Paul Krugman: The Amnesia Candidate: Just how stupid does Mitt Romney think we are?

The Amnesia Candidate
By PAUL KRUGMAN
Published: April 22, 2012

Just how stupid does Mitt Romney think we are? If you've been
following his campaign from the beginning, that's a question you have
probably asked many times.

But the question was raised with particular force last week, when Mr.
Romney tried to make a closed drywall factory in Ohio a symbol of the
Obama administration's economic failure. It was a symbol, all right —
but not in the way he intended.

First of all, many reporters quickly noted a point that Mr. Romney
somehow failed to mention: George W. Bush, not Barack Obama, was
president when the factory in question was closed. Does the Romney
campaign expect Americans to blame President Obama for his
predecessor's policy failure?

Yes, it does. Mr. Romney constantly talks about job losses under Mr.
Obama. Yet all of the net job loss took place in the first few months
of 2009, that is, before any of the new administration's policies had
time to take effect. So the Ohio speech was a perfect illustration of
the way the Romney campaign is banking on amnesia, on the hope that
voters don't remember that Mr. Obama inherited an economy that was
already in free fall.

How does the campaign deal with people who point out the awkward
reality that all of the "Obama" job losses took place before any Obama
policies had taken effect? The fallback argument — which was rolled
out when reporters asked about the factory closure — is that even
though Mr. Obama inherited a deeply troubled economy, he should have
fixed it by now. That factory is still closed, said a Romney adviser,
because of the failure of Obama policies "to really get this economy
going again."

Actually, that factory would probably still be closed even if the
economy had done better — drywall is mainly used in new houses, and
while the economy may be coming back, the Bush-era housing bubble
isn't.

But Mr. Romney's poor choice of a factory for his photo-op aside, I
guess accusing Mr. Obama of not doing enough to promote recovery is a
better argument than blaming him for the effects of Bush policies.
However, it's not much better, since Mr. Romney is essentially
advocating a return to those very same Bush policies. And he's hoping
that you don't remember how badly those policies worked.

For the Bush era didn't just end in catastrophe; it started off badly,
too. Yes, Mr. Obama's jobs record has been disappointing — but it has
been unambiguously better than Mr. Bush's over the comparable period
of his administration.

This is especially true if you focus on private-sector jobs. Overall
employment in the Obama years has been held back by mass layoffs of
schoolteachers and other state and local government employees. But
private-sector employment has recovered almost all the ground lost in
the administration's early months. That compares favorably with the
Bush era: as of March 2004, private employment was still 2.4 million
below its level when Mr. Bush took office.

Oh, and where have those mass layoffs of schoolteachers been taking
place? Largely in states controlled by the G.O.P.: 70 percent of
public job losses have been either in Texas or in states where
Republicans recently took control.

Which brings me to another aspect of the amnesia campaign: Mr. Romney
wants you to attribute all of the shortfalls in economic policy since
2009 (and some that happened in 2008) to the man in the White House,
and forget both the role of Republican-controlled state governments
and the fact that Mr. Obama has faced scorched-earth political
opposition since his first day in office. Basically, the G.O.P. has
blocked the administration's efforts to the maximum extent possible,
then turned around and blamed the administration for not doing enough.

So am I saying that Mr. Obama did everything he could, and that
everything would have been fine if he hadn't faced political
opposition? By no means. Even given the political constraints, the
administration did less than it could and should have in 2009,
especially on housing. Furthermore, Mr. Obama was an active
participant in Washington's destructive "pivot" away from jobs to a
focus on deficit reduction.

And the administration has suffered repeatedly from complacency —
taking a few months of good news as an excuse to rest on its laurels
rather than hammering home the need for more action. It did that in
2010, it did it in 2011, and to a certain extent it has been doing the
same thing this year too. So there is a valid critique one can make of
the administration's handling of the economy.

But that's not the critique Mr. Romney is making. Instead, he's
basically attacking Mr. Obama for not acting as if George Bush had
been given a third term. Are the American people — and perhaps more to
the point, the news media — forgetful enough for that attack to work?
I guess we'll find out.

