Meg Whitman, Millionaire Profiteer Employer of Illegal Worker, loses
Ebay bid to buy California Governors Mansion

'Buy It Now' FAIL: Former eBay CEO Whitman Is The Biggest Loser
By John C Abell November 3, 2010 | 2:39 pm | Categories: People,
Politics, Silicon Valley

2010. Used with gratitude via a Creative Commons license.

Despite big gains for Republicans at every level in this year's
mid-terms election, former eBay CEO Meg Whitman lost big despite
bidding huge to win California's governorship. The failed attempt cost
Whitman an estimated $160 million, mostly from her own pocket, in what
was by far the biggest chunk of personal fortune any person in the
United States has ever spent trying to get elected to anything.

Don't cry for Meg — Whitman is still a billionaire. She won't be
searching her attic for potential auction items to make ends meet. But
Whitman did outspend once-and-future governor Gerry Brown six-to-one
and now joins the ranks of some pretty wealthy people, many with zero
political cred, who couldn't paper over inexperience and an imperious
CEO's manner with glossy TV ads. On which, by the way, she spent about
$107 million alone, according to California Watch, for nothing nearly
as memorable as the "Demon Sheep" spot that Carly Fiorina put on
YouTube for free.

Whitman may be Queen of the Hill in personally-funded futility, but
she was hardly alone. Former professional wrestling entrepreneur Linda
McMahon spent $47 million of her own moeny losing to Richard
Blumenthal in the Connecticut Senate race. Another techie, former
Microsoft VP Suzan DelBene, spent $2.28 million on a losing bid for
the House seat in Washington's 8th District. In all some $500 million
was spent by 58 candidates who contributed at least $500,000 to their
own campaigns, Bloomberg reports, and 30 lost or dropped out.

Fiorina doled out "only" $5.5 million in her losing bid to unseat Sen.
Barbara Boxer. But the former Hewlett-Packard CEO was up against a
popular incumbent while Whitman's loss was for an open seat. And in
Brown her opponent was a candidate who, though he is the state's
current attorney general, is best known as an ultra-liberal former
California governor whose heyday was in the 1970s, is
not-always-fondly referred to as "Gov. Moonbeam" and didn't even have
enough money to run TV ads until September.

So Whitman's loss has to hurt, just a little. While we'd never be so
crass as to suggest that she was trying to buy the election maybe
Whitman's wondering what she might have spent that $160 million on
instead.

Wired.com is here to help. Here are a five back-of-the-envelope ideas:

Building something like Bill Gates' house. It cost an estimated $100
million. That leaves plenty left over for …
A 767-200 — just like the one Sergy and Larry have. The Google
founders are thought to have paid about $25 million to buy and fix it
up theirs, but a new one goes for as much at $140 million. The landing
rights they have at NASA's Moffett Field? Priceless.
Embarrass that piker Mark Zuckerberg by going 60 per cent better than
the Facebook founder's charitable contribution to the Newark, N.J.
school system.
Commission some "big" and "reasonably expensive" boats, like former
Netscape CEO Jim Clark's Hyperion. Clark denied that his 155-foot
yacht cost as much as $50 million when he got it in 1998, but even if
it was that pricey you could have still funded your own flotilla.
Invent and then sell the iPad for one day — no, wait, that's how to
make $150 million.
Buy your own private island. If you're as savvy as Johnny Depp, you'd
have had about $154 million left over to run for something else.
Got your own ideas? Leave us a comment.

Another Triumph for Statism

"So, what is the real fight between Republicans and Democrats? It's not a philosophical fight. It's over two things: power and money. They fight over who is going to have the reins of political power and who gets the big money that comes with political power."

Another Triumph for Statism
by Jacob G. Hornberger

Some mainstream media types are reporting that voters effectively rejected President Obama in the elections yesterday. The problem is that they're not looking at the big picture.

With the Republican takeover of the House, Obama is assured of full support of his interventionist foreign policy and his continued infringements on civil liberties, including the continued occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan, full criminal immunity for U.S. officials who have broken U.S. criminal and international laws against torture and illegal surveillance, kangaroo military tribunals, the enemy-combatant doctrine, the continuation of America's overseas military empire, the assassination program, the war on terrorism, and, of course, the ever-growing threat of terrorist retaliation.

Obama is also assured of continued support of his war on drugs, perhaps the most immoral, failed, and destructive war in American history.

The president is also assured of continued support for his war on immigrants, including the building of the Berlin-type fence along America's southern border as well as the militarization of the border.

Everyone knew that Obama would continue George W. Bush's big-government welfare-state programs, such as Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, education grants, subsidies, foreign aid, and Wall Street bailouts.

What liberals and young people hoped was that Obama would change directions in such areas as foreign policy, civil liberties, the drug war, and the war on immigrants.

Alas, it was not to be. As we've all learned by now, after two years of Obama in office, nothing fundamentally has changed in the past two years and, arguably, things are much worse on all fronts. After all, at least Bush and his people weren't (yet) assassinating Americans, as Obama is.

Thus, how can anyone be surprised that Obama's base of support has disintegrated? In every major area, both foreign and domestic, Obama's first two years in office have been nothing more than George W. Bush's third term in office.

The standard mindset in America, including in the mainstream press, is the "left-right debate" in America. The belief is that there is something fundamentally different about liberals and conservatives.

