What "Debates?"
What "Debates?"
Posted by Butler Shaffer on December 10, 2011 12:10 PM
One of the cable news channels is trying to convince me that there will be a Republican presidential debate tonight. These periodic shows are not debates, but auditions. Would-be stars and starlets get up on the stage not to impress voters - who will have little say in selecting the next White House sock puppet - but the show's producers (i.e., the institutional establishment owners) who keep the boobeoisie buying tickets every four years. The owners want to find out which candidate can most readily recite the lines of the script they seek to perform; who can best appeal to the emotions and sentiments of audiences; who can look and sound "presidential," so as to assure Boobus that his fate, and that of his family, are directed by the whims of one they can trust!
Ron Paul is anathema to the institutional owners for one reason: he wants to change the script! He insists on doing what the established order has so carefully trained Boobus not to do, namely, to question the entire arrangement by which control of his life has been usurped. While Newt Grinch continues to dreg up from the depths of his dark side his most arrogant and sneering qualities - traits that would serve well the leader of a war-loving empire - Ron is asking people to (gulp!) think about the moral and social implications of what we are doing.
The recent refusal of the Republican Jewish Coalition to allow Ron Paul to join other GOP candidates as a speaker, was but the latest example of his being systematically excluded from any discussion of governmental policies. As Jon Stewart so correctly labeled this decision, inviting Ron might have turned the entire program into a, . . . well, a debate.
A question that comes to mind is this: why isn't the Democratic Party also having candidate debates for 2012? The answer, I believe, does not lie in some universal popularity of Barack Obama among Democrats, many of whom are quite critical of his presidency. The explanation is to be found in the fact that Obama is the established occupant of the seat of power. As the treatment of Ron Paul shows, there is nothing that the institutional owners fear more than that members of the boobeoisie might begin questioning - and (gasp!) rejecting - established power interests.
Ron Paul, Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney: Who Funds Them?
Ron Paul, Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney: Who Funds Them?
Analysis
By Joe Romaine
December 9, 2011 3:54 PM EST
If you want to know the truth, follow the money. Or so says conventional wisdom.
The 2012 GOP nomination race is shaping up to be a three-man contest between Ron Paul, Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney.
Paul's support has steadily climbed. Romney is persistently the front-runner until the "flavor of the month" candidate displaces him. Gingrich may very well be the current "flavor of the month" candidate.
So who are they funded by? This question matters for two reasons. It betrays who the candidate would benefit because those individuals would presumably donate to the candidate. It may also betray who the candidates "owes" once he is elected.
Paul
48 percent from small individual contributions
Ron Paul for Congress Cmte, U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, Mason Capital Management, Microsoft, Boeing, Google, Overland Sheep, IBM*
Gingrich
43 percent from small individual contributions
Rock-Tenn Co, Poet LLC, First Fiscal Fund, Pull-A-Part Inc, Amway/Alticor Inc, State Mutual Insurance, American Fruits & Flavors, Streck Inc, Windway Capital, Wirco Inc*
Romney
10 percent from small individual contributions
Goldman Sachs, Credit Suisse Group, Morgan Stanley, HIG Capital, Barclays, Kirkland & Ellis, Bank of America, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, EMC Corp, JPMorgan Chase*
*From OpenSecrets.org: The organizations themselves did not donate, rather the money came from the organizations' PACs, their individual members or employees or owners, and those individuals' immediate families.
Total Raised
Mitt Romney - $32 million
Ron Paul - $13 million
Newt Gingrich - $3 million
Discussion
Romney notably fails to attract the so-called "99 percent" and relies heavily on the so-called "1 percent." Gingrich and Paul were more balanced.
Romney has by far the most money of any GOP presidential candidates. Paul is third. Gingrich is woefully behind at $3 million, placing him 8th behind the likes of Tim Pawlenty and Jon Huntsman. (OpenScecret.org's data, however, ends on Sept. 30, 2011, which is before Gingrich's surge that started in November.)
Romney is flooded with money from Wall Street, notably from Goldman Sachs.
Gingrich's top contributor, Rock-Tenn, is a packaging company based in his home state of Georgia. His second highest contributor, Poet LLC, is the largest ethanol producer in the U.S.
Gingrich's cozy relationship with Poet underscores his "deep ties to an industry whose government subsidies he has steadfastly defended even while running as a fiscal conservative," according to USA Today.
Paul's top contributors, interestingly, is the U.S. military. Paul is noted for his non-interventionist stance, promising to bring home U.S. troops stationed in Iraq, Afghanistan and all over the world.
This suggests that at least some members of the U.S. military support Paul's position.