My son was punished 1 time by a principal for responding with equal
force to a bully.
During my meeting with the principal I informed him that I would hold
him personally responsible for subsequent attacks and that he should
call the police for protection before calling me again.
He never called again.

> I was an enthusiastic part of a movement then that was almost indistinguishable from the Tea Party movement of today, pretty much with all the same virtues and failings: for better or worse, almost exactly the same general cast of characters. Nevertheless, over the outraged squawking of the GOP leadership, it was the candidatewewanted, Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater, who won the nomination that year.
> Goldwater wasn't the first mid-20th century conservative to occupy the political spotlight. That would be Senator Robert Taft -- a little before my time -- who was cheated out of the nomination by a corrupt and empty GOP leadership that had thrown its support to a lifelong Democrat, General Dwight David Eisenhower, no warrior, and not a man of great moral character, but a military politician deluxe, whom billions of wartime propaganda dollars had elevated to virtual godhood.
> Barry wasn't by any means a libertarian, either. The word had hardly been invented, but there were those of us -- mostly Ayn Rand readers -- who willingly accepted his shortcomings, largely because the man seemed to be illuminated from within, by the flame of liberty. There hadn't been anybody quite like him since the original Founding Fathers.

In effect, their fortunes depended on ignoring the Constitution and violating the rights of millions of Americans. It's worth noting here that it's recently been revealed that Jackie Kennedy always thought Johnson had arranged the assassination. She wasn't alone: in college there was an underground play, a parody of what actors call "the Scottish play" entitled MacBird.
> In 1964, the lines were clearly drawn. Johnson was a socialist who infiltrated groups of dissenters, X-rayed people's mail, used the IRS to hound his enemies to death, and was waging what would be a long, drawn-out, hideous, and illegal war in Vietnam for reasons that still elude explanation. At the same time, he was expanding tax-supported entitlement programs that, in the end, still contribute to America's ruin.
> Goldwater wanted to end welfare, balance the budget, and sell off white elephants like the Tennessee Valley Authority. He was in favor of gun ownership and self-defense, blaming the incredibly high violent crime rate at the time (look up "Kitty Genovese") on a failure to respect the Constitution. One serious mistake on his part -- and despite the fact that Johnson was the real war-monger, Barry paid for it dearly in the media -- was that he failed to see that the war in Asia was unjustifiable. He wanted to end it quickly, with overwhelming force.
> Conservatives today -- even those nominally on our side, the correct side, of most other issues -- continue making the same idiotic mistake.

> You may be old enough to remember Nelson Rockefeller -- this guy was typical of the lot, who, in fact, the mass media referred to as "Rockefeller Republicans". An inheritor of his grand-daddy John D. Rockefeller's billions, former Republican Governor of New York state, captain of industry, master mercantilist, and pioneering environmental fascist, some fifteen years after 1964, he died slaving over a hot secretary.
> Rockefeller and his gang were often called "moderate" because they were only moderately in favor of the defense of liberty, and only moderately opposed to injustice. It was to them that Goldwater was speaking when he uttered the famous words written for him by Karl Hess. The media and his mostly-Republican opponents said Barry was crazy. (They should have met Karl!) One magazine that claimed 1800 psychiatrists had diagnosed him as insane was sued out of its lying existence.
> Rockefeller was the very epitome of the useless parasite who thinks he owns America -- not just land and buildings, not just farms and factories, not just railroads and airlines -- thepeopleof the country, you and me, our friends and families, who exist, in the view of slugs like Rockefeller, only to make him wealthier. If it happens to be by working their lives away for his corporations, while half of what they earn is stolen by the government he also owns, that's just fine. If it's by being sent overseas by the thousands or millions to kill or die, so he can fill his coffers with war profit, that's fine, too.
> In the end, although he won the nomination, the Republicans went limp on Barry. Some even bragged about going on vacation during the election. To those who knew what to look for, the treachery was plain to see -- and impossible to forget. Obviously they preferred to see a proto-Marxist win the Presidency, and destroy the country with an insane war and even more insane spending, while trashing individual liberty and civil rights. The 1968 Gun Control Act was passed by the Johnson regime, but that was just okey-dokey with the Rockefeller Republicans -- they were vehemently anti-gun themselves. It's clear that if one of them had been elected instead, it would have made no historical difference at all. Politically, they were all Johnson clones.
> Sound familiar?
> Today, every scribbler or babbler in the "Mainstream Media", and at least three quarters of the pundits in the "New Media", for reasons of their own, want desperately for you to believe that if America's next President isn't going to be Barack Obama, then it has to be Mitt Romney.

