Lower the Debt Ceiling

"Lowering the debt ceiling would force federal-government budget cutting on a large scale, and this would free up resources (labor, land, and capital) and force a cutback in the federal government's regulatory apparatus. This would put Americans back to work producing consumer-valued goods."

Lower the Debt Ceiling

[An MP3 audio file of this article, narrated by the author, is available for download.]

Currently, the big show in Washington, DC, centers around raising the debt ceiling. Congress began setting this ceiling in 1917 so that the Treasury could independently issue debt. Download PDF The debt ceiling is like the limit on your credit card, except the federal government sets the limit on itself. When President Nixon took us off the gold standard in 1971, the national debt was $400 billion. The increase in the national debt last year alone was four times the entire debt in 1971.

Both Democrats and Republicans tell us that not raising the debt ceiling would have a negative -- even catastrophic -- effect on the American and world economies. They are in agreement on this. The only matter of debate is what concessions are necessary in order to establish a bipartisan majority to pass a bill raising the ceiling. Democrats seem to want larger cuts and tax increases, while Republicans want smaller cuts with no tax increases. The multitrillion-dollar cuts that they are discussing only occur over a ten-year time frame and do not balance the budget, so no one except Ron Paul is really discussing the kinds of budget cutting that would actually help the economy.

What we really need to do is to lower the debt ceiling. If Congress passed legislation that systematically reduced the debt ceiling over time, the economy could be rebuilt on a solid foundation. Entrepreneurs in the productive sectors would realize that an ever-increasing proportion of resources (land, labor, and capital) would be at their disposal, while companies that capitalized on the federal budget would have an ever-declining share of such resources.

Congress would have to cut the pay and benefits of its employees ( FDR cut them by 25 percent in the depths of the Great Depression) as well as the number of such employees. Real wage rates would decline, allowing entrepreneurs to hire more employees to produce consumer-valued goods.

Congress would have to cut back on its far-flung regulatory operations, which are in fact one of the biggest drags on the economy due to the burden and uncertainty that Obama and Congress have created in terms of healthcare, financial-market, and environmental regulations. A recent study by the Phoenix Center found that even a small reduction of 5 percent, or $2.8 billion, in the federal regulatory budget would result in about $75 billion in increased private-sector GDP each year and the addition of 1.2 million jobs annually. Download PDF Eliminating the job of even a single regulator grows the American economy by $6.2 million and creates nearly 100 private-sector jobs annually.

Under a reduced debt ceiling, the federal government would also have to sell off some of its resources. It has tens of thousands of buildings that are no longer in use and tens of thousands of buildings that are significantly underused about 75,000 buildings in total. It also controls over 400 million acres of land, or over 20 percent of all land outside of Alaska, which is almost wholly owned by the government. There is also the Strategic Petroleum Reserve and many other assets that could be sold off to cover short-term budget shortfalls.

Of course, reducing the debt ceiling would force the government to stop borrowing so much money from credit markets. This would leave significantly more credit available for the private sector. The shortage of capital is one of the most often cited reasons for the failure of the economy to recover.

Lowering the debt ceiling would force federal-government budget cutting on a large scale, and this would free up resources (labor, land, and capital) and force a cutback in the federal government's regulatory apparatus. This would put Americans back to work producing consumer-valued goods.

Passing an increase in the debt ceiling merely perpetuates the myth that there is any ceiling or control or limit on the government's ability to waste resources in the short run and its willingness to pass the burden of this squander onto future generations.

This sign was prominently displayed in front of a business in Florida and you are probably outraged at the thought of such an inflammatory sign.

And after all, it is only a sign, right?

As received..

*Did you know this about Libya?*

Some other facts (that mainstream media will never disclose) about Gaddafi and Libya

- Loans to Libyan citizens are given with NO interest.

- Students would get paid the average salary for the profession they are studying for.

- If you are unable to get employment the state would pay the full salary as if you were employed until you find employment.

- When you get married the couple gets an apartment or house for free from the Government.