Obama Rebirthed as TR
Weekend Edition December 9-11, 2011
CounterPunch Diary
Obama Rebirthed as TR
by ALEXANDER COCKBURN
When in doubt, wheel on Teddy Roosevelt. It's in every Democratic president's playbook. TR was president from 1901 to 1909. He was manly, ranching in North Dakota, exploring the Amazon and nearly expiring on the River of Doubt. He was an imperialist con amore, charging up San Juan Hill, sending the Great White Fleet round the world, proclaiming America's destiny as an enforcer on the world stage. He loved wilderness, mostly through the sights of a big game hunter's rifle a wilderness suitably cleansed of Indians. "I don't go so far as to think that the only good Indians are dead Indians," he wrote in The Winning of the West, "but I believe nine out of ten are, and I shouldn't like to inquire too closely into the case of the tenth."
When necessary he could play the populist rabble-rouser's card, flaying the trusts, railing against "the malefactors of great wealth". But on TR's watch the modern, centralized corporate American state came of age. H.L. Mencken writes of him in Prejudices II that
- "Roosevelt, for all his fluent mastery of democratic counter-words, democratic gestures and all the rest of the armamentarium of the mob-master, had no such faith in his heart of hearts. He didn't believe in democracy. He believed simply in government. His remedy for all the great pangs and longings of existence was not a dispersion of authority, but a hard concentration of authority. He was not in favor of unlimited experiment; he was in favor of a rigid control from above, a despotism of inspired prophets and policemen… He was for a paternalism of the true Bismarckian pattern, almost of the Napoleonic pattern – a paternalism concerning itself with all things, from the regulation of coal-mining and meat-packing to the regulation of spelling and marital rights… When he tackled the trusts the thing that he had in his mind's eye was not the restoration of competition but the subordination of all private trusts to one great national trust with himself at its head."
- "Both dreamed of gigantic navies, with battleships as long as Brooklyn Bridge. Both preached incessantly the duty of the citizen to the state, with the soft-pedal on the duty of the state to the citizen. Both praised the habitually gravid wife. Both believed in the armed pursuit of the lower fauna… Both were intimates of God and announced His desires with authority."
But now Obama has seized on TR as his role model in denouncing those destroying the supposed guarantee of the American Way, strangely defining TR's philosophy as one guaranteeing that every citizen gets a fair bounce on the trampoline, soaring into the safe harbor of "the middle class". As for imperial destiny, last month Obama did his own reprise on the Great White Fleet, opening a new US marine base in Australia and shaking his fist at China.
Last Tuesday in Osawatomie, Kansas where TR, attempting a political comeback in 1910, slagged corporate power for the benefit of his audience of 30,000 prairie populists, Obama told a crowd of 1,200: "At stake is whether this will be a country where working people can earn enough to raise a family, build a modest savings, own a home, and secure their retirement."
He went on: "There are some who seem to be suffering from a kind of collective amnesia. After all that's happened, after the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, they want to return to the same practices that got us into this mess."
Obama and crew are obviously betting that there won't be too much unseemly sniggering at the sight of a president thus blithely denying the prime feature of his conduct during the worst economic crisis in 70 years, which was to pick an economic team -- Tim Geithner as Treasury Secretary, Lawrence Summers as his chief economic adviser determined precisely to "return to the same practices that got us into this mess," to head off any serious economic reform of those institutions and practices that prompted the great crash of 2008.
Obama could have played the populist card back at the start of August amid the Republicans' efforts to force savage cuts in the social safety net. But he blinked. Now, four months later, there's the Occupy Wall Street movement reminding Americans that in practice as opposed to rhetoric Obama has been a doughty protector of the one per cent. OWSers heckled him fiercely in New Hampshire three weeks ago. But of course Republicans aren't going to be attacking Obama as the pawn of the bankers. They favor the absurd script that designates him as a closet commie, scheming night and day to bring the most bloodthirsty scenarios of Karl Marx to fruition. So from their point of view the Osawatomie speech was gratifying vindication of all their most lurid charges.
Ever the trimmer, Obama was obviously aware that with this lunge into rhetorical populism he was exposing himself to just such charges. So amid his execrations against the Republicans for not supporting the Democrats' effort to extend the two per cent reduction in the payroll tax, he suddenly threw in a homage to deficit reduction, thus doing a mini-reprise on his collapse in August. The irony is that the continued reduction on the payroll tax Obama is campaigning for means that the Social Security fund is getting two per cent less. Even though the missing two per cent is supposedly meant to be replaced by money from elsewhere in the federal budget, the drop in Social Security revenues from the payroll tax will allow those urging "reform" of Social Security -- ie its eventual destruction -- to claim ever more fiercely that the system is in budgetary crisis.

Gingrich and Pelosi
Gingrich and Pelosi
Posted by Laurence Vance on December 8, 2011 08:17 PM
Not only did Gingrich cosponsor the 1989 climate change bill with Pelosi, he cosponsored 418 bills with her. The Republicans are despicable to elevate Gingrich above Ron Paul. And that goes for the Tea Party members who support Gingrich also. I keep hearing that Republicans are supporting Gingrich because they don't like Romney. Like there is really any difference. At least Romney didn't bounce checks at the House Bank, divorce two wives, and receive a $300,000 fine by the House for ethics violations.