> Conservatives I understand. They're vampires, of a sort, or at least Aztecs at heart. Most of them never saw a war they didn't like (or would willingly fight in, but that's a topic for another time). In the 20th century the poor darlings had to wait for the Democrats to start all the wars, so that they could cheer on the bloody mass sacrifices.
> Democrats, who pretend to be the peace party, but did, in fact, start all the wars in the 20th century (with one or two minor exceptions), should be ashamed -- if they were capable of feeling shame, which a lifetime of political activity has taught me they are not.
> In addition to Nelson Rockefeller and his brother Winthrop, the gang consisted of individuals like William Scranton, who wept publicly when Goldwater was nominated, that old Boston codfish Henry Cabot Lodge, Charles Percy, Mark Hatfield, and Raymond P. Shafer. These are the four-flushers, dodgers, and shape-shifters who gave us Richard Nixon.
> And oh, yes, one more: George Romney, Mitt's father, to the best of my recollection, Barry Goldwater's principal enemy, who taught his son to stand for nothing so that he could be held responsible for nothing.
> Mitt hates, loathes, and despisesyourindividual right to own and carry weapons. (He has a D-minus rating from Gun Owners of America.) He has Secret Service protection already, but he did his damnedest to keep Massachusetts Bill-of-Rights-free for years. Everybody is aware by now that he is an original architect of medical Marxism. And if that's not enough, he's said he'd have signed the NDAA. In the end, exactly like Obama, he will deliver the United States and all its assets into the genocidal hands of the United Nations.
> It's clear -- to me, at least -- that if Mitt Romney gets elected instead of Obama, it will make no more historical difference than electing his father or any of his old man's friends would have back in 1964.

Fwd: [I-S] The coming chaos from the Obama-Soertoro playbook

Riots, property destruction, chaos, and death seen in Athens and other European cities shown on the television news is coming to America very soon

The coming chaos from the Obama-Soertoro playbook

- Doug Hagmann Monday, April 23, 2012

America and the world today is in chaos. Wars, rumors of wars, high gasoline prices, increasing food prices, growing divisions among races and between classes, current and impending financial collapses dominate the headlines. Critics and detractors of Barack Hussein Obama claim that it is a result of his failed policies that our house and much of the world is in such disarray. Investigation into the man known as Barack Hussein Obama II and the people behind him suggests otherwise.

The chaos that presently exists domestically and across the globe is destined to get worse, but it's not due to Obama's inexperience or failed policies. Rather, it is the direct result of the implementation of his successful policies. The chaos in which we find ourselves is exactly what has been planned for decades. Chaos is the tactic, the means to an end, and not the result of failure of policy by the man known as Barack Hussein Obama II.

We have seen only the tip of the full frontal assault of the chaos planned for this country. Actually, we haven't seen anything yet.

Connect the dots

Investigative findings suggest that our present state of disorder was crafted long ago, compliments of a shadowy cabal of government leaders and their often unwitting lackeys, complicit media moguls and their eye-candy mouthpieces, and ideologues intent on changing the United States and thus the world. While this might sound like a bad fictional plot from the film noir genre, a good bit of investigation indicates otherwise.

Before dismissing such musings as delusional fodder, carefully consider the current state of our country - and the world - and start to connect the dots, stepping backwards chronologically. As you do, understand that the traditional right-left political paradigm with which we've been indoctrinated no longer exists, except as a distraction to the viewers and listeners of political talk shows hosted by highly paid ornaments who dutifully adhere to narrow scripts of approved show content.

