What We're Doing Right Now in the Horn of Africa
IRD and its partners – including individuals like you – are improving access to safe drinking water and sanitation facilities for 24,000 individuals in Dollo Ado, Ethiopia, near where the borders of Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia meet. IRD is working with a local organization to bring water to villages that have not seen rain in more than two years. The nearest water source for some villagers is 12 miles away. IRD is also preparing to expand its relief operations into Somalia. Reports from Our Field Staff Scott Webb, IRD's relief officer in Dollo Ado, Ethiopia, reports "This morning when we woke up, five different villages in Dollo Ado were completely out of water. By this afternoon, they will have water. IRD can hold its head high that we did the right thing today and acted quickly in an emergency to save lives." Read more about Scott's observations. Sagal Mohamoud, IRD's country representative in Somalia, reports from Banadir Hospital in Mogadishu "Many emotions went through me on the sight of this sea of desperate sick people. I felt a sense of helplessness that I never felt before. IRD is finding how best we might be able to support the important and life-saving work they are doing at the hospital." Read more about Sagal's observations. Why This Work Is So Important Safe water, sanitation, and hygiene are critical for preventing secondary causes of death and illness related to malnutrition. Malnourished individuals are especially susceptible to diseases such as measles, cholera, malaria, and respiratory infections, due to their compromised immune systems. The more we do now to address these basic needs, the better able people will be to survive the crisis. Get Involved Together, we are saving lives.
