Iran with Ambassador John W. Limbert. The Ambassador was the first
ever Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Iran in 2009, that is, he
was appointed to a newly created position which put a higher priority
on Iran than it had had previously, and he is currently a professor at
the U.S. Naval Academy. His background is notable also for his having
been, at an earlier stage of his diplomatic career, one of the Embassy
captives during the Iran hostage crisis. The Ambassador points out
that what the U.S. is doing with regard to Iran amounts to a policy of
regime change, even if that is not what we say we want. He notes,
moreover, the contradiction in our condemnation of terrorism generally
with our seeming inability to describe the assassination of Iranian
scientists as terrorism. He's extremely reasonable, well spoken, and
hopes -- as we all do -- that U.S.-Iranian differences can be resolved
peacefully. He is, nevertheless, worried about the danger that the
current situation could lead to an accidental war, more worried than
he has been in the past.