The "necessity" Obama-Soetoro narrative

Our founding fathers had the vision to understand that the biggest threat to our Republic is from within. That's the reason that the founders placed a natural born restriction clause for President at the time the U.S. Constitution was drafted. They understood that there was a contemporaneous threat from a Trojan Horse president, as well as a future threat, despite the other checks and balances constructed within our government. Over time, however, communist influence in our schools and media continued to dilute the literal interpretation of the Constitution. Such revision changed or ignored history altering events, such as the infiltration of Communists into our federal government in the post World War II era. History has been revised. As the famous novelist George Orwell once stated, "He who controls the present, controls the past. He who controls the past, controls the future." That has never been so true as today.

Since 2008, coherent discussion of the bona fides of Barack Hussein Obama II as they relate to his constitutional eligibility has been declared off limits, except to mock and marginalize those who bring up the issue. His association with communists, socialists and other "radicals" has been deliberately downplayed, revised and in some cases, rewritten. This, thanks to the incestuous corporate ownership of big media, which has collectively ensured that legitimate discussion into the legend that is Barack Hussein Obama II, a/k/a Barry Soetoro has been effectively nullified. Unfortunately and in many cases, it's paychecks over patriotism.

Who is Barack Hussein Obama II, a/k/a Barry Soetoro?

To fully understand what is taking place today, and more importantly, what is being planned for tomorrow, we must identify the actors involved in fomenting chaos. Let's first consider the meteoric rise of the virtually unknown community organizer Barack Hussein Obama II, a/k/a Barry Soetoro.

People who have questioned his constitutional eligibility to hold office, known by the pejorative term "birthers," are a troublesome lot among for the Progressives and the establishment Republicans. The issue, however, extends well beyond the Constitutional formality of where Obama was born, as the formal admission that his parental lineage, as questionable as it still is, officially denies him eligibility of the office.

This is not about the Certification of Live Birth, however, as much regarding this has already been written, except for this: any seasoned investigator experienced in conducting background investigations knows that there is no valid substitute for the actual authenticated paper document. When there is an outright refusal to allow for a legitimate inspection of an actual document, combined with an overt redirection of investigators' attention away from the hardcopy form, there is always something being hidden. Always.

Based on extensive research and investigation, this investigator has identified at least 135 legal actions brought against Barack Hussein Obama II, a/k/a Barry Soetoro by plaintiffs demanding authenticated evidence of his eligibility to hold the office of President of the United States. These actions span various venues, from hearings in various courts and before administrative law judges, to the more recent state ballot challenges. In each instance, "team Obama" prevailed.

In many cases, legal giant Perkins Coie defended Obama against these lawsuits. Perkins Coie made headlines in 2006 when they represented Salim Ahmed Hamdan, the alleged driver and bodyguard of Osama Bin Laden.

According to legal financial documents, Obama paid Perkins Coie over $2.5 million in fees to defend him on a variety of issues from October 2008 through the end of 2010. It is unclear exactly how much of that $2.5 million was earmarked for defending Obama against eligibility challenges.

So, from this investigator's perspective, along with Mike Zullo, lead investigator of the Maricopa County, Arizona Cold Case Posse tasked with conducting a law enforcement sanctioned background investigation of Barack Hussein Obama II, it can be concluded that we do not know the legal name or legal status of the individual holding the highest elected office in the United States.

If an American citizen lies to a federal official, they can be charged with a felony. What happens when a federal official lies to the American people? Nothing, it would appear.

Therefore the question still remains: Who is Barack Hussein Obama II, a/k/a Barry Soetoro?

Beyond the birth issue

Some will continue to deride those who adhere to the importance of the Certification of Live Birth. Supporters of "Obama the American" are a prolific and vocal bunch, yet become silent or full of excuses as questions are naturally extended to his refusal to release other records of relevance that would provide valuable and necessary insight into the man currently at the helm of our nation.