- You could go to college anywhere in the world. The state pays 2,500 euros plus accommodation and car allowance.

- The cars are sold at factory cost.

- *Libya does not owe money, (not a cent) to anyone. No creditors.

- Free education and health care for all citizens.

- 25% of the population with a university degree.

- No beggars on the streets and nobody is homeless (until the recent bombing).

- Bread costs only $0.15 per loaf.

No wonder the US and other capitalist countries do not like Libya. Gaddafi would not consent to taking loans from IMF or World Bank at high interest rates. In other words Libya was INDEPENDENT! That is the real reason for the war in Libya! He may be a dictator, but that is not the US problem. Also Gaddafi called on all Oil producing countries NOT to accept payment for oil in USD or Euros. He recommended that oil get paid for in GOLD and that would have bankrupted just about every
Western Country as most of them do not have gold reserves to match the rate at which they print their useless currencies.

Remember the last time someone had the “NERVEâ€
to make a similar statement was when Saddam Hoosein advised all Opec countries not to accept payment for oil in US Dollars. Well, we all know what happened to him . Yes, they HUNG HIM.

I don't know about you, but I don't recall wanting higher taxes!  I think the polls that Obama is abusing here are polls which indicated that about 80 percent of Americans would support a higher tax on the rich.

This is what passes for democracy in Greece… and America

This is what passes for democracy in Greece… and America
by Simon Black
July 14, 2011
Thessaloniki, Greece

Last night I had quite an unexpected surprise.

You see, at my hotel here in Thessaloniki, there's a delegation from some group of the European Parliament called the Committee on Regional Development. They're here to help… Hey, isn't that what they always say? The Committee wants to supervise Greece working its way out of the debt crisis and make sure that Greece's poor are getting the support they need.

The hotel's restaurant was filled with these sycophantic parasites last night– an entire room full of people with a superiority complex who think that they are entitled to make decisions about other people's lives and money.

They sat at dinner drinking fine wine and polishing up steak tartare making proud, bombastic proclamations about the virtues of foreign aid, the democratic process, and the great progress of Greece's austerity measures.

Coincidentally, not 300 meters down the road, a campsite has been gathering for economic refugees, Thessaloniki's former middle class that has been vanquished by the crisis. Some of the children swung by the restaurant's outdoor terrace begging for change, only to be waved off by one of the delegate's extended pinkie fingers as he sipped his wine.

It couldn't have been more ironic… the perfect image of what passes for democracy today, right here in the country that invented it.

Today's democracy is nothing more that pseudo-authoritarian rule by an elite few, executed by legions of self-deluding freeloaders who have convinced themselves that their current bureaucratic roles are both necessary and honorable… as well as a stepping stone into the next job which will be even more necessary and honorable.

With each successive position up the bureaucratic ladder comes more power, more privilege… until they actually expect to be called "The Honorable…" so and so, or "His Excellency" so and so, etc.

My dictionary suggests a few definitions for 'honor'. One of them refers to a person's chastity… and I doubt it applies in this case given the political establishment's Twitter record. The other definition says, "conferred as a distinction, especially an official award for bravery or achievement."

In the United States, they must be confusing the term 'achievement' with 'destroying the economy and culture of the formerly most powerful nation on earth.'  President Obama is apparently so honorable that he can't even be bothered to hold negotiations anymore about debt compromise, arguing that Ronald Reagan wouldn't be doing that…

He seems more concerned about his esteem and rank being respected than facing the grim facts of economic reality.

Simultaneous on Capitol Hill, Comrade Bernanke sent the dollar plummeting once again. Just to put things in perspective, the entire eurozone is on the precipice of a meltdown, and the euro had been falling for days. The second this man opened his mouth, the dollar plunged… indicating that investors would rather take a chance on European insolvency than Bernanke.

It was truly pathetic… and yet another example of what passes for democracy today: One man who has never been elected is essentially given control of the money supply to do with it as he deems best in his sole discretion.

