Obama Administration Wants Supreme Court to Allow Colleges to Discriminate Against Non-Minorities Via Affirmative Action

by Scotty Starnes

Obama enjoys using the word fair until it comes to college admissions. Instead of fairly picking students based on merit, the Obama administration is pressuring the Supreme Court to allow colleges to discriminate against non-minorities in the so-called  liberal name of "diversity." What else should we expect from the first Affirmative Action president?

From WaPo:

The Obama administration urged the Supreme Court on Monday to continue to allow universities to take race into account when assembling their student bodies, saying the government has a "vital interest" in drawing its leaders from a diverse pool of college graduates.

The administration supported the University of Texas, whose policy of considering race as one factor in deciding who will be admitted to the flagship university in Austin is being challenged.

The case will be one of the most important of the court's coming term — underscored by more than 50 friend-of-the-court briefs filed by outside groups and individuals.

The Supreme Court said nine years ago that universities had a legitimate interest in building diverse classes and provided guidelines for administrators: An applicant's status could not be automatically boosted because of his or her race, but race could be one factor in a holistic review of the person's qualifications.

Opponents of affirmative action have urged the court — now with justices more averse to race-conscious solutions — to reconsider the 2009 decision in Grutter v. Bollinger, or at least to find that UT's process falls outside those strict standards.

The policy is being challenged by a white student, Abigail Fisher, who said she was rejected by the university while less-qualified minorities were admitted, violating her constitutional rights. She graduated from Louisiana State University in the spring.

Dem Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. has bipolar disorder

by Dr. Eowyn

Jesse Jackson Jr. (left) and Sr. (right)

Only in politics can an employee be absent for more than a month without telling his boss why, and yet continue to draw a paycheck.

That employee is Illinois Democratic Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr., son of the race mongering Rev. Jesse Jackson. Jr's boss are the Chicago voters who had voted him to represent them in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Jr. hasn't been seen on Capitol Hill or anywhere since June 10.

On June 26, his office finally issued a statement that Jackson Jr. was suffering from "exhaustion" and would take a "medical leave of absence" to receive treatment for the condition. No date was given for his return.

On July 11, Jackson's office claimed the Congressman is being treated for a "mood disorder" at an undisclosed inpatient facility.

More weeks passed.

On July 27, National Enquirer reports that a source close to the Jackson family revealed that "At first we thought he was simply exhausted. But after five weeks of extensive evaluation, doctors diagnosed Jesse Jr. with bipolar disorder."

The next day, Jason Keyser of the Associated Press reports that Jackson is being treated in the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota for depression and a "gastrointestinal issue."

Keyser notes that the announcement was made by the Mayo Clinic late Friday during the national broadcast of the Olympics' opening ceremony, when public attention was more likely fixed half a world away. As in the past, the statement gave scant details -- no information on the nature of Jackson's depression, where he was being treated prior to arriving at the Mayo Clinic or his progress. Nor is there word on how long Jackson might remain at the Mayo Clinic.

Then on August 13, 2012, the story once again changed. The Mayo Clinic now admits that Jackson Jr. doesn't have a depression -- he has bipolar disorder.

In other words, a supermarket tabloid, the National Enquirer, scooped the MSM by more than 2 weeks! The Enquirer also broke the story of former Democratic senator and VP candidate John Edwards' adultery and "love child" when the MSM simply refused to investigate or even report on his tawdry extramarital affair. Of course, if Edwards were a Republican, the regular media would have been all over the story from day one.

The timing of Jackson's medical leave has raised questions, in part because Jackson is facing an ethics investigation in the U.S. House connected to imprisoned former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

Bipolar and depression are both mood disorders. So what's a mood disorder?

According to the National Institutes on Health (NIH), a 2005 National Comorbidity Survey-Replication study found that about 20.9 million American adults, or 9.5% of the population ages 18 and older, have mood disorders. These include major depressive disorder; dysthymic disorder (a chronic, mild depression); and bipolar disorder (also called manic depression). Major depressive disorder is, by itself, the leading cause of disability among Americans age 15–44, according to the World Health Organization.

The American Psychological Association's Diagnostic Statistical Manual differentiates between Axis I vs. Axis II disorders.

Axis II are personality disorders like Obama's Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). Bipolar disorder is something more serious, an Axis I disorder. Axis I disorders are clinical and include the major mental disorders, including schizophrenia and bipolar.

Unlike personality disorders like NPD which are treated with talk therapy, mood disorders are considered by the psychological profession to be forms of "severe mental illness," and so are treated with chemical intervention or medication.

The National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) defines "severe mental illness" as:

  • A mental, behavioral, or emotional disorder (excluding developmental and substance use disorders)
  • Diagnosable currently or within the past year
  • Of sufficient duration to meet diagnostic criteria specified within the 4th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV)
  • Resulting in serious functional impairment, which substantially interferes with or limits one or more major life activities.