Obama-Soetoro has repeatedly refused to produce documentation that former presidents have traditionally provided. In the case of Obama-Soetoro, his passport records, school records from kindergarten forward, Punahou School records, Occidental College records, Columbia University records, his Columbia thesis, Harvard Law School records, Harvard Law Review articles, University of Chicago scholarly articles, Illinois State Bar Association records, Illinois State Senate records and schedules (reportedly "lost"), medical records, important family records including the Obama/Dunham marriage license and divorce documents, and any adoption records remain off limits.

From the perspective of an investigator, there are compelling reasons for Obama-Soetoro to keep these records private, and none are likely to bode well for the putative president. In total, releasing authenticated documents of all of the above would create an accurate historical profile of the man in the Oval Office, which we do not have. Instead, we have the Obama-Soetoro legend, manufactured by… whom? And why?

I pledge allegiance to…

Consider that Obama is, in part, an artifact of the intentional "Balkanization" of America. Look at the historical immigration policies, the intentional lack of enforcement of illegal immigration, and other related issues and question why. Globalists have been constantly attacking our national identity and culture well beyond what was intended and engraved on the Statue of Liberty.

The legend of Barack Hussein Obama II involves much more than a Certification of Live Birth. It's about the very issue our cautioned by our founders. It's allegiance to the United States of Americaand the survival of our nation as a free, Representative Republic.

The founders believed that a natural born citizen would be more inclined to have a "natural" allegiance to the country in which they were born and the principles on which our country was founded. they would protect our freedoms, the rights of citizens, and side with America in international disputes. Are we seeing this in the narrative of Barack Hussein Obama II?

No.

Another question involves the unprecedented contributions made to Obama's 2008 presidential campaign. The amount is somewhere between $650 to $750 million, depending on the source, and a lot of that money reportedly originated from outside of this country. Is this what the founders intended? What strings came with such contributions?

On the morning of Obama's first day in office of January 21, 2009, one of the first, if not the first phone call he made as American leader was to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Less than five months later, on June 4, 2009, Obama kicked off his American apology tour in a speech at Cairo University in Egypt, co-hosted by Al-Azhar University. Obama "honored" a promise made during his presidential campaign to give a major address to Muslims from a Muslim capital during his first few months as president. To date, Obama has not yet stepped foot in Israel, our only democratic ally in the Middle East.

The list could continue ad nauseum and include the recent statement of collusion made in front of a "hot" microphone to the Russians about missile defense. There are numerous other examples that can be used to question the true allegiance of the man known as Barack Hussein Obama II.

Perhaps most troubling, however, is what we are seeing played out on our domestic front. Recall that history has been revised to downplay Obama's associations with Bill Ayers, Bernadine Dohrn, Rashid Khalidi, Jeff Jones, and many other communist, socialists, Leninists and Marxists revolutionaries. Recall their objectives, and put them in perspective to current events.

Peering into the Obama-Soetoro domestic playbook

"Our primary task is to build a Marxist-Leninist revolutionary movement. The American system is racist, capitalist and imperialist. We must arm ourselves. I believe we are going to have a revolutionary change in society. -Michael Klonsky 1969 SDS Center, Washington, DC (with Bernadine Dohrn and Allen Young)

Revolutionaries thrive on chaos. Protests offer opportunity to spread chaos and in nearly every protest, trained agitators of the Progressives appear on site to inflame passions, foment disorder and violence.

This putative president and the powers behind him knew the consequences of fueling the Arab Spring, from our role in Tunisia to Egypt and the chaos that would result. Equally important, he knew the ramifications that would result from his polarizing statements pertaining to the Trayvon Martin case, and the racial divide that would be exacerbated.

He knows the results of our oppressive domestic energy policy, which are exacerbating the economic divide within the U.S. and the societal upheaval that will result.

He knows the results of our unlimited monetary printing presses that will bring our economy to its knees. So emboldened is Obama, that he continues to work with Jon Corzine of MF Global, the man behind the missing $1.6 billion of American's money. He knows that the economic collapse of America is coming. He knows that there will be riots in the streets.

Is he preparing for it? Yes, but not in the manner that a truly American president should.