All in all, as usual, it's going to come down to the taxpayers. The bureaucrats will go on enjoying their steak tartare and ignoring the huddled masses. The politicians will go on posturing over title. The central bankers will keep making interest free loans to their friends and destroying their currencies.  We get stuck with the fallout.

In the end, the governments will make it a matter of national security and patriotism, ensuring that we 'do our duty to the nation' by coughing up more of our livelihood. I stumbled across this WW2 propaganda video a few days ago in which Daffy Duck tells us all that it's our patriotic duty to give as much as possible to the government.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqMVpcbhpqw&feature=player_embedded

Should we expect a new video soon suggesting that it's our patriotic duty to buy Treasury bonds…? In what passes for democracy today, you can bet on it.

Taxation Is Still Robbery

"There are so many reasons why the government should not raise taxes or otherwise collect more revenue -- even if only from "the rich" -- it's not funny. The first reason is moral. As one my predecessors at The Freeman, Frank Chodorov, used to say: "Taxation is robbery." Chodorov winds up his article this way: "There cannot be a good tax nor a just one; every tax rests its case on compulsion." It is sad that most self-styled lovers of humanity embrace a money-raising system grounded in the threat of physical force -- violence -- against people who themselves have not used force. Our moral progress in many areas cannot be doubted, nevertheless overall it has been uneven."

The Goal Is Freedom
Taxation Is Still Robbery
Eliminate the deficit by terminating government missions.
Sheldon Richman
Posted July 15, 2011

Whether President Obama and congressional Republicans can work out a deal to let the government to borrow even more (!) money seems to hang on whether the latter will go for increased in tax revenues.

Following the zigzagging negotiations isn't easy. First the aim was a short-term deal. Then both sides decided to go for a big package: $4 trillion in deficit reduction over ten years. That broke down when Obama said a quarter or a third of that amount should come from new revenues.

When I hear about ten-year budget deals, I first divide the aggregate number by ten so I see how little is at stake each year. I also want to know if the spending reduction is real or phony. Chris Edwards of the Cato Institute says most cuts are likely to be accounting tricks. We've seen this before -- with the budget deal just a few months ago.

I also remind myself that no Congress can bind a future Congress. Would you bet a substantial sum on a congressional promise to reduce the deficit over ten years? I didn't think so. Even if Obama is reelected, he wouldn't be in office for the last four years of the period.

Skepticism is justified. In the 1980s another deal was struck that supposedly would deliver $3 in spending cuts for every $1 in new revenue. Know what happened? That's right.

No Good Tax

There are so many reasons why the government should not raise taxes or otherwise collect more revenue -- even if only from "the rich" -- it's not funny. Our moral progress in many areas cannot be doubted, nevertheless overall it has been uneven.

The presumption against taxes holds even in a corporatist economy, where fortunes are made through the political, as opposed to the economic, means. The way to end illicit gains through government intervention is to abolish the privileges. It makes no sense to continue the privileges and then tax away some of the proceeds. That merely compounds the power of government by giving it more discretion.

This argument also holds if the new revenues are to come from ending tax deductions and credits rather than raising or imposing new taxes. A plain vanilla tax system is bad enough; one that gives rulers the power to reward and punish the economic activities of their choice is worse. Yet selectively ending exemptions while leaving others in place is not true reform. Obama and the other would-be revenue raisers pretend they want to clean up the tax code by getting rid of "loopholes" but we know that's not true. If they were serious, they'd be targeting all such exemptions not just those that make for populist-sound bites. What about all that special tax treatment for "green" technologies that Obama favors?

Spending versus Not Taxing

In recent days politicians and commentators have repeatedly said there is no difference between government's spending money and abstaining from taxing some forms of income. But that could be true only if the government owned all income. Leaving money in someone's pocket -- even if it is done arbitrarily -- is not a form of spending, however manipulative it is. But it serves the rulers' interest to claim otherwise because it lets them say that to end an exemption is to cut spending.

