Ohio woman sentenced in Hurricane Katrina scam | |||||
HAMILTON, Ohio (AP) -- Prosecutors say a woman whose Louisiana home was destroyed in 2005 by Hurricane Katrina cheated Ohio's welfare system out of $13,000. Authorities say Teri Rivarde moved to Ohio after the storm and falsified paperwork to qualify for food stamps and Medicaid benefits. Prosecutors say Rivarde lied about her husband being unemployed when he actually worked as an engineer and earned $100,000 in an eight-month span. Rivarde was sentenced Monday to six months in jail, fined $500 and ordered to repay the $13,000. The 47-year-old Rivarde apologized to a judge in Butler County in southwest Ohio. She was convicted in July of grand theft and two counts of tampering with records. Prosecutors say a caseworker discovered the falsehoods by comparing records with other Ohio agencies. © 2010 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