Obama, the Emperor

Consider recent executive orders and other executive actions as "big dots" in our dot connecting exercise. The importance or relevance of these executive orders in our normal existence have either been downplayed or ignored by the media, and are subject to ridicule when brought up in political discussions. After all, they've been standard procedure since 1789.

DOT: On Friday, April 13, 2012, Obama signed an executive order titled " Supporting Safe and Responsible Development of Unconventional Domestic Natural Gas Resources." This order is a stepping stone for the takeover of the natural gas (and related) industry. Moreover, it creates an oversight group headed by Ceclia Munoz, chairman of the White House Domestic Policy Council who connected to globalist George Soros and a number of other socialist groups antagonistic to private U.S. energy production.

DOT: On Friday, March 16, 2012, Obama signed the order on National Defense Resources Preparedness, which dramatically expanded the Defense Production Act of 1950, and essentially gives Obama the power to take over our national resources and infrastructure for reasons that are no longer limited to times of war or declared states of national emergency.

DOT: On February 9, 2012, Obama signed Executive Order 13600, "Establishing the President's Global Development Council," which is an enhancement of the 2010 National Security Strategy and the Presidential Policy Directive on Global Development. In short, it is internal subjugation to a global agenda, or global governance.

DOT: Consider that the Department of Homeland Security recently acquisitioned 450 million rounds of .40 caliber ammunition (an indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity, one year contract with 4 option years). Hollow points, as well, which are not used for target practice. Also consider that the Department of agriculture has ordered 326,000 rounds of mixed caliber ammunition this month as well.

DOT: Consider that the executive branch has the unfettered authority to execute American Citizens deemed "a threat."

DOT: Several unconfirmed reports indicate that the Department of Homeland Security have ordered Mine Resistant Anti-personnel Carriers (MRAPs) for deployment in the United States.

DOT: During a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing in March, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey openly admitted that their authority comes not from the U.S. Constitution, but they take their orders from the United Nations and NATO, international bodies over which the American people have no democratic influence.

DOT: Consider other reports of FEMA quarters being readied here in the U.S., ostensibly for disaster relief and protection of its citizens. I

Far-right anti-Muslim network on rise globally as Breivik trial opens
Report highlights UK role in the growth of groups that inspired

The international network of counter-jihadist groups that inspired
Anders Behring Breivik is growing in reach and influence, according to
a report released on the eve of the Norwegian's trial.

Far-right organisations are becoming more cohesive as they forge
alliances throughout Europe and the US, says the study, with 190
groups now identified as promoting an Islamophobic agenda.

This week Breivik will appear on trial in Oslo after confessing to the
murder of 77 people in Norway last July, killings that he justified as
part of a "war" between the west and Islamists.

The report, by anti-racism group Hope Not Hate, states that since the
33-year-old's killing spree, the counter-jihad movement – a network of
foundations, bloggers, political activists and street gangs – has
continued to proliferate.

Campaigners cite the formation three months ago of the Stop
Islamization of Nations (Sion) group, designed to promote an umbrella
network of counter-jihad groups across Europe and the US, as evidence
of a global evolution.

An inaugural Sion summit is planned in New York this year to coincide
with the anniversary of 9/11. Speakers are set to include Paul Weston,
chairman of the anti-Islamic British Freedom Party (BFP), which
recently announced a pact with the English Defence League. In the
manifesto that Breivik published online 90 minutes before his attacks,
he cited blog postings by Weston which discussed a "European civil
war" between the west and Islam.

Researchers at Hope Not Hate name the UK as one of Europe's most
active countries in terms of counter-jihad extremism, with 22
anti-Islamic groups currently operating.

In Europe as a whole, 133 organisations were named in the report,
including seven in Norway, and another 47 in the US, where a network
of neo-conservative, evangelical and conservative organisations
attempts to spread "negative perceptions of Islam, Muslim minorities
and Islamic culture".

Nick Lowles, director of Hope Not Hate said: "Breivik acted alone but
it was the 'counter-Jihadist' ideology that inspired him and gave him
the reasoning to carry out these atrocious attacks. All eyes this week
will be on what Breivik did last July, but we ignore those people who
inspired him at our peril."