Among other reasons for saying no to new taxes is that even if you think the government should have new revenues to deal with the debt, the politicians can't be trusted to use it that way. They are much more likely to find new ways to spend the money. It's happened many times before because that's the nature of the system. Politicians, like real people, respond to incentives.

Here's another reason: There aren't enough rich people to make a big difference.

Obama has often expressed his wish to raises taxes on couples making more than $250,000. But as Keith D. Williamson of National Review points out, there's not enough money in that group to fix the budget.

The 2012 deficit is forecast to hit $1.1 trillion under Obama's budget. (Thanks, Mr. President!) Spread that deficit over all the households in Club 250K and you have to jack up their taxes by an average of $500,000. Which you simply can't do, since a lot of them don't have $500,000 in income to seize: Most of them are making $250,000 to $450,000 and paying about half in taxes already.

Club 1

Okay, how about those making a million a year or more? That won't work either.

Only 0.2 percent of U.S. households have incomes that high, meaning that there's only about 200,000 of them. And like Club 250K, Club 1 is bottom-heavy: There are a lot more $1 million men than there are $6 million men. And there are a whole heck of a lot more $6 million men than there are $60 million men.
You want to tax Club 1 to get rid of the deficit, you have to hit each of those 200,000 households with an average tax hike -- not an average tax bill, but tax increase -- of $6 million. And a lot of those Club 1 households don't have $6 million in income to start with, much less $6 million left after the taxes they're already paying.

Let's face it, as Walter Williams notes, with government spending about $10 billion a day, even confiscating the incomes and wealth of the rich and the profits of the Fortune 500 just wouldn't get very far. It assumes, contrary to experience, that the rich will be stationary targets rather than find ways to shelter income, even moving it offshore. In the postwar period, federal revenues have remained remarkably steady as a percentage of GDP regardless of tax rates.

There's an unsettling message buried in all this. A big-spending government will have to stick it to the middle class. That's where the money is. But it won't fix the deficit. According to Williamson:

The Bush "tax cuts for the rich" cost the Treasury about $800 billion in forgone revenue; the Bush tax cuts for the middle class cost trillions -- 2.2 of them, to be precise.
Repealing all of those Bush tax cuts, for rich and middle class alike, gets you about $3 trillion -- over ten years. The deficit is running from a third to almost half that every year.

So the only way back away from the brink is to cut spending -- by eliminating missions wholesale. But politicians don't really want to cut spending. Hence, the problem.

Hmmm, why is Bernie Saunders gathering up democrats and threatening
filibuster and reelection support if POTUS fucks with SS?

This has got to be some of the most stupidest shit I have ever read,  but I note that it comes from Moe,  via the Daily Kos.....Pretty much explains everything.

Re: Musharraf (Bush Jr.'s buddy in Pakistan) calls US aid suspension ‘disastrous’

Geez Studio,  you become more and more clueless each and every week.

WASHINGTON - Former president Pervez Musharraf has warned of dire

Rice University in Houston, Texas, on Monday evening, according to
media reports. "It is not in the best interest of Pakistan but also
not in the best interest of the United States. If Pakistan is weakened
how do we fight terrorism?"

Strange there is no mention in this article of the President who
stopped sending money to Pakistan...
uh, that would be President Obama for those stupid enough to not know
any better.

Who's terrorism? Pakistan's or the U.S.'s?

The only thing Pakistan did was build atom bombs with the billion$$$
given them by Bush Jr. to point at India.
Pakistan could give a rats ass about fighting terrorism for the U.S.

Only Republitards believe Pakistan didn't know Bin Laden was 1 mile
from their main military base.
Only Republitards believe Pakistan is an ally.
Only Republitards would continue giving billion$$$ to Pakistan and
gloss over Pakistan throwing out U.S. military trainers, arresting
those that blew the whistle of the location of Bin Laden, and
indirectly paying for Pakistan's nuclear weapons programs.

Folks, they don't call them the stupid party for nothing.
They look for stupid to vote for stupid.
