The power-hungry Islamists who are about to take the reins in Egypt have one very big backer in the United States: Jimmy Carter.
The ex-president, in Cairo to monitor elections this month, pronounced himself "very pleased" — adding that he and the White House were plenty happy to see those Islamists coming to power.
"I don't have any problem with that, he said, "and the US government doesn't have any problem with that either."
Clearly, Carter wouldn't have a problem with the dismantling of Israel, either — but it does take a certain temerity to speak so forcefully on behalf of the Obama administration.
And there are places in the world — a lot of them, actually — where they just don't realize that former presidents are, first and foremost, private citizens.
They are taken seriously, in other words.
So what did the White House have to say about Carter's sweeping pronouncement?
Nothing. Not a peep — though a State Department spokeswoman did note, "We don't have anything to add, any response to that. He's a private citizen."
Carter is a serial violator of the Logan Act, which prohibits the private practice of diplomacy. In the past, he's hugged Hamas terrorists, and last month reportedly sent his condolences upon the death of North Korea's Kim Jong Il — wishing the dead dictator's son "every success" — presumably in the continued starvation and murder of his people.
Now, it's no secret that Carter remains extraordinarily bitter about losing the 1980 election. He's been playing Let's Pretend ever since.
But his presidency was a failure from beginning to end — and that had electoral consequences. A word to the wise.