According to the NIH's National Institute on Mental Illness, nearly 4.5% of US adults in 2008 are severely mentally ill. Among them, 2.6% of US adults in a 12-month period have bipolar disorder, 82.9% of these (or 2.2% of US adults) are severely bipolar. Altogether, 3.9% of US adults have a lifetime prevalence of bipolar.

So what exactly is bipolar disorder? From mentalhealth.com:

Bipolar I Disorder is one of the most severe forms of mental illness and is characterized by recurrent episodes of mania and (more often) depression. The condition has a high rate of recurrence and if untreated, it has an approximately 15% risk of death by suicide. It is the third leading cause of death among people aged 15-24 years, and is the 6th leading cause of disability (lost years of healthy life) for people aged 15-44 years in the developed world. Bipolar I Disorder affects both sexes equally in all age groups and its worldwide prevalence is approximately 3-5%.

Bipolar I Disorder may develop psychotic symptoms. [Psychosis is a loss of contact with reality. Psychotic symptoms include hallucination, visual or auditory; delusions; and impaired cognitive functioning] The psychotic symptoms in Bipolar I Disorder only occur during severe manic, mixed or depressive episodes. In contrast, the psychotic symptoms in Schizophrenia can occur when there is no mania or depression. Poor recovery is more common after psychosis.

Since antidepressant medication can trigger mania, antidepressant medication should always be combined with a mood-stablizer or antipsychotic medication to prevent mania.

Research has shown that the most effective treatment is a combination of supportive psychotherapy, psychoeducation, and the use of a mood-stabilizer (often combined with an antipsychotic medication). There is no research showing that any form of psychotherapy is an effective substitute for medication.

See also Wikipedia's entry on bipolar disorder.

But the anti-depressant and anti-psychotic drugs used to treat bipolar disorder carry their own horrible side-effects and risks, including cardiometabolic toxicity. The word "cardiometabolic" refers to heart disease and metabolic disorders such as diabetes and hypertension.

To conclude, the Mayo Clinic's admission that Jesse Jackson Jr. has bipolar disorder is serious news and should have been widely publicized.

Put simply, this means a serving member of Congress is severely mentally ill and is being treated with heavy-duty anti-depressant and anti-psychotic drugs with scary side-effects. Those who are bipolar become grandiose (i.e., hyper narcissistic) in their manic phases. Not a good thing for someone who wields political power. And yet, no one in Jackson Jr's Chicago district or anywhere else in America is demanding that this severely mentally ill man resign from office.

P.S. Conservatives and Republicans may have dodged the bullet when Newt Gingrich didn't win the requisite number of GOP primaries to be the party's presidential nominee, because there is credible information out there that Gingrich is bipolar. His mother was bipolar and there is a big hereditary component to the disorder.

16 states begin rationing Medicaid prescription drugs

by Dr. Eowyn

Medicaid is pure welfare, as opposed to Medicare that is at least partially funded by FICA. Medicaid was always intended to take care of the downtrodden and unfortunate but has now ballooned into health care for all.

Obamacare expands the Medicaid rolls by shoving more people onto the public dime. Medicaid alone is now responsible for a quarter of many State budgets and continues to financially drain federal and state government coffers at an alarming rate. Worst of all, just like Medicare, Medicaid distorts the insurance market, driving medical prices up for every single individual. [Source]

But state governments aren't stupid. Already strapped for cash, with some state governments in undeclared bankruptcy, 16 states have taken preemptive action by trying to contain Medicaid costs via rationing the program's prescription drugs.

Melanie Hunter reports for CNSNews.com, July 30, 2012:

Sixteen states have set a limit on the number of prescription drugs they will cover for Medicaid patients, according to Kaiser Health News.

Seven of those states, according to Kaiser Health News, have enacted or tightened those limits in just the last two years.

Medicaid is a federal program that is carried out in partnership with state governments. It forms an important element of President Barack Obama's health-care plan because under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act--AKA Obamcare--a larger number of people will be covered by Medicaid, as the income cap is raised for the program.

With both the expanded Medicaid program and the federal subsidy for health-care premiums that will be available to people earning up to 400 percent of the poverty level, a larger percentage of the population will be wholly or partially dependent on the government for their health care under Obamacare than are now.

In Alabama, Medicaid patients are now limited to one brand-name drug, and HIV and psychiatric drugs are excluded.

Illinois has limited Medicaid patients to just four prescription drugs as a cost-cutting move, and patients who need more than four must get permission from the state.

Speaking on C-SPAN's Washington Journal on Monday, Phil Galewitz, staff writer for Kaiser Health News, said the move "only hurts a limited number of patients."

