Gary Johnson on Paul Ryan: "He is anything but a libertarian"

Gary Johnson on Paul Ryan: "He is anything but a libertarian"

Austin – Gary Johnson is not happy that some in the media call Republican vice presidential candidate and Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan a libertarian.

"He voted for the Patriot Act, he voted for the National Defense Appropriation Act, he voted to ban online poker, he's proposing a budget that gets balanced in thirty years. He is anything but a libertarian, anything but," said Johnson after a packed campaign dinner at Hill's Café.

Johnson, the Libertarian Party nominee for president, noted that Ryan was a strict social conservative that voted to restrict abortion rights and against marriage equality.

"Paul Ryan submitted personhood legislation that is anything but libertarian," he said. Johnson's eyes widened and his volume increased as he went into detail about Ryan's support for a national version of Virginia's controversial transvaginal ultrasound law.

Johnson suggested that all the talk of Ryan as a libertarian and follower of Ayn Rand may help him because people will see pretty quickly that former New Mexico governor is the only real libertarian running.

Many libertarians credit Rand's novels with changing their worldview but Johnson said he did not read her novels until the mid-1990s when he was governor of New Mexico.

"I came away from Atlas Shrugged and able to verbalize that the best thing I can do is be the best that I can be, something that I held to before I ever read it," he said.

"Atlas Shrugged for me was a validation of my own thoughts. There was no conversion," he said.

Johnson suggested that his wife read Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead so she could get a better understanding of his worldview.

Obama's Electric Car Boom in Indy City Goes Bust…Gave Stimulus To Foreign Company With Three Bankruptcies

by Scotty Starnes

I had to change the title for CBS to report the truth. Obama' electric car pipe-dream has gone bust and all the taxpayers got was the bill. Its the same situation. Obama gave loans to a corporation with a terrible track record with money.

(CBS News) ELKHART, Ind. - Elkhart, Indiana lost jobs faster than any other city in the country in 2009. Both Democrats and Republicans promised to re-energize manufacturing in the city, backing a new electric car plant. But as CBS News investigated, instead of a boom, things went bust.

With unemployment peaking above 20 percent, Elkhart, Indiana was at the white-hot center of the economic meltdown, and a natural launch point for President Obama's electric vehicle initiative.

" So that's why I'm here today," the president said three years ago. "To announce $2.4 billion in highly competitive grants."

Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels was also on board in convincing Norwegian company Think Global to open a plant in Elkhart to build Think City electric cars with a sticker price of about $42,000.

As incentive, the federal government offered Think City $17 million in stimulus tax credits.

Dorinda Heiden-Guss heads up the local economic development effort. "We were excited," she said. "We were invigorated at a very devastating time."

But it turns out the company had a checkered track record, including three previous bankruptcies. We recently visited Think City's Indiana plant, and here's what we found: a largely empty warehouse.

Blind Mice Given Sight After Device Cracks Retinal Code

By Jeanna Smialek - Aug 14, 2012 7:05 PM ET

(Corrects the experimental process in seventh paragraph of story published yesterday.)

Blind mice had their vision restored with a device that helped diseased retinas send signals to the brain, according to a study that may lead to new prosthetic technology for millions of sight-impaired people.

Current devices are limited in the aid they provide to people with degenerative diseases of the retina, the part of the eye that converts light into electrical impulses to the brain. In research described today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, scientists cracked the code the retina uses to communicate with the brain.

The technology moves prosthetics beyond bright light and high-contrast recognition and may be adopted for human use within a year or two, said Sheila Nirenberg, a neuroscientist at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York and the study's lead author.

"What this shows is that we have the essential ingredients to make a very effective prosthetic," Nirenberg said. Researchers haven't yet tested the approach on humans, though have assembled the code for monkeys, she said.

Once the researchers determined the code the mouse retina used to communicate with the brain, they were able to mimic it with electric-signal sending glasses, Nirenberg said. Previous prosthetics have used less-specific stimulation and proved inherently limited as a result, she said.

About 20 million people worldwide are blind or facing blindness due to retinal degenerative diseases, such as macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa. The disorders cause a progressive loss of the retina's input cells, or photoreceptors.

Visual Equations

Nirenberg and co-author Chethan Pandarinath first monitored healthy eyes to determine the set of equations that translate light received by the retina into something the brain can understand. Then, they used special glasses to create a similar code and deliver it to the eye, which had been engineered to contain light-sensitive proteins. The cells received the code through the light sensitive proteins and fired electric impulses, which the brain could interpret as images.

Nirenberg's research "is basically giving vision back to a system that doesn't work," said Aude Oliva, a principal investigator at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory in Cambridge, Massachusetts, who wasn't involved in the research. "I've never seen, and other people have never seen, this quality."

No foreseeable barriers should stop the movement into humans now that the technology has been created, Oliva said. Nirenberg said that if researchers can come up with adequate cash to fund clinical trials, she hopes to soon adapt the technology.

Macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in people older than 55 in the western world and may triple in incidence by 2025 according to a 2009 report by the American Optometric Society. Retinal diseases could find a "reasonable solution" in the technology, said Jonathan Victor, a professor in the department of neurology and neuroscience at Weill who was familiar with, but not involved in the research.

"It's a major step, it's elegant, and it works," he said.

I'm particularly interested in this because my wife was diagnosed with wet macular degeneration in the right eye when she was 50 years old.
