Senate Proposes Bill Giving Obama Dictatorial Control Over the Internet

Senate Proposes Bill Giving Obama Dictatorial Control Over the Internet

C'mon, Libtards, why aren't you out there protesting this fascist takeover of the Internet?   You do realize that when Obama is gone, this will still be on the books, right?  Do you really want a Right-Winger president controlling your access to the internet?  Then why so deaf and dumb, eh?

Senators propose granting president emergency Internet power
cnet news

A new U.S. Senate bill would grant the president far-reaching emergency powers to seize control of or even shut down portions of the Internet.

The legislation announced Thursday says that companies such as broadband providers, search engines, or software firms that the government selects "shall immediately comply with any emergency measure or action developed" by the Department of Homeland Security. Anyone failing to comply would be fined.

That emergency authority would allow the federal government to "preserve those networks and assets and our country and protect our people," Joe Lieberman, the primary sponsor of the measure and the chairman  of the Homeland Security committee, told reporters on Thursday. Lieberman is an independent senator from Connecticut who caucuses with the Democrats.

Because there are few limits on the president's emergency power, which can be renewed indefinitely, the densely worded 197-page bill (PDF) is likely to encounter stiff opposition.

TechAmerica, probably the largest U.S. technology lobby group, said it was concerned about "unintended consequences that would result from the legislation's regulatory approach" and "the potential for absolute power." And the Center for Democracy and Technology publicly worried that the Lieberman bill's emergency powers "include authority to shut down or limit Internet traffic on private systems."

The idea of an Internet "kill switch" that the president could flip is not new. A draft Senate proposal that CNET obtained in August allowed the White House to "declare a cybersecurity emergency," and another from Sens. Jay Rockefeller (D-W.V.) and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) would have explicitly given the government the power to "order the disconnection" of certain networks or Web sites.

On Thursday, both senators lauded Lieberman's bill, which is formally titled the Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act, or PCNAA. Rockefeller said "I commend" the drafters of the PCNAA. Collins went further, signing up at a co-sponsor and saying at a press conference that "we cannot afford to wait for a cyber 9/11 before our government realizes the importance of protecting our cyber resources."

[Jay Rockefeller?  Aw, crap!  Yup, it's official; this is a fascist power grab by the New World Odor. ]

Former British Spy's Organization Promotes "Islamist Feminism"

The Global Muslim Brotherhood Daily Report

The Conflicts Forum, headed by former British intelligence (MI6) agent Alastair Crooke (above), has announced a series of monographs on "feminism and gender from a stance within the Islamist community." According to the announcement:

Monograph series: GENDER DISCOURSE AND ISLAMIST PERSPECTIVES ON FEMINISM

This is the first Monograph which will form part of a series on gender discourse and Islamist perspectives on feminism that will be published by Conflicts Forum. CF is seeking to address how Islamist women, who are also feminists, understand feminism. What does it mean to be feminist within the world of Islamic movements? Many in the West would see such a discourse as an oxymoron. However Islamist feminists insist that their western counterparts have no claim to hegemony, and they demand respect and the space for a distinct Islamic perspective on this issue.

Making that space within the western dominated discourse, and fending off external imposition, requires that 'new' language must be inscribed within it: one that argues an alternative perspective. To support this debate, CF has commissioned a series of monographs on feminism and gender from a stance within the Islamist community. The purpose is to ask writers – Islamist women and writers as well as other writers and researchers – to take up the task of constructing 'new' language; and to situate the Islamic perspective within the wider debate, by challenging the dominant meme – especially in its claim that Islam represses women.

It should be noted that Part I of the first monograph (pdf), titled "Islamist Women's Activism in Occupied Palestine", contains a set of interviews by Khaled Amayreh, likely the same Palestinian "journalist" writing for the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood web site who has called Jews "a cancer on the world", called Israel a "sick and cannibalistic society that is as bestial as Nazi Germany was during the Holocaust", and accused Israel of the "wanton slaughter of children [which] occurs each day and every day of the year. In his most recent piece for the Brotherhood, Mr. Amayreh called the Nazi Holocaust the "ultimate sacrosanct cow" which is "off limit to scrutiny."

