There is no First Amendment without the Second Amendment.
Alan Caruba reminds us that the first Americans won their independence from England with the force of arms. It was, in fact, a British effort in 1775 to confiscate military arms they believed were stored in Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts, which sparked the Revolutionary War.
The Founding Fathers were so aware of the need for an armed citizenry that, after ensuring freedom of religion, speech, press and the right to peacefully assemble in the First Amendment, the Second guaranteed their right to bear arms.
That right is crucial because it's the last line that stands between the people and a tyrannical government. Indeed, wherever authoritarian regimes were established in the last century, they first took away this right and then proceeded to kill, with impunity and abandonment, those deemed enemies of the state.
That is why the right to bear arms is the bete noir of the Left, who have tried for years to chip away at the Second Amendment. At this point in American history, the Obama administration constitutes a threat to the Constitution in general and the Second Amendment in particular.
But more and more Americans are taking matters into their own hands.
At the end of 2011, the FBI released data showing that violent crime in the United States fell 6.4% in the first half of this year compared to the same time period in 2010., and property crime also fell 3.7%. But gun sales have gone up ever since Obama entered the White House.
More than 80,000,000 Americans are gun owners.
And the numbers have increased with the new year. As an example, it was reported on February 19, 2012, that applications for a Georgia Weapon Carry license are rising at such a rate that applications could nearly double 2011's numbers by the end of this year.
The election of Obama in 2008 also triggered an explosion in the number of armed militias and patriot groups in the United States.
The left-wing Southern Poverty Law Center reported in its annual tally of so-called "anti-government organizations" that there were 149 militias and patriot groups when Obama took office, compared to more than 1,200 today — an increase of 755%!
