This is a prime example of the PPP led Sikha Shahi. The simple principle to follow should be that if a Govt. owned enterprise cannot sustain itself then it should be summarily disbanded. There is no Govt. owned Radio or TV channel in UK.  BBC is a commercial co-op and I think is no longer assisted by the Govt. US Govt. can afford to run its own Radio but does not own a TV channel. All commercially oriented industries or services must pull their own weight or be dispensed with. PIA, WAPDA, Railways, Steel Mill, Heavy Mechanical Complex etc, can claim the same treatment and ask for direct taxation to reward their incompetency, inefficiency and corruption as the PBC. There should be a 200% tax on every recharging of a cell phone and a 10 Million tax on every new car, 1 million on every motor cycle and a 100% surcharge on every air travel ticket and hotel room rent, so that all these white elephants can be kept alive. All Senators, MNAs and MPAs should, of course, be exempted for life from all such taxes for the incomparable service that they are rendering to the Awam. If still more money is needed to recruit more relatives and friends as CEOs, Consultants and Advisers, then a 500% tax should be imposed on all Restaurant bills.

Dear Brig. Khawaja Naseem Iqbal(Retd)

LETTER TO EDIROR
February 24th, 2012

Radio Tax

A parliamentary committee has recommended imposition of 2% Radio Tax on every recharge of the mobile phones and Rs. 30,000 to 40,000 on the purchase of new cars.  It will make the PBC self reliant and stand on its own feet, says the committee.  What a self reliance, one wonders, if it has to come through such an enforced indirect taxation on the hapless people of this country?  Who in any case in this age of cable and a horde of TV channels listens to the Radio Pakistan even on their car radios where a plethora of FM channels with much more entertaining programmes are readily available?  PTV is also similarly charging compulsorily all electricity consumers billions every month and yet cannot compete with the private TV channels in the quality of the programmes offered by it. Should the government not make the PIA, WAPDA, Pakistan Railways and the Steel Mills also self reliant by incorporating similar taxes on, say, every litre of fuel and every ounce of S ugar, vegetable oil, and atta.? And, if by any chance or accident the rulers and the legislators also wish to improve the self-reliance of these and other such government run organizations, they could contribute a Rupee One per head per year also?