Alastair Crooke heads the Conflicts Forum in Beirut whose Advisory Board includes Azzam Tamimi, a leader in the U.K. Muslim Brotherhood and often described as a Hamas spokesman. The Conflicts Forum board also includes former CIA agent Milt Bearden, who played a leading role in the war against the Soviets in Afghanistan, and Graham Fuller, a former Vice-chair of the National Intelligence Council at the CIA. Another member of the Conflicts Forum Board is Lord John Thomas Alderdice who was one of the two organizers of a proposed April 22 video link-up in the British Parliament with Khaled Meshaal, the Damascus-based head of Hamas' Political Bureau. A technical fault prevented the event from taking place. Another media report describes a March 2005 meeting in Beirut attended by Crooke that included the Muslim Brotherhood as well as Musa Abu Marzuq, deputy leader of Hamas, and two of his senior colleagues, leaders of Lebanon's Hezbollah and representatives of Pakistan's Jamaat-e-Islami party.

A New York Times report provides some background on Mr. Crooke that may, in part, explain some of his beliefs:

Mr. Crooke has spent much of his career talking to Islamists. In the 1980s, as a young undercover agent in Pakistan and Afghanistan, he helped funnel weapons to jihadists fighting the Soviets. Later, he spent years working with Hamas and Fatah as a negotiator for the European Union, and helped broker a number of cease-fires with Israel between 2001 and 2003…

He is a little evasive about his own life and career, perhaps by training. Born in Ireland, he grew up mostly in Rhodesia, today Zimbabwe, and was educated at a Swiss boarding school and at St. Andrew's in Scotland, obtaining a degree in economics. Before joining MI6, he worked in finance in London.

"It's a dangerous area to work in," he said of his years as a banker, without apparent irony, "because it's so easy to get caught up in enrichment."

He is barred by law from discussing his service with MI6, which included years of diplomatic work on the Israel-Palestine issue. As a negotiator in the Palestinian territories, he is said to have traveled alone, by taxi, eschewing the armed security convoys of many Western diplomats. Colleagues who worked with him say Yasser Arafat and the leaders of Hamas trusted Mr. Crooke completely, as did some high-level Israeli officials.

Some Israelis, however, apparently complained that he was too close to Hamas. In late 2003, he was recalled to London — he had reached retirement age — and quietly ushered out of government service, with a commendation. He says he has no regrets, but some of his colleagues in Conflicts Forum say he retains some bitterness about the way he was treated.

In 2005, he moved to Beirut, where he lives with his partner, Aisling Byrne, and their 1-year-old child, Amistis, in an elegant, old French mandate-era apartment, working out of a home office.

An earlier post discussed a new book by Mr. Crooke titled "Resistance: The Essence of the Islamist Revolution"that, like the above piece, treated Hamas and Hezbollah so favorably and the West so critically, it raises legitimate questions about Mr. Crooke's religious and political loyalties. The central thesis of the work, that Hamas and Hezbollah are at the forefront of "resistance" to Western "hegemony", places the two Islamist organizations squarely at the center of a "clash of civilizations" as opposed to the nationalist struggle so often identified by supporters as being at the core of the groups' identity. Another post discussed a second glowing tribute to Hamas and Hezbollah as well as to Islamism in general where Mr. Crooke wrote that, Islamism is "an attempt to shape a new consciousness."

The government decides how when can respond to environmental trespass (pollution) on other property.

