Re: **JP** Letter to Editor - Elections

The only way that I can think of is that the constituents gherao their present representatives and extract  a promise from them that since they have failed us not only they but also their immediate near ones and dear ones shall not contest any elections in the future. Then they should look around and select the best and most suitable person among from themselves and ask him/her to represent them.  If he/she shows any reluctance to do so, he/she MUST be forced to do so even at the proverbial "point of the sword" if need be as was done to Hazrat Ali (A.S) by the people of Medina after the Shahadat of Hazrat Usman (R.A.)

That way we might get some fresh and probably younger blood who may prove to be more dedicated, selfless, honest and capable of ameliorating the lot of the masses.

Dear jafery sahb….aslmo-alikum

Who will bring this revolution for this helpless nation..if you can see in the past all progressive work has done during military regime..terbaila and mangla dams has done in ayoub khan regime..graf of inflation was lower then a democratic govt as we see mushraf period a common man can lead his life(wife husband with 2 kids) was not more then 15000/- Rs per month which has gone up to 30000/- Rs per month…load shedding was minor which was 3 to 4 hours a day, now has gone up to 14 hours a day…dollars was at that time 51 but now it has gone up to 96 Rs. Fuel prices was 56 Rs per litres which has gone 95 litre….our politicians raise slogans that democracy is better then dictatorship, can any body tell me this kind of democracy in which the index of  price  high, due to load shedding the people are dying and particularly in ramadan time..people of Pakistan will agree with me that army rule is better then democracy…army generals faithfull with Pakistan..we didn't see any bank balance and any property belongs to army rulers…Gen zia has own his house only..Gen mushraf don't have his bank balance or property Gen ayoub also didn't have any thing….while on other hands when we see our political leadership, 1st of all zardarai has unlimited bank balance and property, sharif brothers have also lot of properties..so my dear brothers  when we compare with democracy to army rule we make this conclusion that army is the best and suitable for our country…but at the moments our army general Kianai don't have courage to come over and rule in Pakistan, not like Zia and mushraf..these general was brave and courage and when they see the situations of the country they come over and rule…I think kianai is a coward General..zardari bargain with him also he cannot make any decision..we see within these four years govt irritate army but general kiani didn't take any action…may be another geral instead of kiani will be handle the country affairs well ( sorry for Mr. kiani) this is the time for you to come over and rule and I think if you make any decision people of Pakistan will be with you and you will better handle the country affairs…

Dear Join Pakistan

LETTER TO EDITOR

July 25th, 2012

Elections Elections Elections

Hamid Mir summed up his Capital Talk show by saying that they (the panellists) had analysed the problems of Pakistan and the panacea for all of them was elections, elections, and elections.

I beg to disagree.  Who would all do they think shall be given the party tickets for the next and the next thereafter ad infinitum  elections to contest and win?  The same chips of the same block -  Baap nahi tau Beta, Beti nahi tau Bahu, Bhanja nahi tau bhateeja, Chacha nahi tau Mama,  - - - - again ad infinitum. What choice would the poor electorate have except to choose one among from the same luteras?

There will be no change whatsoever and the same professional and hereditary corrupt plunderers will rule over this hapless nation unless some Khomeini or Mao rids them of the gnawing sharks and leeches!

Canadians of convenience do disservice to this country

We shouldn't be glorifying hyphenated Canadians who return to the land of their lineage to fight in foreign conflicts.

Toronto resident Thwaiba Kanafani posted a YouTube video on July 7 announcing her intentions to join the Syrian rebel forces. The 41-year-old is a trained engineer and mother of two kids who were born in Canada. She was born in Damascus and moved to Canada in 2002. She said she could no longer sit idly by and watch people be murdered. She's now joined the Syrian Free Army to fight against President Assad.

I don't know her personally at all, but am willing to assume she's a great mother, great employee, pays her taxes, follows the law. Fine. And I'm definitely not a fan of President Assad. After all the horrible things he's done, he's now making threats about weapons of mass destruction and chemical warfare. But Assad's wrongs aside, I think we should ask some questions about what Kanafani is doing.

A year ago I wrote a column about this very issue happening in Libya. Ottawa resident Ottawa resident Nader Ben Raween, who was born in Edmonton, was killed fighting in Libya against Ghadafi's forces. Mohamed Elshawar works as a paramedic in the Alberta oil fields. He had gone to Libya and fought alongside Ban Raween, and returned.

I understand a lot of people come to Canada for a better life and then send money back to family members in other countries. I get that. But going into a foreign country from Canada to take up arms is different.

A little thought experiment: what if the particulars were different? What if, say, Canada was involved in Syria and we were backing one faction and Kanafani's allegiance was to another faction? Would she be there, fighting the side that we're supporting - fighting us? Would she remain here and sabotage our efforts?

It's not a ridiculous question. Ever heard of Omar Khadr? Ever heard of the Somali terrorist group al-Shabab, that recruits young men from Toronto to fight overseas?

I'm not suggesting Kanafani has any moral equivalence to Khadr. She's clearly one of the good guys.

But all these cases do share one similarity, in that they've shown their ties are closer to the country of their lineage than to their country of residence.

Canada is not an international refuelling station. It's not a place where you go to enjoy our stable government and strong economy only to stockpile your finances to in turn fuel your conflicts in a foreign government.

If a Canadian or resident for that matter wants to fight for justice in a foreign country, they either need to relocate permanently to that country, or join the Canadian Forces, where they can do it officially.

I'm not picking on Kanafani. If my foreign-residing family was under siege, maybe I'd feel the same way too. But it's telling that people who call themselves Syrian-Canadians, Libyan-Canadians, etc., far too often take the first half of that hyphenated identity more seriously than the second half. The Canadian half. And that's a problem.

We can't universalize her practice. What if everyone did this? Canada would be a mess.

She has a plane ticket to return to Canada booked for a couple months from now. If she's kidnapped in the interim, she's on her own. It'll be up to her colleagues in the Syrian Free Army to rescue her. Not Canadian forces. Not a cent of Canadian tax dollars.

Kanafani has already been involved in sectarian arguments as people jockey for committee positions and titles. She says she's been accused of being an Israeli mole. She's also accused others of being pro-Assad moles. This doesn't seem like it will end well.

Kanafani spoke in a video recorded with the Free Army in Syria: "I came from Canada to answer the call of my homeland."

Canada won't fare too well in the future if more people behave like 'Canadians of convenience' and answer the call of their homelands.

Re: NSA whistleblowers: Government Spying on Every Single American

The attacks September 11, 2001, were instrumental in enabling the US
