?! The daughter of the greatest Emperor of his time and being auctioned?!

Naveed, history is replete with such instances.  Everyone who had the better used the power to the detriment of the loser.  It is not only the Sikhs or the Hindus who did it or doing it in Kashmir.  We did it too, though on a much smaller scale than propagated, in erstwhile East Pakistan.  For how long will man keep killing the man, rape the poor helpless women and lance the tossed up children ?  It is time savagery ended somewhere.

So, my dear Naveed, KNOWING IT ALL - Shame or no shame - I still salute Khurshid for offering penance for the wanton killing of Jaspal Singh in his province KPK.

Pakistan's Deputy Attorney General polishes shoes of devotees at Delhi Gurdwara

NEW DELHI: A man in a maroon kurta sits hunched on the floor on Sunday afternoon, polishing the shoes of devotees at a room in Delhi's Gurdwara Rakabganj, reports Times of India.
It's a common sight in gurdwaras, except that this man is Pakistan's deputy attorney general, Muhammad Khurshid Khan, who had requested he be allowed to perform seva (community service) at the shrine.
Khurshid, 62, is an eminent lawyer and a devout Muslim from Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. He is in Delhi for a judicial conference. "I have been more keen on visiting various places of worship here to promote harmony between India and Pakistan," says Khurshid.
Khurshid's tryst with temples and gurdwaras began in 2010 to "heal the wounds of minorities in Pakistan by becoming their sevadar (performer of service)". For him, it was a "penance" for crimes committed by the Taliban.
In February that year, the Taliban had kidnapped three Sikhs from Peshawar and demanded a $235,000 ransom. Pakistan Army rescued two of them, but the third, Jaspal Singh, was killed by the captors. After the killing, Khurshid performed service at a gurdwara in Peshawar. "I seek harmony among all religions," says Khurshid, citing Pakistan's pluralistic heritage. "I am a Muslim, not a terrorist; I am a Khan, not a terrorist; I am from Pakistan, but not a terrorist."
This is Pakistani deputy attorney general Muhammad Khurshid Khan's humble submission as he visits gurdwaras across New Delhi and performs seva (community service).
The Taliban, he says, has plundered Pakistan's pluralistic heritage. "But I want to tell the world it's unfair to tarnish a whole community for the sins of a few," says the Pakhtun who ran for Pakistan's National Assembly twice.
In Delhi for a conference, Khurshid, accompanied by Surinder Singh, a Delhi based businessman whose father was a comrade of Subhas Chandra Bose, has polished shoes at Gurdwara Sisganj and visited Birla Temple and Hanuman Mandir.
Khurshid told TOI that he turned to other faiths after the Taliban beheaded a Sikh, Jaspal Singh, in Peshawar in February 2010. "When I visited the house of Jaspal, I was filled with remorse." The killing weighed on his conscience. He was perturbed that violence in the name of Islam brought a bad name not only to Muslims and Pakistan but also to his people, the Pakhtuns.
The next day, he went to Gurudwara Bhai Joga Singh in Peshawar and sat on the steps. He could hear the chants wafting out of the shrine. "I felt peace," he says. The lawyer started reading about Guru Nanak and approached a member of the gurdwara management committee to allow him the opportunity for seva. After discussions, the gurdwara management committee allowed him to perform seva.
"For two months, I went to the gurdwara daily before the maghrib azaan (call to prayer at sunset) and polished shoes of devotees. "Sevadari is ibaadat (worship)," he says.
In Delhi, Khurshid also went to Jantar Mantar in the hope of meeting Anna. He sent his visiting card and waited for close to an hour but could not meet Anna. But he left the place "charmed". "It is amazing. This is democracy," he said.
On his way back to Pakistan, he will visit the Golden Temple at Amritsar for the 'Jora Ghar Seva (polishing shoes of devotees). He had written to PM Manmohan Singh last year to allow him a chance to perform seva at Amritsar. "I am yet to get a reply," he said.
He has performed similar service at Hindu temples and joined church prayers every Sunday in Pakistan. "I live in a rigid society. But the ulema have never criticized me. The Hadees says anything good must be spread all around," said Khurshid. His gesture has been appreciated by Muslims and minorities in Pakistan.