"Drugs make up a fair amount of costs for Medicaid. A lot of states have said a lot of drugs are available in generics where they cost less, so they see this sort of another move to push patients to take generics instead of brand," Galewitz said.

"It only hurts a limited number of patients, 'cause obviously it hurts patients who are taking multiple brand name drugs in the case of Alabama, Illinois. Some of the states are putting the limits on all drugs. It's another place to cut. It doesn't hurt everybody, but it could hurt some," he added.

Galewitz said the move also puts doctors and patients in a "difficult position."

"Some doctors I talked to would work with patients with asthma and diabetes, and sometimes it's tricky to get the right drugs and the right dosage to figure out how to control some of this disease, and just when they get it right, now the state is telling them that, 'Hey, you're not going to get all this coverage. You may have to switch to a generic or find another way,'" he said.

Arkansas, California, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and West Virginia have all placed caps on the number of prescription drugs Medicaid patients can get.

"Some people say it's a matter of you know states are throwing things up against the wall to see what might work, so states have tried, they've also tried formularies where they'll pick certain brand name drugs over other drugs. So states try a whole lot of different things. They're trying different ways of paying providers to try to maybe slow the costs down," Galewitz said.

"So it seems like Medicaid's sort of been one big experiment over the last number of years for states to try to control costs, and it's an ongoing battle, and I think drugs is just now one of the … latest issues. And it's a relatively recent thing, only in the last 10 years have we really seen states put these limits on monthly drugs," he added.

Deconstructing Dr. Paul

Deconstructing Dr. Paul
By Philip Giraldi August 12, 2012, 7:20 AM

Even though Ron Paul will not be the next president of the United States, some pundits are now beginning to wake up to the fact that his campaign gave birth to an awareness among many voters, young and old, that there is something very wrong with America's two party political system.  Paul's ideas about constitutionalism, non-intervention, and the rights and responsibilities of both government and the citizen will not go away and the presence of many Paulistas at state and local levels suggests that the principles that he promoted will be with us for years to come if the institutional GOP is unable to stamp them out.

Inevitably, the attempt to destroy an idea whose time has come has produced a lot of silly commentary attempting to demonstrate that what Dr. Paul stood for is unrealistic and possibly even eccentric.  A recent piece by Matt Johnson, "The Rest of the World: Ron Paul Revelations," seeks to dismantle the Ron Paul legacy.  Johnson opines "…it's a dismal reminder of how frivolous American politics can be. Though some of his supporters fancy themselves 'revolutionaries,' Ron Paul is one of the most reactionary candidates in recent history, and he should be consigned to obscurity as soon as possible."

How does one come to that conclusion?  Well, Johnson, who has a bachelor's degree in political science, appears to be something of a self-designated foreign-policy expert. He zeros in on what Dr. Paul would do internationally, noting that
Osama Bin Laden would still be alive and the CIA would be dead. The United States would no longer be a member of NATO or the United Nations. Federal foreign aid for the victims of disasters such as the Asian, Haitian and Japanese earthquakes would be rescinded… The Iranian nuclear weapons program would be given an idiotic American blessing. Iraq would still be privately held by a band of murders and sadists known as the Ba'ath Party, and they'd have Kuwait under their bloody thumbs. Yugoslavia would have been ethnically "cleansed" and absorbed by Greater Serbia. American aircraft would not have protected innocent civilians in Libya. And our present conversation about Syria would be reduced to a series of sighs and shoulder shrugs… Ron Paul's vision for the United States is dank, self-serving rot masquerading as 'freedom.' The freedom that Ron Paul advocates is the freedom to deny the very existence of international obligations. It's the freedom to abandon our allies and help our enemies. It's the freedom to permit genocide, sectarian madness, and mass suffering without even a hint of self-criticism.
Wow. Dr. Paul's denunciation of secret government and unconstitutional death squads somehow translates for Johnson, who is a self-described Obama supporter, into being soft on terrorists.  NATO, which has no raison d'etre whatsoever, presumably should hang around to fight future wars of choice and the US should happily surrender its national sovereignty to something called the UN. Iran, which has no weapons program, should be attacked anyway and more wars in the Balkans, Middle East, and Africa should be initiated by the president even though he has no constitutional authority to do so and even when there is no conceivable U.S. interest in what is taking place. Per Johnson, America's "international obligations" include becoming both the world policeman and the first source for alleviation of suffering.