It is too bad that Sam Francis is no longer with us. He would be making some comments about the stupid party.
**JP** Black Money and Tax evasion has always been a failure in Pakistan
Dear Friends, Black Money and Tax Evasion has always been a Failure in Pakistan BY. Shoaib Habib Memon Tackling twin menace of black money and tax evasion has always been a failure in Pakistan. Successive governments, instead of dealing with these issues with an iron hand, have been pardoning the corrupt and appeasing tax evaders through various laws and amnesty schemes. The result is obvious. There is an ever-growing informal economy undermining national growth and promoting lack of transparency in all spheres of life. Political culture is fraught with favours to those having money power and control over economic resources - both, anti-thesis of a true democratic set up. All steps and schemes taken in the past to document informal economy have miserably failed and black economy has relentlessly been growing rather than there being any sign of decline. The present size of underground economy at US $85 billion, almost half of formal economy, is symptomatic of a deep illness of the system where the corrupt rule and the honest suffer, the rich thrive and the poor strive yet starve. The corrupt, occupying top positions in State institutions, are giving blanket protection to offenders and plunderers of national wealth. In other civilised societies such anti-State elements are treated with iron hand, their ill-gotten money and assets are seized through proper legislation and exemplary punishments awarded to them. The latest tax amnesty scheme, announced by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) under the name of 'Tax Investment Scheme', is yet another attempt to protect tax evaders asking them to pay just 2% of fair market value of their untaxed incomes and assets and no question would be asked about their sources. Like all previous schemes, it will also prove a fiasco, being a move in the wrong direction: "persuading with helplessness" the corrupt to pay tax without realising that it is they who now control the State and are least pushed to whiten their colossal money and wealth lying outside Pakistan. This scheme will further shatter the confidence of law-abiding citizens in the system of governance, besides adding to the prevailing illusions that even the so-called elected representatives in parliament are capable of passing such erratic laws. The recurrent appearance of amnesty schemes and money whitening instruments/modes shows that the State has conceded the failure of its tax machinery in performing its main function of collection of tax from wherever it is due. This nation has become addicted to easy money and such schemes/instruments have become a routine matter for them. Those people, hooked on ill-gotten wealth/income for the last many years know for certain that every now and then, there will be an amnesty scheme giving them a chance to get their income/assets whitened by paying far less the amount than what they are required to pay under the normal tax regime. It is a tragic situation where the entire State apparatus is subservient to those who blatantly manage to hide their income and wealth. It is an ugly joke with those who have been paying their taxes honestly at much higher rates than those offered to tax evaders (2%) under the ongoing scheme. One of the worst consequences of black money and tax evasion is its pernicious effect on the general moral fabric of society. It puts integrity at a discount and places a premium on vulgar and ostentatious display of wealth. This shatters the faith of the common man in the concept of dignity of honest labour and virtuous living. It is, therefore, no exaggeration to say that ill-gotten wealth is like a cancerous growth in the country's economy, which if not checked in time, is certain to culminate in its doom. Apart from direct monetary costs of corruption, other significant costs, such as loss of government credibility, spread of injustice, distortions in resource allocations and loss of foreign and local investment, are destroying the very fibre of civil society in Pakistan. Judging from different studies and reports published in print media from time to time, Pakistan's underground economy has the following salient features: Since 1979 (courtesy General Zia's legacy of speed money culture and its adoption by all the subsequent governments, notably that of Benazir Bhutto, Nawaz Sharif and Musharraf et al), our underground economy has developed at a surprising rate. Its large size ranging between 22% to 35% of GDP is a cause of great concern for both official and independent economists. Its manifestations are very wide. It is not only large and all-pervasive but also exists in daily life of every Pakistani. It includes production of fake and substandard goods, smuggling, "black society" economy, human trafficking, contraband drugs, massive infringement of copyrights, interloping, tax evasion with the active collaboration of tax officials, financial corruption and rent-seeking [exchange of power for money] activities of government officials, plundering of bank loans, just to name a few and significant ones. Massive migration towards big cities confirms that a huge population of Pakistan is directly engaged in underground economic activities. Large-scale mobility of people is also a contributing factor in generating underground economy eg high demand of local private houses to accommodate the mobile population. Active participation of government officials is the most disturbing feature of Pakistan's underground economy. The rent-seeking activities of the government functionaries emerge in an endless stream. They are the single most important catalyst for accelerating the growth and sustainability of underground economy. The State has miserably failed to check rampant corruption amongst their officials. They have emerged as the most powerful mafia whose control over the underground economy is now invincible. The government must constitute an expert committee to determine the negative effects of underground economy. It has certainly created distortions in the statistical data vital for economic planning and macroeconomic decision-making, but its one most devastating and direct effect is considerable loss of tax revenues of the State. Theoretically, losses of tax revenue not only refer to a static result, ie the tax revenue