We live in the age of Ron Paul

Last year in this column I wrote: "If you have not been paying attention, it is time to look around and realize that we are living in the political age of Rep. Ron Paul."

The first section of the Wikipedia page entry for the Tea Party Movement even quotes a sentence from that column, where I argued the Tea Party dynamic that won the House majority for the GOP in 2010 "grew largely out of the ashes of (Paul's) 2008 presidential campaign" by emphasizing "limited government and a return to constitutional principles."

Now, the 76-year-old Texan is retiring at the end of this Congress after 12 terms in the House of Representatives.

During his latest run for the Republican presidential nomination, Paul tangled with Mitt Romney, particularly over civil liberties.

But unlike other candidates, he did not attack Romney harshly.

Paul and Romney remain friendly but Paul was never on the short list -- or any other list -- of people who were considered as Romney's running mate.

Just last month, well after Romney had wrapped up enough delegates to win the Republican race, Paul continued to try to get enough unpledged GOP delegates to commit to vote for him so he could get his own name placed in nomination.

The idea was to give him a moment of national recognition at the Tampa convention and assure him one final platform before a national audience.

But the effort failed.

Now he will leave the national political scene quietly, although he probably had a hand in getting a coveted convention speech slot for his son, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky).

Ron Paul deserves more.

In presidential debates, and until his last days in Congress, Paul has continued to stir revolution in the Republican Party by fighting the GOP establishment.

During the debates, Paul got Republican audiences to applaud his calls for legalization of drugs, ending criminalization of prostitution and getting American troops out of endless wars around the globe.

His daring positions won raves from young people, a legion of online fans and contributors while reviving the libertarian wing of the GOP and forcing open the doors of the party to Tea Party energy.

Despite those accomplishments, the Republican establishment continues to treat Paul like a crazy uncle.

But Paul is a persistent politician.

Before the House adjourned for the August recess, Paul won a vote to have an audit of the Federal Reserve.

There has never been an audit of the Fed, and it is not likely to happen now because the bill is going nowhere in the Senate.

Still, that was a revolutionary act against Wall Street, the nation's banking establishment and the Washington politicians they bankroll.

Every House Republican, except for one, voted for the bill. Eighty-nine Democrats broke with their party's leadership and voted for it.

Paul has long argued that the Federal Reserve's role in monetary policy is at the heart of the nation's economic problems.

He made this a central part of his presidential campaign in 2008, and in 2012. He even authored a book called "End the Fed" in 2009.

The global financial scandal surrounding the manipulation of the LIBOR interest rates is causing some economic observers to take a second look at Paul's critique of the Fed's policies.

As a member of the House Financial Services Committee, Paul's cross-examinations of Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke have become very popular on YouTube, with some earning hundreds of thousands of views.

Paul got to question Bernanke one last time at a committee hearing last month and brought a rare passion to discussions of monetary policy.

"It's the destruction of the currency that destroys the middle class," he said. "There's a principle of free market thinking that says (by) destroying the value of the currency through inflation, you transfer the wealth from the middle class and it gravitates to the very wealthy. If you like big government, (you) love the Fed.

Just as he took on the powers at the Federal Reserve, Paul has taken on the powerful and the rich who support unquestioned spending on the military budget.

Cutting the Pentagon's budget was once dismissed as a lunacy by the political establishment, and especially Republicans. But it has become an increasingly popular position in Congress during Paul's tenure.

A July survey from the Center for Public Integrity revealed that 80 percent of voters in congressional districts represented by Democrats favor lowering defense spending.

And in a tribute to the power of Ron Paul, 74 percent of voters in districts with Republican representatives now also say they want to lower the defense budget.

Paul's colleagues in the House are reflecting this new attitude about defense spending. In a surprise move, the GOP-controlled House passed a defense appropriations bill in July that contained an amendment to reduce the military budget by $1.1 billion.

The amendment passed by a substantial majority, 247-167. Eighty-nine Republicans joined 158 Democrats voting in favor of it.

One of the amendment's authors, Rep. Mick Mulvaney (R-S.C.), even credits Paul with helping to shift the debate so that the amendment could be passed.

