Cody Green was a witty and determined kid, who loved his family, the Cub Scouts, and the US Marines. It was Cody's ambition to someday join that renowned Corps.
However, Cody was diagnosed with leukemia shortly before his second birthday, and spent the next ten years of his life fighting the disease. He never complained, and like a true Scout, tried to help others first.
When his mom was seriously injured after a stage collapsed underneath her, Cody was there for her. She had to have 30 staples in her skull and steel rods inserted in her legs, and had trouble moving around or take care of herself. Although he himself was in such pain that he often had to stop and throw up, he helped his mother with her chores, even washing her hair for her. As Mrs Green explained,
Cody's struggle inspired local Marines, who said "he's fought as hard as any Marine has." They honored Cody by making him an honorary US Marine. They planned a full ceremony with a color guard presentation, but Cody's immune system wouldn't allow for that.
Last month Cody was rushed to the hospital with a fungus infection of his brain. He had beaten back cancer, but his weakened immune system couldn't handle a common household fungus.
Marine Sergeant Mark Dolfini, who lived nearby, was notified that Cody was dying. He rushed to the hospital in full dress blues & sword, and stood guard all night long, for eight hours straight, until Cody passed the next day.
The Marine Corp's website states that the title of 'Honorary Marine' reinforces the special bond between the American people and the Corps by 'recognizing individuals in the civilian community who have made extraordinary contributions to the Marine Corps. There can be no better recipient of this honor than Cody Green.

"When I started walking again after the incident, he was so worried about me, saying 'you need to keep your feet up Mom! You have to watch your step.' He never complained, he never said 'why me?' or 'I don't want to do this.' If he got sick, he would finish and say 'I'm sorry' because you were holding the bucket for him. I always told him that he had nothing to be sorry about."