lost by the fact that the taxes payable failed to be levied or collected for all kinds of reasons, but also mean a dynamic loss process. TAX REVENUE LOSSES CAN BE DIVIDED INTO THREE CATEGORIES: 1. tax revenue loss of a compliance nature; 2. tax revenue loss of an administrative nature; and 3. tax revenue loss of an institutional nature. Among these three categories, revenue loss of compliance nature results from underground economic activities because of taxpayers' evasion and fraud by non-compliance with tax laws, and such a loss is characterised by erosion of the tax base. The latter two types of tax revenue losses exist in the public economic field, and are characterised by reduction in effective tax rates. In Pakistan, tax revenue losses due to inefficient and corrupt tax machinery are equally significant. Tax officials do not only properly enforce the promulgated laws, are always hesitant to probe tax frauds but also take active part in providing their "expert services" for exchange of money to tax evaders and plunderers of national wealth. They are active and potential generators of untaxed black money in the country. IN PAKISTAN, TAX REVENUE LOSSES STEMMING FROM THE UNDERGROUND ECONOMY CAN BE BRIEFLY SUMMED UP AS UNDER: Taxpayers do not register with the tax departments. One reason for this might be the activities they undertake which are illegal or even criminal, and another reason might be that the taxpayers attempt to escape registration and interlope for the purpose of tax evasion, despite the legal nature of their business; Although a taxpayer registers with the authorities but he resorts to non-reporting. Taxpayers indulge in under-reporting so that a wide gap exists between the tax liability reported and the tax which would have been payable if tax returns were correct. On the basis of different studies conducted to determine the size of underground economy in Pakistan, in terms of different taxes, the following table shows the ratio of the lost commercial and industrial taxes to that of actually collected in the last 20 years: ==================== Year % (losses) ==================== 1988-89 58.65 1989-90 60.75 1990-91 62.22 1991-92 58.44 1992-93 61.25 1993-94 64.55 1994-95 57.15 1995-96 70.20 1996-97 83.06 1997-98 89.04 1998-99 84.69 1999-2000 85.45 2000-2001 87.83 2001-2002 88.25 2002-2003 87.95 2003-2004 86.35 2004-2005 85.80 2005-2006 87.25 2006-2007 88.42 2007-2008 87.80 ==================== As evident from above, our underground economy has caused substantial loss of revenue during the last 20 years, and brought about plenty of negative economic effects forcing the national growth to deviate from the objectives of efficiency and equity. A direct consequence of tax revenue losses is a reduction in the government's fiscal targets. Our fiscal deficit could have been substantially low or even zero had the State effectively tackled growth of underground economy. It is an irrefutable fact that tax revenue losses due to underground economy, in turn, aggravates income distribution and wealthy classes became more powerful thus making the entire society subservient to their interests and control. These colossal revenue losses reduce the efficacy of allocation of social resources thus seriously retarding equitable distribution of societal benefits to cross-sections of society. It is an incontrovertible fact that the income gap among the Pakistanis has been gradually widening and trend of rich becoming richer and the poor poorer is gaining strength. Generally, the analysts have attributed it to economic policy, but they have neglected the impact on income distribution of tax revenue losses generated by the underground economy. Virtually all types of hidden incomes arising from vast and widespread underground economic activities escape tax regulations and this should be considered as an important cause of widening of the Pakistanis' income gap over the last 20 years. It is true that as long as taxation exists, tax revenue losses will not completely disappear, but such losses can be reduced considerably by employing countermeasures effectively. It is high time that the government should start attacking underground economic activities to reduce tax revenue losses. This work cannot be done solely by reforming tax administration. In order to effectively reduce tax revenue losses, multi-sectoral participation and comprehensive co-ordination by and among different departments of the federal and provincial governments is much needed to curb underground economic activities. The introduction of feasible and effective countermeasures, requires the removal of causes that generate black money and taxpayers' non-compliance. The theory of economics of taxation tells us that critical factors determining the taxpayer's compliance level include benefit incentives, social pressures and a self-regulating mentality. THE ESTABLISHED CAUSES FOR TAXPAYERS' NON-COMPLIANCE ARE: -- selfish non-compliance, ie taxpayer makes a cost benefit analysis with regards to tax non-compliance and then decides that this course of action can generate greater net gains for him; -- non-compliance through ignorance, ie taxpayers do not intend to violate tax laws, but do so inadvertently because of unawareness of their tax obligations; and social non-compliance, ie taxpayers' behaviour is influenced by the attitude of the whole society towards approving tax avoidance and evasion. KEEPING IN VIEW THE ABOVE FACTORS, THE FOLLOWING MAJOR COUNTERMEASURES ARE SUGGESTED TO REDUCE TAX REVENUE LOSSES: 1. Removing the selfish non-compliant taxpayer should be tackled from economic perspective. The taxpayer must be considered as an economic person and the following formula should be applied: -- Expected returns of tax evasion = expected gains of tax evasion minus the expected cost of tax evasion Applying the above formula it is necessary to reduce taxpayers' economic earning arising from the underground economic activities and tax evasion. Even more important step would be to devise measures to enhance the taxpayers' cost of evasion. 