Andreas Mammone, a historian at Kingston University in London and an
expert on European fascism, said broader factors had helped the
counter-jihad movement to consolidate support. "The economic crisis
continues to promote nationalism alongside the need for a common
enemy. A fear of radical Islam is being developed, the idea that it
presents a threat to our freedom," he said.

The report also identifies the counter-jihad network's most
influential figures, including EDL leader Stephen Yaxley-Lennon (known
as Tommy Robinson), but also the more discreet London property tycoon
Ann Marchini, whose details surfaced on a leaked list of EDL donors
and who is understood to have attended counter-jihad conferences in
Scandinavia, Brussels, Zurich and London. She attended a recent
meeting where the EDL agreed its electoral pact with the BFP and is
also understood to be involved with the UK wing of the Centre for
Vigilant Freedom (CVF), and a well-funded US group renamed the
International Civil Liberties Alliance (ICLA), which is based in
Fairfax, Virginia, and co-ordinates individuals and groups in 20
countries.

The ICLA also runs the Counter-Jihad Europa website, which acts as a
"clearing house for national initiatives to oppose the Islamisation of
Europe". Three months after Breivik's attacks the ICLA organised a
counter-jihad conference in London with the help of its European
co-ordinator, Christopher Knowles, another EDL co-founder and director
of the UK branch of the CVF, which is registered in Wakefield.

New anti-Islamic groups continue to emerge. Two weeks ago in Denmark,
Yaxley-Lennon held the inaugural meeting of a Europe-wide network of
defence leagues. Another new group, founded in Belgium last month, is
Women Against Islamisation, a pan-European network whose launch was
addressed by Jackie Cook, the wife of Nick Griffin, chairman of the
British National party (BNP).

In Greece, polls suggest the ultra-nationalist Golden Dawn could pass
the 3% threshold required to enter parliament in elections next month.

Another development concerns the hardening of links between European
and US anti-Islamic organisations. US blogger Pamela Geller is a key
figure driving closer transatlantic relations. Geller, who is
president of Sion, was mentioned in Breivik's manifesto and was a
vociferous protester against the development of a mosque in Lower
Manhattan in 2010.

The co-founder of Sion is Denmark's Anders Gravers, organiser of Stop
Islamisation of Europe. Gravers met Yaxley-Lennon in Denmark last
month.

Campaigners are concerned that US neo-conservative and evangelical
groups will begin sharing resources with the leagues. Images of EDL
demonstrations are already used at Tea Party movement fundraising
events, while officials from groups such as the Christian Action
Network have met EDL activists. Other US and UK links include the
Virginia-based anti-Islamic blog, the Gates Of Vienna, which counted
Breivik as a contributor. As attention turns to Norway, experts are
keen to stress that the country was not unusual in terms of the extent
of its counter-jihadist movement. Among the online forums linked to
Breivik are the nationalist blog Document.no, on which Breivik posted
more than 100 comments.

Breivik – an admirer of the EDL – was also an online supporter of the
Norwegian Defence League, which retains close links with its English
counterpart.

President Obama endorses anti-bullying bills, screens "Bully" documentary at White House

Obama endorses anti-bullying bills, screens "Bully" documentary at White House
SDGLN Staff

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama on Friday declared his support
for two bills that would protect students from bullying, then
screening "Bully" the acclaimed documentary at the White House.

"The President and his Administration have taken many steps to address
the issue of bullying. He is proud to support the Student
Non-Discrimination Act [SNDA], introduced by Senator [Al] Franken and
Congressman [Jared] Polis, and the Safe Schools Improvement Act
[SSIA], introduced by Senator [Robert] Casey and Congresswoman Linda
Sanchez. These bills will help ensure that all students are safe and
healthy and can learn in environments free from discrimination,
bullying and harassment," the White House said in a statement.