Johnson might usefully recall that Dr. Paul's objection to "foreign entanglements" is sound advice coming originally from George Washington's Farewell Address. He might also want to do a little more reading on what is happening in Syria as it is precisely outside interference that has created a crisis that is very close to civil war.  Johnson appears to think that a policy of non-intervention means non-engagement with the rest of the world.  Quite the contrary, a United States that is not involved in fighting one quarter of the human race might actually find that its interactions with foreigners go a lot better.  A restrained and proper international role for the U.S. would mean no budget deficits, no unnecessary wars, and quite likely no terrorists targeting Americans.

We live in the age of Ron Paul

We live in the age of Ron Paul
By Juan Williams - 08/13/12 05:00 AM ET

Last year in this column I wrote: "If you have not been paying attention, it is time to look around and realize that we are living in the political age of Rep. Ron Paul."

The first section of the Wikipedia page entry for the Tea Party Movement even quotes a sentence from that column, where I argued the Tea Party dynamic that won the House majority for the GOP in 2010 "grew largely out of the ashes of (Paul's) 2008 presidential campaign" by emphasizing "limited government and a return to constitutional principles."

Now, the 76-year-old Texan is retiring at the end of this Congress after 12 terms in the House of Representatives.

During his latest run for the Republican presidential nomination, Paul tangled with Mitt Romney, particularly over civil liberties.

But unlike other candidates, he did not attack Romney harshly.

Paul and Romney remain friendly but Paul was never on the short list -- or any other list -- of people who were considered as Romney's running mate.

Just last month, well after Romney had wrapped up enough delegates to win the Republican race, Paul continued to try to get enough unpledged GOP delegates to commit to vote for him so he could get his own name placed in nomination.

The idea was to give him a moment of national recognition at the Tampa convention and assure him one final platform before a national audience.

But the effort failed.

Now he will leave the national political scene quietly, although he probably had a hand in getting a coveted convention speech slot for his son, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky).

Sen. Paul may give his dad a final shout out from the podium .

Ron Paul deserves more.

In presidential debates, and until his last days in Congress, Paul has continued to stir revolution in the Republican Party by fighting the GOP establishment.

During the debates, Paul got Republican audiences to applaud his calls for legalization of drugs, ending criminalization of prostitution and getting American troops out of endless wars around the globe.

His daring positions won raves from young people, a legion of online fans and contributors while reviving the libertarian wing of the GOP and forcing open the doors of the party to Tea Party energy.

Despite those accomplishments, the Republican establishment continues to treat Paul like a crazy uncle.

But Paul is a persistent politician.

Before the House adjourned for the August recess, Paul won a vote to have an audit of the Federal Reserve.

There has never been an audit of the Fed, and it is not likely to happen now because the bill is going nowhere in the Senate.

Still, that was a revolutionary act against Wall Street, the nation's banking establishment and the Washington politicians they bankroll.

Every House Republican, except for one, voted for the bill. Eighty-nine Democrats broke with their party's leadership and voted for it.

Paul has long argued that the Federal Reserve's role in monetary policy is at the heart of the nation's economic problems.

He made this a central part of his presidential campaign in 2008, and in 2012. He even authored a book called "End the Fed" in 2009.

The global financial scandal surrounding the manipulation of the LIBOR interest rates is causing some economic observers to take a second look at Paul's critique of the Fed's policies.

As a member of the House Financial Services Committee, Paul's cross-examinations of Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke have become very popular on YouTube, with some earning hundreds of thousands of views.

Paul got to question Bernanke one last time at a committee hearing last month and brought a rare passion to discussions of monetary policy.

"It's the destruction of the currency that destroys the middle class," he said. "There's a principle of free market thinking that says (by) destroying the value of the currency through inflation, you transfer the wealth from the middle class and it gravitates to the very wealthy. If you like big government, (you) love the Fed.

Just as he took on the powers at the Federal Reserve, Paul has taken on the powerful and the rich who support unquestioned spending on the military budget.

Cutting the Pentagon's budget was once dismissed as a lunacy by the political establishment, and especially Republicans. But it has become an increasingly popular position in Congress during Paul's tenure.

A July survey from the Center for Public Integrity revealed that 80 percent of voters in congressional districts represented by Democrats favor lowering defense spending.

And in a tribute to the power of Ron Paul, 74 percent of voters in districts with Republican representatives now also say they want to lower the defense budget.

Paul's colleagues in the House are reflecting this new attitude about defense spending. In a surprise move, the GOP-controlled House passed a defense appropriations bill in July that contained an amendment to reduce the military budget by $1.1 billion.

The amendment passed by a substantial majority, 247-167. Eighty-nine Republicans joined 158 Democrats voting in favor of it.

One of the amendment's authors, Rep. Mick Mulvaney (R-S.C.), even credits Paul with helping to shift the debate so that the amendment could be passed.

As he leaves the political scene, there is no doubt that cranky Ron Paul has made his mark on American politics.

We will be living in the age of Ron Paul for many years to come.