2. Reducing the total burden of taxpayers in the public economy is both desirable and urgent. At present, the Pakistani tax burden level is not very high vis-Ã -vis tax evaders (instead they get tax amnesty schemes frequently to get their untaxed money whitened at a nominal rate) and the critical issue is to reform the entire tax collection system preventing tax dodgers from going underground. As regards the latter, the first important issue is to strengthen tax administration raising the potential of discovering non-compliant taxpayers. The present situation in Pakistan is very weak as far as effectiveness of tax administration is concerned. Besides raising evasion costs of taxpayers it is imperative to enhance the penalties of underground economic activities. 3. The most disturbing aspect of Pakistani tax system is weak enforcement, whereas FBR's perspective is that fault lies with tax legislation. It is a proven fact that the promulgated laws are not enforced effectively and whenever any shortcoming is pointed out, FBR stalwarts blame tax legislation. Evidence of this attitude is clearly reflected in promulgation of a new Income Tax Ordinance which is quite a useless venture having nothing new to ensure proper collection of taxes. Mere promulgation of law cannot ensure enhancement of tax revenues, the greater need is to reform tax structures and improve attitude of tax collectors. In Pakistan, one never hears of sending tax evaders to the prison for their illegal acts. This confirms extreme slackness on the part of tax administrators or their connivance with tax dodgers. Instead, punishment of tax evaders is restricted to nominal fines or penalties encouraging them to remain in the fold of the underground economy which is constantly expanding every day. Unwillingness of tax collectors to crack down on players in the underground economy needs thorough probe so that ways are suggested to ensure that in future this unwillingness/collaboration ceases to exist. 4. The predominant cause of non-compliance in Pakistan remains ignorance of law and social non-acceptance of tax obligations. The State has never bothered to promote tax culture through education of the masses who have never been informed of their duties towards the State, nor are they convinced of proper utilisation of taxes by the Government. There exists a relation of bad faith between the taxpayers and the State which needs to be addressed through a process of reconciliation. A new social contract is needed to convince the citizens that taxes paid by them are to be utilised exclusively for the benefit of the country and not for providing a life of luxury to rulers and the civil/military bureaucracy. The fundamental solution to promote tax culture is to popularise knowledge of the law through education, media and information services, enhancing the citizens' awareness of the need to tax payments raising the status to compliant taxpayers and thereby promoting the idea that paying taxes is an honour whereas evading taxes is a national disgrace. This is indeed a difficult task requiring a long period of time to change the people's perception but to do this work and do it as soon as possible is indispensable if we want to survive as a self-reliant nation. 5. For the task of attacking underground economy and forestall losses of tax revenue, the most important and radical channel is deepening of reforms. Conventional formulae and half-hearted attempts will not work. The State will have to flex its muscles to crack down heavily on the underground economy. All tax reforms, which are being initiated vigorously these days by obtaining loan from the foreign donors, will become useless unless black economy and its causes are eliminated once and for all. Our State is presently controlled by the corrupt politico-administrative structures where people having huge money power are the key players. How can the agenda of tax reform succeed in isolation? The need is to purge the society, make all financial transactions transparent, eliminate money power and corrupt administrative structures and only then colossal losses of tax revenue can be restrained. 6. Misplaced emphasis on tax reforms without tackling the principal issue of underground economy, will bring more hardships for the common people of Pakistan as in the frenzy of collecting more taxes the incidence of taxation would be shifted to the poor and the vulnerable ordinary people and those who have invincible money power (generator and protector of underground economy) will remain outside the ambit of tax obligations. 7. The State has to give up its policies of appeasement towards plunderers of national wealth and tax evaders. The foundations of corruption and rent-seeking activities of the State functionaries have to be destroyed with full force otherwise the tax reform financed by huge loans will be another national waste. The tax-to-GDP ratio can only be improved significantly if the process of economic reform, especially elimination of underground economy goes hand in hand with tax reform agenda. Once the State shows positive attitude by cracking down on underground economy and reducing all wasteful expenditures, the citizens will certainly reciprocate by paying their taxes diligently and honestly. This can be the only way to control and eliminate losses of tax revenue in Pakistan. In the past, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) was used for only victimising political opponents rather than cracking down on those who are engaged in massive tax frauds and evasions with the connivance of their friends in tax machinery. In the changed scenario, NAB should be asked to nab tax evaders and money launderers. How many holding key positions in State institutions are engaged in rent-seeking and corrupt activities is not a secret, but their declarations before tax authorities have never been made public. Those responsible for colossal revenue losses to national exchequer, tax evaders and their friends in tax machinery, should be punished and debarred from holding any public office. Unless this vital step is taken through a Tribunal headed by a Judge of Supreme Court after proper legislation to this effect, the dream of establishing a democratic polity will never become a reality in Pakistan, no matter how many elections are held. [Libertarian Republicans] Black Conservatives Critical of NAACP on Eve of Saturday's NAACP New York "Mobilization"

Black Conservatives Critical of NAACP on Eve of Saturday's NAACP New York "Mobilization"
NAACP Marches to Oppose Voter IDs, Purging Voter Lists of Dead or Unqualified Voters and the Enforcement of Laws Prohibiting Felons from Voting
NAACP Position "Demeans Blacks" Says Project 21 Spokesmen, "Does the NAACP Believe Blacks are Too Lazy, Ignorant or Incapable of Getting Valid Identification?"