Each bill takes a different approach to address bullying. SNDA would
ban harassment in public schools based on a student's actual or
perceived LGBT status. SSIA would require schools to adopt
anti-bullying codes of conduct and submit data to the Department of
Education on bullying.

Obama's announcement coincided with the Gay, Lesbian and Straight
Education Network's (GLSEN) 17th annual Day of Silence, held Friday
this year, in which students take a vow of silence to draw attention
to the anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment in schools.

"Bully" was shown at the White House on the day the documentary
expanded its screening sites around the country.

"Earlier today, we screened 'Bully' at the White House," Valerie
Jarrett, senior staff to Obama, said in a statement. "This film is a
powerful call to action: We must do everything we can to work toward
the day when no young person or family suffers the pain, agony, and
loss caused by bulling in our schools and communities.

"In the last few years, President Obama and his Administration have
taken significant steps towards this goal. We also hope that Congress
will take action to ensure that all students are safe and healthy and
can learn in environments free from discrimination, bullying, and
harassment by passing the Student Non-Discrimination Act (SNDA) and
the Safe Schools Improvement Act (SSIA). These pieces of legislation
are critically important to addressing bullying in our schools and
safeguarding our most vulnerable students," she said.

About 150 people attended the screening of "Bully" at the White House,
including director Lee Hirsch and many of the families and children
who shared their stories in the documentary. Leaders of groups such as
GLSEN, National Coalition for Learning Disabilities, Facing History,
ACLU and Change.org also attended.

Obama's support for anti-bullying measures quickly drew praise,
including from The Trevor Project, which provides crisis intervention
and suicide prevention services to LGBTQ youth under age 24.

"The White House took a meaningful step in protecting all students,
regardless of real or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity,
by endorsing the Safe Schools Improvement Act and the Student
Non-Discrimination Act. Together, these pieces of legislation provide
tools and resources for schools and universities to protect our youth
from harassment and bullying and establish structures for safety,
prevention, and support," said Abbe Land, executive director and CEO
of The Trevor Project.

"At The Trevor Project, we know that young people who are at risk to
harm themselves, including attempting suicide, are less likely to do
so if they know of one resource that they can safely turn to in times
of crisis. By endorsing these important pieces of legislation, the
Obama Administration is sending a strong message to ensure every
school and university has the support and responsibility to be a
life-saving, life-affirming resource."

Mara Keisling, executive director of National Center for Transgender
Equality, also welcomed the President's support.

"These two safe schools bills are just tremendously important to trans
youth and President Obama's endorsement is another example of his
broad commitment to trans people and trans issues. We are thankful to
Senators Al Franken and Bob Casey and Representatives Jared Polis and
Linda Sanchez for their leadership on these issues. According to the
National Transgender Discrimination Survey, trans and gender
nonconforming young people face startling amounts of harassment,
assault and sexual violence at school, with more extreme rates of
harassment and violence among trans youth of color. Trans kids are
hurting and we have a way to stop that. Congress must act quickly to
protect our transgender young people," Keisling said.

Hayley Gorenberg, deputy legal director of Lambda Legal, was thrilled
with the news.

"We applaud the Obama administration for endorsing this critical piece
of legislation. We thank Sen. Al Franken, Rep. Jared Polis, Rep.
Barney Frank and Rep. Tammy Baldwin and over 50 other current sponsors
for their leadership on this bill and we urge Congress to pass it,"
she said.

"At Lambda Legal, we've encountered extraordinary cases of violence
and discrimination against LGBT young people in schools - and
sometimes against the allies who try to support them. The Student
Non-Discrimination Act takes a big step toward a safer and healthier
environment in every public school," Gorenberg said.

"Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students have long been at a
significant disadvantage without specific protection under federal
law. All students have a right to a safe learning environment, and
this law will leave no doubt as to public schools' responsibility to
provide it."

Joe Solmonese, HRC's outgoing president, also commented.

"The President's endorsement of the SNDA and SSIA recognizes the
importance of providing LGBT students with the same civil rights
protections as other students," Solmonese said. "No student should
feel scared when walking into their school and these bills would
address the discrimination and bullying that our youth have endured
for far too long."