That's just plain nonsense. There isn't a dime's worth of difference between liberals and conservatives, not philosophically. They are both statist to the core. They both embrace socialism, interventionism, and imperialism.

Want examples? Okay, here are a few: Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, public schooling, subsidies, education grants, foreign aid, trade restrictions, immigration controls, the drug war, occupation licensure, the Federal Reserve, paper money, the minimum wage, economic regulations, the postal monopoly, wars of aggression, torture, kangaroo military tribunals, the enemy-combatant doctrine, foreign occupations, and the war on terrorism.

Oh sure, there are variations on whose reform should be adopted but those are relatively minor. Philosophically, liberals and conservatives agree on what should be the role of government in American society. They believe in socialism, interventionism, and imperialism, even though many of them operate under the self-imposed delusion that it's all "freedom and free enterprise."

So, what is the real fight between Republicans and Democrats? It's not a philosophical fight. It's over two things: power and money. They fight over who is going to have the reins of political power and who gets the big money that comes with political power.

Thus, the real battle that is going on in America is not between left and right. They're the same. The real battle is libertarianism vs. statism. While both liberals and conservatives are committed to retaining the statist status quo and fighting over who gets to govern it, libertarians are committed to dismantling the statist system, thereby restoring liberty to our land.

Obviously, our fight for a free society is a much bigger one, much more difficult than the fight over power and money between liberals and conservatives.

Will a sufficient number of Americans join up with us libertarians to restore a free-market, limited-government republic to our land? I think so. Despite the continued triumph of statism in the electoral arena, every day more and more people discover libertarianism and are attracted to our philosophy, our ideals, and our principles. The fact that people are being mugged by the reality of what statism is doing to them, their families, and our country is making our job easier.

What we libertarians must continue doing is advocating the moral, philosophical, and economic case for the free society. We must never succumb to the siren's song of winning political power in order to better manage the statist system.

We must continue injecting sound ideas on liberty into the marketplace of ideas. We must continue patiently raising people's vision to a higher level to dismantling, not reforming or running, the socialist, interventionist, and imperialist programs that the liberal and conservative statists have foisted upon our land. We must continue looking for and finding libertarians people whose love of liberty places it among their highest values.

Life does not guarantee success, but if we libertarians continue battling statism with truth, moral principles, and sound economic principles, we stand a good chance of finally reaching a critical mass that overwhelms the statists, brings an end to socialism, interventionism, and imperialism, and restores liberty, free markets, and a limited-government republic to our land.

Re: VOTE AGAINST DICK 'THE BLOOMING ASSHOLE' BLUMENTHAL

How Richard Blumenthal Smacked Down Whiney GOP WWE Profiteer Linda McMahon

In the race to succeed retiring Democratic Senator Chris Dodd,
Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal easily defeated former
wrestling executive Linda McMahon, despite being outspent by McMahon
by 7-1.

McMahon spent more than 40 million dollars on her campaign, almost all
of it her own money. She spent more than any other Senate candidate
this year. Yet as other wealthy self funding candidates this year in
Connecticut (see Ned Lamont) and in other states (see Meg Whitman and
Jeff Greene) found out, money could buy them name recognition but not
necessarily love.

Although this is the year of the "outsider", it was Blumenthal's years
of experience that probably saved him from the attacks by the McMahon
campaign. Moreover, McMahon's lack of political experience contributed
to her failure to overtake Blumenthal after closing in on him after
trailing by a wide margin early in the campaign.

The long time attorney general was able to withstand an onslaught of
tough attacks by Linda McMahon that sought to portray Blumenthal as a
career politician who couldn't be trusted. Many of her television
advertisements focused on Blumenthal's misstatements that he had
served in Vietnam, when he had actually served stateside during
Vietnam.

Full Connecticut Election Results
Connecticut Senate Exit Poll
Full Election Results
Despite these attacks Blumenthal was still viewed as "honest and
trustworthy" by Connecticut voters by a 62-36 percent margin
(preliminary CBS News Exit Poll results). A weaker candidate may have
been brought down by such attacks but Blumenthal had built up goodwill
among Connecticut voters based on his 20 year record as attorney
general that he was able to survive these attacks.

While McMahon billed herself as successful businessman who had the
skill it took to fix the ailing economy, her specific business
experience as head of the WWE turned out to be more of a liability
than an asset. By a 40-11 percent margin, Connecticut voters said that
this experience made them less likely rather than more likely to vote
for her.

Women turned out to be a key to Blumenthal's success. McMahon would
have become the first female senator elected. Yet she lost women by 21
points, but won men by 8 points. Another group that was a key to his
success was independents. Given the Democrats 34-21 percent
registration advantage in Connecticut, a Republican needs to win the
independent vote by a significant margin. Blumenthal was able to split
the independent vote with McMahon 50-49 percent.

Blumenthal had a very good October, which he really needed. After
leading McMahon all year and by as much as 41 points in January
McMahon had closed to within 3 points in September in a Quinnipiac
University Poll.

McMahon stumbled on a question involving the minimum wage which caused
her to be on the defensive for the first time in the campaign.

McMahon initially did not give a clear answer when asked whether she
favored lowering the minimum wage at a press conference. Not only did
this hurt her but her campaign suffered another blow when she said
didn't know what the minimum wage was, despite her business experience
that she was running on. Blumenthal opened up a 12 point lead in
October and never looked back.