Washington, D.C. - Black conservatives with the Project 21 black leadership network are calling out the alarmists and political schemers at the NAACP who are once again "crying wolf" -- claiming this time that the ballot integrity and voter-protection statues passed or under consideration by state legislatures across the nation are "the greatest coordinated legislative attack on voting rights since the dawn of Jim Crow."
"If you have to show an ID to check into the Holiday Inn Express, then it makes perfect sense that you should do the same when you are exercising the most sacred constitutional right -- the right to vote," said Project 21 spokeswoman Cherylyn LeBon Harley, a former senior counsel on the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee.
"The idea that showing identification poses a barrier to my constitutional right to vote is both ridiculous and insulting," added Project 21 spokeswoman Shelby Emmett, also a lawyer. "Does the NAACP believe blacks are too lazy, ignorant or incapable of getting valid identification? Is it a cost issue? Obtaining identification to vote costs money, but so does driving to the polls or taking an hour off of work to vote. Does the NAACP have any calls to action against gas stations or places of employment open during voting hours?"
With the endorsement of labor unions, partisan entities and liberal special interest groups, the NAACP is holding a December 10 march in New York City to draw attention to its "Stand for Freedom" campaign against voting rights protections at the state level. The march begins at New York City offices of Koch Industries (to single out limited-government donors Charles and David Koch) and will end at the United Nations. Next year, the NAACP reportedly will send a legal team to appeal their concerns about voting rights to the U.N.'s human rights bureaucracy in Geneva, Switzerland.
In a broadly-cast appeal, the NAACP claims that laws to require valid identification at polling places, the purging of voting lists to remove dead or disqualified voters and enforcing voting restrictions against felons are targeting "the voting rights of black voters, Latino voters, Asian American Voters, Native American Voters, as well as students and young people, seniors, working women, and immigrants of all colors... who are most likely to support workers rights, equal opportunity, women's rights, LBGT rights, environmental protection and peace." NAACP President Benjamin Todd Jealous, who made the Jim Crow analogy, further claims: "Voter ID laws are nothing but reincarnated poll taxes and literacy tests."
"It seems the NAACP conveniently forgets how their position demeans blacks," adds Project 21's Emmett. "We fought for over a hundred years not just to vote, but to have that vote count and mean something. How does allowing illegal immigrants and dead people to vote and other forms of voter fraud secure and protect black rights? Maybe if they viewed blacks as capable beings, obtaining identification wouldn't equal a 'poll tax' but would instead equal blacks protecting and defending their rights as Americans to a fair and transparent process open only to real, live American citizens. Maybe it's the NAACP that is instituting a new barrier to voting."
Project 21 members also dispute the earnestness of the NAACP's campaign considering its inaction regarding existing voting rights problems.
For instance, the "Stand for Freedom" online pledge calls on the U.S. Department of Justice "to fully enforce the Voting Rights Act." But unlike Project 21, the NAACP has not asked for a full investigation into why progress on a Voting Rights Act case against New Black Panther Party members regarding alleged polling place intimidation in Philadelphia in 2008 was reversed and an immediate settlement allegedly ordered by senior Obama Administration political appointees in 2009. In fact, J. Christian Adams, a former Justice Department attorney who worked on the case, testified before the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights that he was told by superiors that "NAACP members or staffers were [contacting the Justice Department and] asking, 'When is this case going to get dismissed?'"
Furthermore, the pledge calls for lawmakers to repeal "every voter suppression measure" and for the United Nations to "investigate and condemn voter suppression tactics in the United States." This past April, Lessadolla Sowers, a member of the executive committee of the NAACP chapter in Tunica County, Mississippi, was convicted by a jury on ten counts of fraudulently casting absentee ballots and sentenced to a five-year sentence for each count (to be served concurrently). Neither the national NAACP nor the Mississippi State Conference NAACP appear to have released statements on the verdict. Such vote fraud effectively cancels out legal votes, and examples such as this are motivating the legislation the NAACP is now publicly opposing.
"The NAACP has reached a new low with their recent attack on voter identification legislation. The NAACP should be protecting and upholding the constitutional rights of law-abiding black Americans to exercise their fullest privileges and rights as citizens. Instead, focusing on the rights of the criminal and other immoral issues have lead to the disfranchisement and decimation of black American communities across the country," said Project 21 spokesman Charles Butler, a talk radio host. "The reality is that part of being an American citizen is personal responsibility. Laws that state one should be a law-abiding citizen and provide some form of identification are needed. Most citizens possess valid identification of some type regardless of their socio-economic class."
