An Aeromexico plane flying to Mexico City from Paris had to land late Sunday afternoon at Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport in Montreal to remove a passenger whose name is on the U.S. no-fly list, CBC News has learned.

The man was escorted off the plane and taken into custody for questioning by the RCMP.

All 150 passengers were removed from the Boeing 767 and searched. An airport official said the plane was still at the airport and it wasn't immediately known when it would be allowed to continue to its destination.

An airport spokeswoman declined to comment and referred CBC News to the Canada Border Services Agency, which has yet to respond.

The U.S. Transportation Security Administration told the CBC in an email that it knows that Aeromexico Flight 006 was diverted to Montreal "due to a person of interest."

"Officers removed the individual from the flight and arrested the person on an outstanding warrant," spokeswoman Lauren Gaches said in the email.

"The United States' ability to refuse entry into its territory of any flight it deems to present a threat to its security is recognized by numerous countries and is consistent with international agreements," she said without providing further details.

MONTREAL, CANADA (BNO NEWS) -- An Aeromexico flight from Paris to Mexico City was diverted to the Canadian city of Montreal on Sunday following a security incident, a BNO News source confirmed.

Aeromexico flight 06, operated by a Boeing 767-300, was diverted to Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport after being denied access to U.S. airspace, a source told BNO News. One person - who may have been on the no-fly list - was taken into custody aboard the plane, the source said.

A witness on board the plane, Mexican senator Francisco Javier Castellon, said the passenger arrested was an Arab-looking man and was on seat 23H.

The plane, which departed Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport at 10.31 a.m. CEST (4.31 a.m. EDT), was carrying 150 passengers.

A spokeswoman for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police confirmed it was at the airport to assist, but refused to provide further information. Representatives from the Montreal airport, other Canadian agencies, and the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) were not immediately available to comment.

Further details were not immediately available.

MONTREAL - A transatlantic flight made an unscheduled stop at Montreal's Pierre Elliott Trudeau airport Sunday night after it was discovered that one of the passengers on board was on a no-fly list.

Airport authorities confirmed around 8 p.m. that the passenger was removed from the Aeromexico aircraft and detained by Canada Border Services agents.

It remains unclear how the individual was able to board the aircraft, which took off from Paris earlier in the day and was en route to Mexico.

The remaining passengers were all asked to deplane and were searched. The aircraft then resumed its trip.

Man arrested on warrant after flight is diverted

WASHINGTON (AP) -- U.S. officials say an Aero Mexico flight from Paris to Mexico City was diverted to Montreal when the U.S. denied the flight access to its airspace after a person named in an outstanding warrant was reported aboard.

The person, whom officials did not identify, was removed from the plane by authorities on Sunday and arrested at Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport.

A spokeswoman for the Transportation Security Administration in Washington, Lauren Gaches, says other passengers on Aero Mexico Flight 006 from Charles De Gaulle Airport to Mexico City International Airport were re-screened and allowed to reboard the flight.

As a matter of policy, the TSA does not confirm or deny whether an individual appears on a government watch list.

Man arrested on warrant after flight diverted

WASHINGTON — An Aeromexico flight from Paris to Mexico City was diverted to Montreal on Sunday when the U.S. denied the flight access to its airspace after a man named in an outstanding warrant was reported aboard, an official said.

The man, whose name officials did not release, was removed from the plane at Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport and arrested, said Lauren Gaches, a spokeswoman for the Transportation Security Administration.

Other passengers on Aeromexico Flight 006 from Charles De Gaulle Airport to Mexico City International Airport were re-screened and allowed to re-board the flight, Gaches said.

As a matter of policy, the TSA does not confirm or deny whether a person appears on a government watch list.

"The United States' ability to refuse entry into its territory of any flight it deems to present a threat to its security is recognized by numerous countries and is consistent with international agreements," Gaches said.

Montreal airport official Marie-Claude Desgagnes said the plane was allowed to take off shortly after 10 p.m. EDT. It was expected to arrive in Mexico City about 3:30 a.m. EDT.

TSA referred questions to Aeromexico and Canadian authorities.

A spokesman for Canada Border Services, Dominque McNeely, said there was not an incident on the aircraft and that law-enforcement officials boarded the plane around 2:30 p.m. and took the suspect into custody.

"The flight landed and we had excellent cooperation with everyone involved," he said.

McNeely said the man was being detained in Montreal and a detention hearing would be held within the next 48 hours.

A Royal Canadian Mounted Police official said officers assisted Canada Border Services but declined to provide further details.

In Mexico City, a woman who answered the phone at Aeromexico late Sunday said no one was available to talk to the news media.

Associated Press writer Rob Gillies in Toronto contributed to this report.