The Talking Cure for the Tragedy of the Commons

Bad things happen when governments keep people from cutting their own deals on resource management

 | June 8, 2010

 Listen to Audio Version (MP3)

In his famous 1968 article in the journal Science, Garrett Hardin illustrated his notion of the "tragedy of the commons" by suggesting, "Picture a pasture open to all. It is to be expected that each herdsman will try to keep as many cattle as possible on the commons. But of course, argues Hardin, all other herdsmen will have the same goal. The result is overgrazing which destroys the nurturing pasture and starves all the cows. "Therein is the tragedy," asserts Hardin. "Freedom in a commons brings ruin to all." Only centuries of "tribal wars, poaching, and disease" kept the tragedy at bay.

Hardin's tragedy is based on the logic of ruin embodied in the game theory concept of a prisoner's dilemma. In prisoner's dilemma two prisoners are questioned separately and if neither confesses then both will go free. However, if one confesses, he will receive a lesser sentence than the other who remains silent. If both confess, then both are severely punished. The prisoners' optimal strategy is to remain silent and both go free. However, not knowing what the other will do, the best individual strategy is to confess, which results in the worst outcome, punishment for both prisoners.

Hardin overlooked the fact that herdsmen are not like isolated prisoners; they can talk to each other. And as economics Nobelist Elinor Ostrom and her colleagues make clear in a recent Sciencearticle, "Lab Experiments for the Study of Social-Ecological Systems," talking makes a big difference.

To highlight the crucial importance of communication in preventing the tragedy of the commons, Ostrom and her colleagues devised a series of laboratory games. In each game, five players seek to harvest resource tokens from a computer grid using their on-screen avatars in the course of six four-minute play sessions. The initial 210 resource tokens reproduce if left alone long enough, offering the patient players a possible optimal harvest of 665 tokens in each period.

The researchers divided the play periods into two sets of three sessions each. At the beginning of some four-minute session periods, players could not communicate with nor engage in costly punishment of other players. In that case, the researchers report that "the resource was consistently depleted within about 90 seconds, confirming that without communication or punishment, the 'tragedy of the commons' prediction of Hardin is supported." The result was that players got to stare at an empty screen for two and half minutes. Even more dismaying, players learned that forbearance was a fool's game, so resource depletion sped up in each subsequent session. The results, respectively, were that groups of players collected an average of 292 tokens, 265 tokens, and 274 tokens, far less than the 665 that would be optimally available in each session.

But what happened when players were allowed in the second set of three sessions to either communicate, punish, or both? For example, when communication and punishment was allowed in the last three sessions, the groups that averaged 292 tokens boosted their harvest to an average of 451 per session, for an overall average take of 743 tokens. Just as hoped, making and keeping credible threats prevents free-riding and increases cooperation.

Lots of earlier research has found that allowing players to punish free riders can increase overall payoffs. However, Ostrom and her colleagues found that without communication, punishment alone can be counterproductive. For example, when the games began with punishment but no communication followed by three rounds of neither, the players harvested an average of 280 tokens in the punishment rounds, and 256 in the no communication or punishment rounds, for a pitiful overall average of 536 tokens. Even worse, a series of sessions that began with neither communication nor punishment followed just by punishment, resulted in harvesting an average of 265 in each of the first three sessions, falling to 247 per session in the punishment rounds, resulting in an average take of only 512 tokens.

Punishment alone made things worse. Why? The researchers suggest that the problem is that "receiving a sanction does not carry a clear message." Does the sanction relate to the amount, the speed, or the pattern of harvesting? "When communication is possible, punished participants correct their harvesting rate by slowing down," note the researchers.

In fact, the researchers found that when first three sessions involved both communication and punishment followed by three sessions with neither, the average harvests were considerably higher than when neither communication nor punishment were permitted. In that case, harvests average 402 in the first three sessions and 331 in the following three sessions, resulting in an overall average of 733. This is slightly lower than the results when the first sessions do not permit communication or punishment were followed by sessions allowing both, 743 versus 733, respectively. In both cases, it is clear that communication improves overall harvests of a common resource when combined with punishment.