Groups endorsing the NAACP's December 10 "mobilization" include the AFL-CIO, American Federation of Government Employees, the 1199 SEIU union local, Democratic Socialists of America, Al Sharpton's National Action Network and the Barack Obama Democratic Club. Another endorser is the Center for Community Change, which received $600,000 in 2008 from the George Soros-funded Open Society Foundation.

[SonsofLiberty] Federal Agents Demand Customer Lists From Mormon Food Storage Facility

Oath Keepers Alert: Federal Agents Demand Customer Lists From Mormon Food Storage Facility
http://oathkeepers.org/oath/2011/12/...rage-facility/
<http://oathkeepers.org/oath/wp-content/uploads/LDS-Cannery-Long-Term-Food-Storage-300x225.jpg>
Oath Keepers has learned that federal agents recently visited a Later Day Saints (Mormon) Church food storage cannery in Tennessee, demanding customer lists, wanting to know the identity of Americans who are purchasing food storage from the Mormons.
This incident was confirmed, in person, by Oath Keepers Tennessee Chapter President, Rand Cardwell.
Here is Rand's report:
"A fellow veteran contacted me concerning a new and disturbing development. He had been utilizing a Mormon cannery near his home to purchase bulk food supplies. The man that manages the facility related to him that federal agents had visited the facility and demanded a list of individuals that had been purchasing bulk food. The manager informed the agents that the facility kept no such records and that all transactions were conducted on a cash-and-carry basis. The agents pressed for any record of personal checks, credit card transactions, etc., but the manager could provide no such record. The agents appeared to become very agitated and after several minutes of questioning finally left with no information. I contacted the manager and personally confirmed this information.
This event points to a new level of federal government encroachment on the basic freedoms of the American people. Likewise, it points to a confused policy within federal agencies. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in their "Are You Ready?" guide to "In Depth Citizen Preparedness" recommends that citizens store emergency supplies, including bulk food, in the event of a natural disaster or man-made event (the new politically correct term applied to a terrorist attack). The FEMA guidance is spot-on as it allows individuals and families to be self-sufficient during an emergency situation.
And here in Tennessee, we just learned that Nashville Metro Public Health and the Tennessee Department of Health are conducting "door-to-door assessment of disaster preparedness … using a tool designed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to go door to door and check to see how disaster ready you are. .. in 30 neighborhoods in Davidson County [TN] that have been randomly selected to be the target of a door to door assessment." I have confirmed that that is a state run effort.
So on the one hand, government agencies both state and federal are urging you to be prepared and even checking up on you to see how prepared you are, and on the other hand, we now have federal agencies that are attempting to gather information on individuals that are following FEMA suggestions. What is the reasoning behind gathering this information? Are American citizens now being "listed" by DHS if they are simply following FEMA guidance and purchasing bulk food and emergency supplies for their families? It appears as so.
This should be a red flag to all Americans. Not unlike the "trip wires" identified in the Oath Keepers list of orders that will not be obeyed, this incident should be considered as further evidence that our federal government is out of control. What business is it of the government if any of us purchase and store bulk food? Answer: It is none of their damn business! Maybe during the next Katrina-type event federal agents will storm your home to take your food stores along with your firearms. We can only theorize as to the motives of the government for this type of "list" being developed, but it goes against the very fabric of what a free people should allow by our government." – Rand Cardwell.
Additional comments by Stewart Rhodes, Founder of Oath Keepers:
As Rand noted, it was fortunate that this particular cannery does not keep records of its customers. And Rand is correct that this is a very serious red flag. There's a very good reason why one of the top ten orders that active duty Oath Keepers will refuse to obey is "We will NOT obey any orders to confiscate the property of the American people, including food and other essential supplies." As our Declaration of Orders We Will Not Obey goes on to state:
"Deprivation of food has long been a weapon of war and oppression, with millions intentionally starved to death by fascist and communist governments in the 20th Century alone.
Accordingly, we will not obey or facilitate orders to confiscate food and other essential supplies from the people, and we will consider all those who issue or carry out such orders to be the enemies of the people."
If those who carry out such orders to confiscate food are enemies of the people, then that same label also fits anyone in the government compiling lists of Americans who store food. There is no legitimate reason for the Department of Homeland Security to compile such lists. Al Qaida suicide bombers are not known to store powdered milk and buckets of wheat. Nor are they known to store away dehydrated carrots and instant potatoes, or fruit punch mix for the kids. But the Mormons are known to do so, and so are many other Americans who have the common sense and maturity to take personal responsibility for ensuring that their families will have food, come what may.