As he leaves the political scene, there is no doubt that cranky Ron Paul has made his mark on American politics.

We will be living in the age of Ron Paul for many years to come.

آ ج ہم 65یوم آ زادی اس جو ش و جذبے سے منار ہے ہیں کہ ہمیں جوثمر 65برس قبل ملاتھا اس کی حفاظت ، ترقی ،امن امان کی بہترصورتحال، اور ایک ترقی پسند ملک کے طور پر اسے دنیا میں روشناس کروائیں گے اور یہ قوموں کی زندگی کا اہم ترین دین بھی ہو تا ہے جب وہ کسی سے آ زادی حاصل کر تی ہیں اور اس دن کو شایان شان طریقے سے مناتی ہیں اور 14اگست کا دن ہمارے لئے بھی وہ دن ہے جب مسلمانان برصغیر کو انگریزوں اور ہندو بنئیوں سے آ زادی نصیب ہوئی اور اس غلامی کے دور میں جو جو مظالم مسلمانان بر صغیر کے اوپر ڈھائے گئے اگر ان کو تحریر میں سمویا جائے تو ہر دل پاش پاش اور ہر آ نکھ ا شکبار ہو جائے گی کہ اس ملک کو حاصل کر نے کے لئے ہمارے آ باؤ اجداد نے لاکھوں جانوں کی قربا نیاں دی ہیں ہماری ماؤں بہنوں نے اس ملک پر اپنی عزتیں قربا ن کر ڈالیں اور ہمارے جیسے ہی بھائیو ں اور ماں با پ کے لخت جگروں نے اس ملک کو اپنا خو ن دے کر سیراب کیا تب جا کر ہمیں یہ ملک ملا جہاں آ ج ہم آزادی کی سانسیں لے رہے ہیں اورآ ج 14اگست کے دن کو ہم ''آزادی '' کے نام پر صرف ''چھٹی گزارنے''اور آوارہ گردی کرنے ، موٹرسائیکلوں اور دوسری گاڑیوں پر غیر سنجیدہ رویہ اپنا کر دن گزار دیتے ہیں اور اپنے ملک کو حاصل کر نے کی سوچ کو بھی بھول چکے ہیں جو کہ ایک مہذب قوم کے لئے لمحہ فکر یہ ہے اور اس کے اوپر سوالیہ نشان ہے کہ وہ کن افکار کے طور پر سامنے آئی تھی اور اب اس کا چال چلن کیسا ہو گیا ہے جب کہ یہ د ن تو ''یوم احتساب '' کاد ن ہے کہ آ ج سے 65برس قبل ملنے والے ثمر میں ہم نے اپنا کیا حصہ ڈالا ہے؟ اس کی ترقی خوش حالی میں اپنا کیا کردار ادا کیا ہے؟ اور اس کے نام کو روشن کر نے کے لئے کیا کارنامہ سر انجام دیا ہے؟ اس کے اوپر بیرونی طاقتوں کی طرف سے لگنے والے الزامات پر اس کی حفاظت کا کیا کام کیا ہے؟ اور کون سا اچھا کام اس کے لئے کیا ہے کہ اس کا بیرونی دنیا میں نام روشن کر نے میں کام آ یا ہو؟ یا یہ کہ جو ثمر ہمیں ملا ہے اس کی حفاظت کرنے کے لئے کیا اقدامات اٹھائے ہیں؟اپنے آ با ؤ اجداد کی قربانیوں کو دیمک سے بچایا ہے؟ کیا ہم نے اس ملک کو ان افکار پر عمل پیرا کیا ہے جو ہمارے آ باؤ اجداد نے اس کے لئے دیکھے تھے ؟ ان تمام اسلامی اصولوں پر یہاں عمل ہو رہا ہے جن کی لئے یہ ٹکڑا حاصل کیا گیا تھا؟ یا پھر ہم اس ثمر کو دیمک سے بچا ہی نہیں سکے؟ کیا ہمارا فردا فردااور قومی سفر شاہراہ زندگی پر اپنی متعین منزل کی طرف ٹھیک ٹھا ک طریقے سے جاری و ساری ہے یا نہیں ؟۔ اور اس میں کیا بہتری کے لئے تجاویز ہیں؟ ان تمام سوالوں کا جواب تلاش کر یں تو ہر بات کا جواب ناں میں ہی سامنے آ ئے گا کیونکہ غیروں کو تو چھوڑیئے اپنوں کی سازشوں سے ہی ہم اسے محفو ظ نہیں رکھ سکے اور اوپر سے ہمیں غیر زخم پر زخم دیئے جا رہے ہیں آ ئیں ہم آ ج اپنا احتساب خو د کر کے دیکھتے ہیں اگر ہم اپنا احتساب خود کر تے ہیں تو آنے والے دنوں میں ہمارے ملک کو کسی احتساب بیورو کی ضرورت نہیں رہے گی۔ کہ ہم نے کیا کردار اس کی ترقی خوش حالی کے لئے ادا کیا ہے تو قارئین کرام ! راقم کو یہ بات کہنے میں کوئی جھجھک اور دکھ محسوس نہیں ہو رہا کہ ہم نے اپنے آباؤ اجدا د کی قربانیوں، ماؤوں بہنوں کی عزتوں اور بھائیوں کے خون کو صرف ردی کی ٹوکری میں فضول چیزوں کی طرح ڈال دیا ہے ہم ان کی ان قربانیوں کو بھول چکے ہیں جو انھوں نے اس ٹکڑے کو حاصل کر نے کے لئے دی تھیں ان بہنوں کو بھول چکے ہیں جن کی عزتوں سے پہلے پردہ چھینا گیا اور بعد میں ان کی عزتوں سے کھیل کر ان کو شہیدکر دیا گیا اور ان بھائیوں کو بھی بھول چکے ہیں جنھوں نے اس ملک کے لئے اپنی جانوں کی قربانی دی ان ماؤوں کو بھی بھول چکے ہیں جنھوں نے خود اپنے لخت جگروں کو اس پر قربان ہونے کا ''حکم ''دیا ہو گا آ ج تو صرف ذاتی انا کی تسکین اور ذاتی مفادات کے لئے اسے استعمال کرناشروع کر دیا ہے ا حتساب کی بات کر تے ہیں تو اپنے آ پ سے کر تے ہیں اگر ہم لکھاری ہیں تو اپنے ذاتی مفاد ات کے لئے لکھتے ہیں اور جہاں سے ہمیں مالی مفاد حاصل ہو تے ہیں ان کے حق میں لکھتے ہیں ان کے ہر جائز و ناجائز کام پر بھی ان کے قصیدے لکھتے ہیں اگر سیاست دان ہیں تو وہ بھی قومی مفادات کی بجائے ذاتی مفادات کے لئے سیاست کر تے ہیں اگر کلرک ہیں تو کرپشن کے بے تاج بادشاہ ہیں اگر سٹوڈنٹ ہیں تو سکول /کالج پڑھنے کے بجائے صرف اور صرف وقت گزاری کی جگہ سمجھتے ہیں جب کہ یہ ملک ان عقائد پر عمل پیرا ہو نے کے لئے تو نہیں حاصل کیا گیا تھا اور اتنی قربانیاں ان کاموں کے لئے تو نہیں دی گئیں تھیں جو آج ملک میں ہو رہے ہیں۔جب کہ ہم سب اسے ترقی یافتہ دیکھنا چاہتے ہیں۔ ہم سب کا مقصدِ حیا ت اور منشور ایک ہے تو کیا بات ہے کہ پاکستان 65سالوں بعد بھی اسی پسماندگی میں اپنے دن گزار رہا ہے جو قیام پاکستان کے وقت اس کی گو د میں موجو دتھی اگر ہم سب اس کو ترقی یافتہ بنانا اوردیکھنا چاہتے ہیں تو وہ کیا محرکات ہیں کہ آ ج تک ترقی اس کو چھو کر بھی نہیں گزری تو حقیقت یہ ہے کہ ہم صرف نعروں سے اس کی ترقی کے گن گاتے ہیں عملی اقدامات کو ئی نہیں کر تے اگر سیاست دان ہیں تو تمام سیاسی جماعتوں کے منشور میں اسے ترقی یافتہ ملک بنانے کے لئے لکھا گیا ہے مگر حقیقت یہ ہے کہ تمام سیاسی جماعتیں اپنے ذاتی مفادات کو مقدم رکھتی ہیں اور اس کی ترقی کو پس پست ڈال کر اپنے لئے ذاتی فائدے حاصل کر تی ہیں ۔ نہ تو عوام کے لئے اور نہ ہی ملک کے لئے سیاست کرتی ہیں یہی وجہ ہے کہ ہمارا بیرونی دنیا میں امیج خراب ہو چکا ہے اگر کوئی ڈاکٹرہے تو وہ مسیحا بننے کی بجائے مرتے ہو ئے مریض کے سر پر اپنی فیس کی تلوار لٹکائے رکھتاہے اگر ٹیچرہے تو اپنے ادارے میں پڑھنے کی بجائے اپنی اکیڈمیاں چلانے میں فکر مند دکھائی دیتے ہیں اور اگر ا نجیئیر ہے تو وہ وقتی طو ر پر کام کرتا ہے جس میں مضبوطی کوئی نہیں ہو تی اور ایسا میٹریل استعمال کر تا ہے کہ عمارت، سڑک، اوورہیڈبرج، وغیرہ کی زندگی کا وقت نہیں دیتااگر دوکاندار ہے تو ملاو ٹ کر نا اپنا فرض سمجھتا ہے غرض تمام شعبہ زندگی میں ہم سب ہی تو لٹیرے ہیں تو پھر ہم اسے کیسے ترقی یافتہ کہہ سکتے ہیں اور کیسے ترقی یافتہ کا خواب دیکھ سکتے ہیں ۔خواب کو شرمندہ تعبیر کر سکتے ہیں؟ جب کہ اب بھی وقت ہے ہم اسے ترقی یافتہ ممالک کی صف میں شامل کر سکتے ہیں اس کے اوپر لگنے والے تمام الزامات کو رد کر وا سکتے ہیں گر اب بھی ہم ضمیر کی عدالت میں خود کو پیش کر تے ہو ئے حقیقی طور پر اس کی ترقی کے لئے ایک نئے جذبے کے تحت کام شر و ع کر دیں تو بہت جلد ہم اس ملک کو اس کی عوام کو ان کا کھویا ہوا معیار زندگی اور اعتما د دے سکتے ہیں اس کے لئے ہمیں خود سے تبدیلی کی ابتدا ء کر نی ہو گی خود غیر اخلاقی اور غیر قانونی سرگرمیوں کو ترک کر نا ہوگا ہمیں خود کا رول ماڈل بننا ہو گا جسے دیکھ کر دوسرے بھی اس راہ پر چلنے کا عزم خود بہخود کریں کسی کو اس راہ پر لانے کے لئے کوئی تبلیغ نہ کر نی پڑے اور اپنے ارد گرد موجود کوتاہیوں کا ازالہ کر نا ہو گا ۔سیات دان اپنی طرز سیاست میں تبدیلی لائیں صرف جلسوں میں مخالفین کی کمزوریوں کو سامنے لا کر اپنے لئے ''ہمدردیاں '' اکٹھی نہ کر یں بلکہ اس قوم کو ایک روشن راہ دکھائیں اس پر چلنے کا عزم دیں اور خود راہبر بن کر آگے چلیں تو وہ وقت دور نہیں جب چین،ایران کی طرح ہمارا ملک بھی حقیقی ترقی کرتا ہو ا ترقی یافتہ ممالک کی صف میں شامل ہو جا ئے گا اورعوام کا معیار زندگی بھی بلند ہوگااورسیاست دان قائد کے افکار پر چلنے کی تلقین کریں کام کام اورصرف کام کی تلقین کریں دعا ہے کہ14 اگست 2012ء ہماری قوم کو ''ایمان، اتحاد، اور نظم '' کا صحیح مطلب سمجھنے اور اس پر آ ئندہ سالوں میں عمل پیرا ہو نے کی تو فیق بخشے اور اللہ پاک پاکستان کو ہمیشہ سلا مت رکھیں (آمین)پاکستا ن زندہ آ باد***