But an intriguing result of the research is that communication by itself boosts overall gains even more. When researchers allowed five sets of players to begin their first three sessions by communicating, the average harvest was 441 tokens, the highest average of any opening set of sessions. When the players were not allowed to communicate nor punish in the following three sessions, average harvests fell slightly to 415 tokens. The overall average harvest was 856 tokens, more than 100 tokens better than the next best result of 743 tokens.

Interestingly, the researchers did not run six full sessions that included just communication versus six full sessions combining communication with punishment. Assuming the average harvests remained the same for each treatment, communication plus punishment would edge out just communication by 902 tokens to 882 tokens. If the lowest result from games that forbade both communication and punishment were assumed for all six sessions, the average harvest would be just 530 tokens. In other words, communication alone boosts overall harvests by 66 percent.

The good news is that research shows that just talking can make Hardin's logic of ruin anything but inevitable. In fact, historical research shows that Hardin's overgrazed meadows are rare. For example, the tragedy of the commons didn't occur in Medieval England because local herdsmen negotiated a set of rules (communication) and established enforcement mechanisms (punishment) to allocate access to scarce pasturage among themselves.

Elinor Ostrom and her colleagues have repeatedly found the same thing in their field work. All over the world, local people talked among themselves and worked out serviceable rules for protecting and benefiting from common pool resources, like streams, forests, and fisheries. Take the famous case of the harbor gangs among lobster fishers in Maine. Although the state government says that anyone is legally permitted to catch lobsters commercially, the harbor gangs restrict access by outsiders by cutting the buoy lines to the traps set by interlopers. This informal management results in a more sustainable fishery and boosts the incomes of the local fishers. A study published in theProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences last fall found that local communities are much better at managing forest commons than are governments. In contrast to government management, local communal ownership boosted incomes and forest sustainability.

Ostrom previously noted that large studies from "around the world challenge the presumption that governments always do a better job than users in organizing and protecting important resources." In fact, a 2002 study correctly noted, "The overall state of the world's fisheries is much worse today than 45 years ago, even though most fisheries have come under government regulation in this period." By preventing local people from talking among themselves, it is often the case that governments actually create prisoner's dilemmas over resources that result in the tragedy of the commons.

Dead dolphins on a private beach
(The Gulf of Mexico is no tea party)

I have taken time off from my writing my novel to address this
British Petroleum oil spill. Glen Beck can stand on his head and yell
about a Progressive conspiracy, which will lead to the end of America.
He can say that all day! The John Birch Society said that 50 years ago
and the USA is still on the map. This BP oil spill is a real problem,
which could destroy the whole earths eco balance for good. This not
Glen Beck alarmism, this is for real and we are in big trouble. It
doesn't matter who stops the leek but it must be done! We are talking
life or death here. This man made catastrophe can be reversed with the
help of scientific reason. When faced with danger, that's when the
mind works the best. However, when greed is the motive then
Machiavellian maneuvering takes precedence over the urgency of a
disaster. BP like other WASP run corporations only concern is their
image and bottom line. Plus maintaining the white power structure.
Greed is good! Good for nothing! Greed should be classified as a
mental illness. It's a form of obsessive/compulsive disorder. Other
symptoms are the sociopath tic disregard of other people feelings and
put your pleasure above all things. More! More! I want more!  I have
talking about this for years. I keep repeating myself. That is why I
stopped writing commentaries on the Internets.
You notice the tea party movement have been silent since this
oil spill happened and the rest of right wing media have silent as a
graveyard. The right blames everything on government and the left
blames everything on capitalism, I blame everything on all of those
entities. I also blame religion too. However, the left is correct when
it says Capitalism controls government! Government does not really do
a decent job in regulating capitalism unless you are a small business.
Republicans and conservatives always leave out words like, "Rich".
They always say: Liberals want to tax America! What they really mean
is: Liberals want to tax rich Americans! They also say anti-government
rhetoric. You'd think they were fucking anarchists! Once again they
leave out a word. They are not anti-Government!  They are anti Liberal
government! They are anti democracy! Republicans are pro-government! A
government that suppresses poor people, a government that destroys the
middle class, a government that gives tax money to private
corporations and tax breaks to the rich, and a government that passive
aggressively maintains the white power structure.
Now the crux of the problem, Capitalism is not only an economic
system but also a religion. Many white males have a religious fervor
when come to private property and profit. They harping on the fact
that capitalism is freedom. Once again they leave out words:
Capitalism is freedom for capitalists only. They believe that
obtaining profit by any means necessary is God given right. No matter
who you hurt as long as you are the winner that's all it matters. This
is social Darwinism at it's worst. There is major devaluation of labor
in the USA right now! If you are a worker, you are a loser! Rich
people are successful! You worship success as a God! Do not blaspheme
success! How dare you punish success! If exploiting the working class
is success! Then we should punish success! Hitler was an individual!
Our country stands for individualism!  The cult of individualism does
not believe in freedom, they believe in might is right. Freedom should
only reserved for the one in power.
This oil spill is a result of pure undaunted greed. Solving
the problem is NOT going to come from the Government or the Private
sector. It's going from a thinking individual who will ignite a
collective action.
The selfish rich will not care about the consequences of their evil
deeds. If they found dead dolphins on their private beach, they would
sell them to the Japanese!