It is part of Mormon Church religious doctrine to store food for hard times and emergencies, with a recommendation that each family store a year's worth of basic dry goods along with three months worth of store-bought canned and boxed foods. To facilitate that practice, the Mormon Church runs its own food storage canneries selling powdered milk, wheat, flour, rice and beans, sugar, salt, and various other dry goods either in bulk 50 lb bags or in #10 cans for long term food storage (up to 30 years for some items). These Church canneries also often sell food storage items to non-church members, seeing it as both morally right and prudent to help their neighbors store food, whatever their faith. The cannery in Tennessee that was "visited" by federal agents follows that practice of helping the general public become better prepared.
So why do federal agents want to know who is storing away long-term food storage? We suspect it is for the following reasons:
1. DHS/FEMA wants to know which Americans have food storage so the federal government can at some future point confiscate that food. Just as with lists of gun owners, compiling such lists is the first step toward future confiscation.
2. DHS wants to identify those Americans who are "switched on" and squared away enough to actually store food for coming hard times (such as during an economic collapse). That population of awake, aware, and prepared Americans poses a "threat" to whatever DHS and its masters have in store for the American people, and as Joseph Stalin so ably demonstrated, one of the easiest ways to subjugate defiant people is to confiscate their food and starve them into submission.
The federal government already tipped their hand by sending the FBI to military surplus stores (as we reported), gun stores, and pawn shops to encourage those businesses to spy on their customers who buy MRE's (Meals Ready to Eat), bipods, "night flashlights", high capacity magazines, rifle bipods, and bulk ammo. Maybe some of you fooled yourselves into thinking there might be some legitimate reason for them to track purchases of such items. But powdered milk and wheat berries? Those are hardly items that could be used in a terrorist attack. It must be the storage of food itself that the feds now find so offensive and so "dangerous."
And while the door-to-door preparedness assessments in Tennessee appears to be well intended (and we spoke with a friendly state preparedness officer who said it was motivated by the recent natural disasters in Tennessee), Americans are well justified in being concerned about such efforts and how that information may be used in the future, in light of these other well documented and confirmed incidents of federal law enforcement collecting information on those who purchase preparedness items and indicating that the purchases of those items may be "indicators of terrorist activity."
If you are one of the many Americans who still have on rose-colored glasses, or who still have your head buried in the sand (or stuck somewhere else warm and dark), it is time to pull your head out and face the reality of what the federal government is telling you by the actions of its agents. Those actions show both what they fear and their intent. What they fear are prepared, equipped, and "switched on" Americans, and their intent is to identify who they are, where they are, and then plan on dealing with them when the time comes. And rest assured that time will come. The recent U.S. Senate passage of S. 1867, which authorizes military detention and trial of U.S, citizens under the international laws of war (as if we were conquered Iraq or Afghanistan) is also an expression of their intent, and their contempt for the Bill of Rights.
Clearly, in light of the above, if you purchase food storage, along with any other preparedness items, you should be concerned about those purchases being tracked and your name winding up on some government list. But don't let that stop you from storing food and other essential supplies, and don't let this disturbing incident keep you from using your local Mormon cannery to do so. You need to get prepared. But do it while following the advice of James Wesley, Rawles over at www.survivalblog.com, who repeatedly urges his readers to "think OPSEC!" – if at all possible, buy with cash and pick it up in person, just like the customers of this particular cannery did, which left the "agitated" agents empty handed and frustrated. Good. That is as it should be. Don't make it easy on them. And if you have not yet begun to store food, now is certainly a good time to start. You're going to need it. Time is short, and you need to be prepared for what is coming. "Are You Ready?" indeed. – Stewart Rhodes

**JP** Letter to Editor - Picture Culture
Dear Join Pakistan
LETTER TO EDITOR
December 10th, 2011
Picture Culture
A picture on page-5 of “The News” 10 December shows the Saudi Ambassador Abdulaziz bin Ibrahim Al-Ghadeer calling on Senator Muhammad Ali Durrani. Two things caught my immediate attention. First, the ambassador looked real smart attired in a designer’s western suit complete with what must have been a pure silk stripped necktie with a matching kerchief. Second, the presence of a framed picture of the Saudi monarch perched conspicuously on a table that seemed to have been placed deliberately between the visitor and the senator. There was also a standing standard in the background that looked like the Saudi flag. The senator had certainly created an aura of Saudi atmosphere for the occasion. Somehow it all reminded me of a comedy movie “Hotel Sahara” of my young days. The hilarious story of the film revolved around the Second World War hotel in a city of African desert which came under the alternate occupation of the Allied and Ax is forces a number of times. At the advent of each occupation, whether by the Allieds or the Axis, the hotel manager had to change in anticipation the entire décor of the hotel, the pictures (of Hitler, Mussolini, Churchill or Roosevelt) and the countries’ flags and buntings etc. to welcome the occupying force. The tantrums and the panic were real hilarious when the occupying troops turned out to be other than what the manger expected and everything had to be altered covertly to meet the changed situation without its being detected by the invader.
Pray the Senator doesn’t face a situation ever like that.
