French reporter first foreign journalist killed in Syria

Re: French reporter first foreign journalist killed in Syria

Dear Mr. Frank La Rue,

I am sharing my deepest concern about the French TV journalist Gilles Jacquier who was killed on Wednesday in the Syrian city of Homs, according to news reports. Jacquier is the first foreign journalist killed in Syria since the 10-month uprising began.

I express my   deepest condolences to the family and friends of Gilles Jacquier. I call on the Syrian government to explain the circumstances of this tragedy.

Jacquier, a reporter for the French public broadcaster France2, was killed along with seven other people while he was covering a pro-regime rally in Homs with a group of journalists, news reports said. The exact circumstances of the attack that left the journalist dead were unclear. An Agence France-Presse photographer who witnessed the attack told AFP that a mortar shell fell on the group, but other news accounts reported that the deaths and injuries were the result of rocket-propelled grenades.

Jacquier's employer confirmed his death with a statement on its website. France2 said that Jacquier was with a cameraman, Christophe Kenck, who was slightly wounded in the attack.

Dutch journalist Steven Wassenaar was also injured in the attack, according to news reports.

Foreign journalists have largely been banned from Syria since March, with only a few journalists given permission to enter the country. Jacquier was visiting Syria as part of a group of 12 journalists on a government-authorized trip to Homs, according to the official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).

No group has taken responsibility for the attack. SANA said in a statement on its website that an official at the Ministry of Information said the attack was carried out by an armed terrorist group. The government has routinely blamed killings and unrest on armed terrorist groups but has consistently failed to provide evidence to support the claims.

According to the information that I have received CPJ has documented the deaths of two Syrian journalists killed in relation to their work in Syria over the past three months. In November, cameraman Ferzat Jerban was found in Homs with his eyes gouged out. Basil al-Sayed, a videographer, was shot in the head at a Homs checkpoint in late December.

I urge you to ensure the all possible actions to intervene into the said matter that these murders and all crimes against the press are investigated, and the perpetrators brought to justice so that journalists can work freely without fear of reprisal.

Thank you for your attention to these important matters. We look forward to your response.

Sincerely,

William Nicholas Gomes

Re: Gingrich Cancels Event in Face of Ron Paul Protesters

The 84 ethics charges were brought by a partisan, Democratic controlled ethics committee, and eventually reduced down to one charge.  $300k was a cheap price to shut the witch hunt down.

Gingrich brought the Contract with America,  balanced the budget for four years, and was able to reach across the aisle.  Gingrich has continuosuly looked for conservative solutions to issues facing the United States,  which were not those same, old, tired, Marxist inspired attempts brought by the Democrats.

Your version of Gingrich's record is right out of the Marxist playbook there PlainOl, which speaks volumes.

Newt started his campaign in disgrace and will end in disgrace.

Eighty-four ethics charges were filed against Gingrich during his term
as speaker. After extensive investigation and negotiation by the House
Ethics Committee, Gingrich was sanctioned $300,000 by a 395–28 House
vote. It was the first time in history a speaker was disciplined for
ethical wrongdoing.

Republicans lost five seats in the House in the 1998 elections—the
worst midterm performance in 64 years for a party that didn't hold the
presidency. Polls showed that Gingrich and the Republican Party's
attempt to remove President Clinton from office was deeply unpopular
among voters.[71] Gingrich suffered much of the blame for the election
loss. Facing a rebellion in the Republican caucus, he announced on
November 5, 1998, that he would not only stand down as Speaker, but
would leave the House as well.

Gingrich has stated that he has developed a greater appreciation for
the role of faith in public life following his conversion, and
believes that the United States has become too secular.

Egypt: Christian on Trial for ‘Insulting Islam’ with Mickey Mouse Cartoon

Mickey and Minnie are a great improvement over your regular muzzieturd's costume.

New post on Doctor Bulldog & Ronin

Egypt: Christian on Trial for 'Insulting Islam' with Mickey Mouse Cartoon

by doctorbulldog

Meanwhile, Deputy Secretary of State, William Burns (Chief Assistant to Hillary Clinton) is busily sucking up to Egypt's terrorist organization, the Muslim Brotherhood.   Of course, I'm fairly positive that the following topic never came up in discussions:

Coptic Christian on trial over Mickey Mouse cartoon

by Michael Gryboski, Christian Post

A Coptic Christian who is a billionaire telecommunications mogul is on trial in Egypt over allegations of "blasphemy and insulting Islam".

Naguib Sawiris posted a cartoon of a bearded Mickey Mouse alongside a veiled Minnie Mouse. If convicted, Sawiris could face a year in prison.

"This is a religious agenda being acted out," said Dr Carl Moeller of Open Doors, a ministry that focuses on supporting persecuted Christians.

"It was never socially popular to do what he did," said Moeller, who added that putting Sawiris on trial for expressing an unpopular religious opinion was "problematic."

Kamal Nawash, founder of the Free Muslims Coalition, said it would be "a very sad day for Islam and rational people if Naguib Sawiris is actually tried for 'insulting' Islam".

For many onlookers, including Fr. Bishoy Andrawes of St. Mark Coptic Church in Washington DC, this is yet further proof that Christians have it worse now than when dictator President Hosni Mubarak was in power.

Andrawes, who was raised in Egypt, said that the situation in Egypt was worse because of the lack of proper police protection and the efforts to advance Sharia law, or Islamic law, by powerful political groups like the Salafists and the Muslim Brotherhood.

"As of now, they are making their intentions clear," said Andrawes.

"Things will get a lot worse as the Muslim Brotherhood and their Salafii associates control the government."

Andrawes noted that since the ousting of Mubarak, efforts by groups like the Muslim Brotherhood have included imposing a special tax on Copts for not converting to Islam.

Outside of Egypt, Andrawes said that Coptic Christians were taking these developments "with considerable sadness and anger", with a fear that Egypt will experience an exodus of Christians similar to that of Iraq.

"The main and necessary first step is to ensure that the new constitution protects all minorities. If it is left in the hands of the new government, representing the Muslim majority, it will not do that," said Andrawes.

Nawash of Free Muslims Coalition believes that although the current government of Egypt "probably opposes discrimination," it is "too weak to vigorously defend the rights of any segment of the population, including Christians."

"It is yet too early to conclude what is the status of religion and political freedom in Egypt," remarked Nawash.

"However, it does not appear that it will be any better than it was under Mubarak which will be terrible for the future of Egypt."

Persecution of Coptic Christian in Egypt is nothing new, as sporadic violence occurred under the Mubarak regime. Since the overthrow of Mubarak, however, observers have been troubled by the rising tide of anti-Christian violence in the country. Last October, several Coptic Christians were killed in clashes with the military over the rights of the religious minority.

In the case of Sawiris, however, another factor besides being a Copt may have played a role. Sawiris is also head of the Free Egyptians political party, a secular political group.

"No doubt, it's political," said Moeller, who noted that given the blur of religion and politics in Egypt the two issues overlapped in this incident.