Fwd: [I-S] Tea Party protestor assaulted, defends wife and gets a summons

Tea Party protestor assaulted, defends wife and gets a summons

The Wealth of Nathan Tabor

By Judi McLeod  Friday, June 11, 2010

Former congressional candidate and longtime Canada Free Press (CFP) columnist Nathan Tabor was assaulted in front of his wife and daughter at a Greensboro Tea Party gathering, protesting the proposed government bailout of credit cards.

You can see what Tabor describes as the "sucker punch" from the in-yer-face attacker.

Wearing his swollen face like a badge of honour when being interviewed by Neil Cavuto on FoxNews, the Greensboro, NC resident was more concerned that his wife, Jordan and 5-year-old daughter, Abigail had to see the assault.

That is so typical of Nathan Tabor.  It was only a few weeks ago when this worried Dad asked FaceBook readers for prayers for Abigail, who was inconsolable when a trip to the vet ended with having to have her pet cat put down.  Unbeknownst to the little girl the cat was riddled with cancer.

"She's only 5 and doesn't understand," Tabor wrote on FaceBook.

Radical Union Organizer Black Liberation Activist Slugs Tea Party Protester in Face

Tabor,  who was not even in the center of the Tea Party gathering,  has the video to prove that his wife had been pushed three times by the obviously angry man, who had been telling the crowd "we're in this mess because of clown George Bush…"he deregulated everything."

During the protest, a man parked his vehicle,  walked in off the street and started yelling at the Tea Party protesters.

Tabor was standing about 10 feet away when the man pushed his wife for the first time.  "Don't touch my wife," he told the attacker.  When the man continued to push his wife, Tabor turned his camera on.

As Cavuto pointed out, "It got even weirder after the fact".

Both attacker, brought there by the police,  and victim who voluntarily attended, spent a hour-and-a half wait down at the local magistrate's office.  Without watching the video, the magistrates issued a criminal summons for assault for the perpetrator—and a criminal summons for assault for Tabor too.

Cavuto had extended an invitation for his interview to the attacker.  A statement from the attacker's lawyer aired on FoxNews stated, "We are going to deal with this in the courtroom.  We going to find out being wealthy doesn't make a difference in the courtroom."

Alleged wealth is a factor in alleged assault?

CFP can attest to Nathan Tabor's real wealth.  It can be found every morning in the Scripture he sends out on FaceBook.  Tabor starts off many people's new day with the Word of Christ.  To some, including CFP, that's real wealth.

To Tea Party colleagues, Tabor offers the wealth of true patriotism.

To his wife and little girl, he brings the wealth of devoted husband and father.

Thank you God for Nathan Tabor's boundless wealth.
